Hello all and Happy New Year!

A warm welcome to the January Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

Every day the thread leader (me this month) posts links and missions from the Flylady site and also some friendly (!) personal comments. This is quite a ‘talky’ thread but we try our hardest not to be cliquey and new members are very welcome! Typically there are a lot of new members in January so I will do my best to keep track of everybody Smile.

Old members, as you know there have been a few issues with links at times so if there is some chopping and changing over the month with the links then that is why. Please note that Flylady is (understandably) keen for people to click on her site so please do have a look around the site and the links.

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

I’m sure lots of you have New Years Resolutions to be organised and to declutter, as I do every year Grin. Be kind to yourselves and careful not to crash and burn!

I am risking making two:-
Go to bed at 11pm unless decent reason why not.
Spend less time on my phone.

Here are the links for Monday 1st Jan. although I am linking these then if you are treating today as a holiday (as much as is possible in real life anyway!) then feel free to take today off.

*
Here is the daily summary for Monday (also available on the Flylady website at flight plan which should update automatically each day).

I’m afraid I start the year confused Blush. I’ve just looked on the Flylady website and the link to the zone and missions is here which indicates we will be in zone 5 which is the living room. I would have thought the month starts in zone 1 but I know this has happened before, I think SC explained? TBH after Xmas I think most living rooms could use a bit of work so it won’t hurt Smile. Apologies if this is confusing.

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

Spend 15 mins decluttering, or whatever you can manage, in Zone 5.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 5 is here.

daily focus

missions for the week

Flykids mission

January’s habit is shining your sink.

beginner babysteps.

Happy flying everyone.

Updated ta da list:

  • brought in baby toys from garage
  • found charity box in garage and added to it
  • took down Christmas cards and recycled (didn’t manage tree or decs today!)
  • lots of folding and putting away of laundry (I had three clean loads hanging around!)

My Zone 1 is actually pretty clear, bar the understairs cupboard in the hallway, so that will be my hot spot for tomorrow’s mission. It’s become somewhere we (DH) throw things that don’t have logical homes, so who knows what I might unearth!

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 01/01/2018 20:03

Sorry abit, I think I missed you. Welcome Grin.

January’s thread is notoriously busy so apologies in advance if I do miss posts or people. Thankfully we are a lovely bunch on here and other posters normally get in with welcomes or answering questions even if the thread leader does not Grin.

Hallooooo - I'm still lurking here but v little time to post. Happy New Year everyone and thanks to Hills for December and Stressy for January.

Just to show I have been reading I have to tell you my hall is totally empty! Not as clever as it sounds as it is approx. 80cm x 80cm. It has no walls as where the four walls would be is taken by the front door, the dining room door, the lounge door and the stairs. Not v feng shui but how this Victorian house was built.

I have post-Christmas burnout on ideas for food. We have eaten all the leftovers and I have run out of any enthusiasm for cooking I may have had. I need to pack my bags and go visit sc or zoo who keep producing mouth-watering food for their families.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 01/01/2018 20:33

Hello Honu Smile. Glad you are still around!

Has anyone else got the flylady app? I love ticking things off on it Smile Need to see if I can get it to automatically reset though as that's annoying...

I've done most things on there today, but do need to spend some time personalising it to what I need to do in each room Smile I did used to have the home routines app, not sure why I ditched it really as it was really good and I think it was what flylady recommended before launching her own.

Stilllivinginazoo · 01/01/2018 20:58

In RL i am known for my "feeder" habits- I love to cook for those around meSmile

I am told the cherry jelly was very nice.i didn't measure the water and as a result slightly soft set but that suited dd2 down to the ground so win win

Wash ups done n put away
Table wiped

Seems such a small thing but getting up to a kitchen ready to go and not having to FIND the dining table surface makes such a massive difference to my starts to the day

CotswoldStrife · 01/01/2018 21:59

Evening all, welcome newbies - lovely to have you with us.

DD has been cooking more over the last couple of days - this has rather increased the washload for stuff but I'm trying to think of the long term benefits. At least she is old enough now to be left to get on with it all (eg weighing ingredients) while I try and keep up with the dishwashing it all creates!

I'm also doing an organising/decluttering project on another website (a bowl full of lemons) which looks really interesting. It hasn't started yet but the details are available. I need all the motivation I can get!

Afreshnewyearplease · 02/01/2018 06:46

Brew morning all

Last day of the school holidays here! Will be doing a practice run of everyone up dressed fed by 830. Also need to check pe kits and homework

Cagliostro · 02/01/2018 08:22

Great list!

Welcome newbies and nice to see you honu :)

I don’t use an app as I found I just procrastinated more. Blush I’m trying to just gradually build up habits myself.

On that note, I must confess I barely follow flylady at all at the moment. I’m just here for the chat, support and naughty/haughty corner treats! Blush But I do want to improve, so my aim for this month is to always post a ta da list. That should keep my motivation up and prove that I’m doing something.

ta da (for yesterday)
✅got Caglets to put their washing away and put washing up away
✅started adding bills and income dates to the new diary
✅put some loose DVDs away
✅sent some messages I’d been procrastinating over
✅two loads of laundry
✅threw a few random things away that had been lurking for no good reason

I am tired and grumpy this morning, if I don’t get back to sleep quickly after the early feed (5am today) I just go past the point of being able to. Today is going to be hard work. I may disappear into town with the baby before DH has to work as I really need a change of scene and some space.

Afreshnewyearplease · 02/01/2018 08:24

Ta da

Washer on
Dryer on
All dc up fed and dressed

Had one dispute with dc1 already. He is very over emotional and has been for some time. Is this a thing with 9/10 year old boys?

Stilllivinginazoo · 02/01/2018 08:26

Yep afresh it then went to angry outbursts with D's here

Afreshnewyearplease · 02/01/2018 08:28

Oh great. Ds1 doesnt seem the sort for angrt outbursts tbh but we will see. Ds2 (8) went through a phase of kicking walls when angry, however he did not appreciate my laughing and stopped this.

Afreshnewyearplease · 02/01/2018 08:38

Has anyone got an outdoor welly stand they can recommend? Dont want to spend £££

MercuryRising · 02/01/2018 08:44

Afresh DS1 was emotional from about 9 onwards. He is 11 now and is more prone to stroppiness.

I was up early in preparation for returning to work tomorrow.

Ta da
Washing up
Small pile of ironing
Washload on

Waves to Honu

Callmecordelia · 02/01/2018 08:54

Haven't been posting much due to flying break over Christmas, but I am looking forward to getting back into it. I'm going to post to do list for motivation. Intend to get these done by end of the week.

Ring docs for two routine medical appointments
Find new direct debit details for pensions
Brush and turn cushions on sofa
Sort date for DD's birthday party, guest list and invitations
Sort PE kit
Clean bathrooms
Vacuum
Dust
Wash kitchen floor
Change beds

And the biggie, take all decorations down and store them.

Wish DH was here so I could get on. We only discovered yesterday that he made a mistake on the calendar so when I thought he was having a day off today, he wasn't. He was also not going to take his usual lieu day on Thursday because he'd had yesterday off and didn't want to be greedy. I was a bit Hmm.

Callmecordelia · 02/01/2018 09:03

Afresh - this sort of thing?

Using a shoe mat protects your floor from dirt and gravel.

Makes cleaning under shoe racks and in storage cabinets easier, just take it out and wipe it off.

The high edge makes sure that dirt and water stay on the mat.

Oh blimey, didn't mean to post the blurb. Blush

foxessocks · 02/01/2018 09:08

morning all! No sickness overnight and we actually all had a decent sleep. Still feel a little on edge but trying to get on with things as normal, back to usual routine today as dh gone back to work. Don't have any plans really as I didn't want to make any in case we got sick. Think to be on the safe side we'll have a quiet day at home although we do need some bread and something for dinner and to post my mum's birthday card now we won't see her.

To do
Daily routine
Hot spots in zone one
Declutter in porch, dining area
Finish from yesterday - hoover porch, mop kitchen and dust dining room table.
pop to shops
post birthday card
Tuesday planning for rest of week

Afreshnewyearplease · 02/01/2018 09:11

Welly stand - i was looking at either the wall mounted ones or floor ones with like lots of sticks?

Bad description

Found some cheap ones on ebay so going to try one of these i think

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 02/01/2018 09:15

Morning all. I love that welly mat Callme. Ikea quite a drive from us and their delivery charge is so high that we rarely get small things from there but it will definitely go on a mental wishlist.

Whispers, I have the home routines app and find it pretty good, when I actually use it!

Ta da:-
Morning routine
DD1 at an activity all day
DH has stated taking the Xmas decs down. DD2 is ‘helping’.

To do:-
Make coffee
Reset laundry
Help with Xmas decs

Hopefully this afternoon:-
Shoe shopping with DD2 although not a good time as loads of sale stock in various random sizes but not a lot reliably in stock iyswim.
Pick up craft bits for DD1 to make a poster for her holiday homework. I HATE holiday homework, especially over Christmas.

Tonight:-
Apparently I have sewed a Brownie badge on wrong Sad so need to unpick and resew. Of course it was the trickiest badge of all to sew on Angry. May get DH to do this if I do bedtime.

Big wing flaps to all Smile.

Morning all.

Goodness you have been busy. Whereas I have been lazy. Going back to work tomorrow and while I felt fine yesterday( no repercussions re too much wine 3 med.glasses my limit) I have woken up with a really bad stomach this morning.
Did a few Ta Das yesterday
I still have a clear table in kitchen😃 I actually had brunch there pancakes, maple syrup and bacon.yum.
Load of logs, managed this.
Cooked and washed up roast beef( tiny bit, what a price)
Shined the sink twice!

Plan for today

Hall, front door, stairs ahead, sitting room door to left. Coat hooks to right 4 and not enough for two of us. We had a second lower one in kitchen by back door which now has shopping bags hung on it and two with gloves and a hat. This is very messy today as school bags and washing rack in front of door. Fireman would tell me off, rightly so. Going to tackle this area first.

Need to complete paperwork for two groups ready to pass on tomorrow. Need to plan lesson, oh, just realised they changed my teaching day so don't need that till next week. Need to plan Nurture groups work for this week. Get bags ready for different days.

Kitchen worktop Bleugh.DD has added packets to next to jar system and moved jars around. Last year I decided to put in breakfast contents so quick and easy in the mornings. I can recommend this. I have porridge oats, Special K, granola, bran in jars so I can have one or mix and match. The bread bin and toaster are up and right on top of microwave.
Need to put some mouse pellets down under sink. I hate doing this but the little bastards get in and chew anything ( foil😳 ) an breed. Somewhere in the stonework there must be an entrance but can we find it. No!
Post birthday card to nephew. Find cheque book and surprise him with a little extra. He is in last year of Uni unless he decides to go for a Masters. Very clever boy.
Vacuum stairs and hall.need to ask friend if I can borrow Dyson cordless for trial run before I buy one. DD is going to ask previous flat mate if he can get me a discounted one. He works for them😃 I did cook him a fab dinner once and we treated them to pizza too. Hopeful. I have offered to trial the new one.
If I get this lot done by 2 pm I'm going to have 1 hr knitting. Yes, I got started yesterday. Very slow but hope to finish by next week.

Hope all the poorly families recover soon. It sounds awful. What a shame.
Cags I resorted to a big basket for shoes and everyone chucked them in. That way you would only have to pull the basket out of the way of under stairs cupboard. I used to have to keep pram in front of the door too. You had to pull it back in and stand on stairs while someone squeezed past to shut door or ran around house, out the gate and shut it from front. Only a prams width and a few inches either side. It was a coach built one. How I loved that pram it did all four plus sisters three but she ruined it and it is in shed because I hope someone could restore it. Hoarder!
Happy flying report back later.

Bowerbird5 · 02/01/2018 11:24

Ooh sorry that was long. Should preview first.

Stilllivinginazoo · 02/01/2018 12:03

afresh I'd never have put D's down for angry as got older.he used to be such a gentle placid boy.he still is til gets a bee in his bonnet them boom.everyobe stand back n hope he rages off up to his room...

I've been food shopping today.my back is terrible.i may have to have a lay down as it kept me up half the night n in lots pain again nowSad

Subtleconstraints · 02/01/2018 12:14

Hi all! Our trip has been delayed by a day owing to (a) dh's work and (b) having to call in emergency tree surgeons post storm (rotten oak threatening newly renovated bit of roof). Not much Flying achieved.

Flowers Longtime sorry this time of year is so difficult and Sad for you and your family

Bowerbird could poorly tum be stress at anticipated return to work by any chance? My stomach always reacts to stress in this way. Reaction to different foods over Christmas seems totally arbitrary so I've come to the conclusion it's stress related. Sympathies anyway as it is v debilitating Flowers

Cotswold thanks for A Bowl of Lemons ref: looks interesting!

Great lists Afresh Can and Hetty! And well done to everyone else who has been beavering away!

Glad you are all staying clear of bug Foxes!

Hope you are feeling a bit better Who knows

Good luck with your list Cordelia!

Waves to Honu and everyone else, including newcomers!

Ta for links Toostressy. Flylady really is dreadful about synchronising site with date!! Do you think she may have got bored of it or something and is off enjoy the spoils from thousands of purple mop sales or something? It doesn't seem to be updated properly at all ... .

Off to drive dd to riding now. She will be jumping small logs and small X country obstacles this afternoon. She has good balance and seat so should be ok but I always find myself chewing my knuckles waiting in car, so hopefully I'll be given a few stable chores instead by kindly neighbour to take my mind off things... .
