Hello all and Happy New Year!

A warm welcome to the January Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

Every day the thread leader (me this month) posts links and missions from the Flylady site and also some friendly (!) personal comments. This is quite a ‘talky’ thread but we try our hardest not to be cliquey and new members are very welcome! Typically there are a lot of new members in January so I will do my best to keep track of everybody Smile.

Old members, as you know there have been a few issues with links at times so if there is some chopping and changing over the month with the links then that is why. Please note that Flylady is (understandably) keen for people to click on her site so please do have a look around the site and the links.

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

I’m sure lots of you have New Years Resolutions to be organised and to declutter, as I do every year Grin. Be kind to yourselves and careful not to crash and burn!

I am risking making two:-
Go to bed at 11pm unless decent reason why not.
Spend less time on my phone.

Here are the links for Monday 1st Jan. although I am linking these then if you are treating today as a holiday (as much as is possible in real life anyway!) then feel free to take today off.

*
Here is the daily summary for Monday (also available on the Flylady website at flight plan which should update automatically each day).

I’m afraid I start the year confused Blush. I’ve just looked on the Flylady website and the link to the zone and missions is here which indicates we will be in zone 5 which is the living room. I would have thought the month starts in zone 1 but I know this has happened before, I think SC explained? TBH after Xmas I think most living rooms could use a bit of work so it won’t hurt Smile. Apologies if this is confusing.

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

Spend 15 mins decluttering, or whatever you can manage, in Zone 5.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 5 is here.

Happy flying everyone.

Happy new year! I'm new to this thread although I have followed (and dropped) Flylady before.
My house is in a sort of proto-hoarder-house stage. I have lots of cupboards filled with crap and lots of things that no longer fit in cupboards cluttering up every room.

In the living room there are loads of raffia "storage" boxes that are storing nothing but junk. Helpfully one box takes about 15 minutes to work through so that's my focus this week.
I've done 2 so far and they have each yielded one plastic bag of books for the charity shop, one plastic bag of paper stuff for the bin and a couple of books worth keeping.
I have a satisfying clear space on my floor where the horrible boxes used to be

foxessocks · 01/01/2018 07:56

Happy New year everyone! Not the best start to the new year as we are staying with my parents and my mum has been being sick in the night (not alcohol related as far as I know since we only had a couple of glasses!). So she is in bed and I think we are all wondering who is next! Really hoping nobody else comes down with it. What a start to the year my poor mum!

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 01/01/2018 07:59

Oh dear foxes socks. I hope she is ok

juneybean · 01/01/2018 08:15

💥Happy New Year💥

💤 just coming around. Had a really good nights sleep. Didn't get in from our pub until after 1 am. We all had such a good night. Lovely meal then chat with friends. I knew more than half the people in the pub. Some local ,some from choir and some from church.
The meal was lovely. Wine flowed and amazingly so far( fingers crossed) I don't have so much as a headache. Two lots of singers on and later on a few up dancing. Well behaved kids around 10- 14 in and got up for a little bop and the adults joined in making shapes with them. Lovely atmosphere. Never heard so much as a cross word from any one. Then up to make a chain for Auld Lang ... To see the new year in. Apparently live streaming too. Great night out.
No Ta Das yet as still in bed🙀

Plan for today
Fold and put away washing.
Go for a walk
Sweep up the path outside as it is full of leaves and chicken crap.

That will do for today. I have some craft projects to do and a small dinner to make. Shine my sink( did that yesterday)
Hope you have a good day. Some amazing work done already.
And thank you for old thread and new thread.💌

HettyB · 01/01/2018 09:13

Ooh, can I join please? I’ve looked at the flylady website about a million times over the past five years or so, and never got beyond about day three...perhaps 2018 will be the year I succeed.

Bit of background: household is me, DH plus two tinies (DD 2 years and DS 12 weeks). On mat leave so theoretically loads of time for cleaning but in practice very little. Just moved house so not too much decluttering to do (did a purge before we moved) but still a few bits to go. Main challenge for me is sorting out the areas we still haven’t packed/things we don’t have a home for (DS is currently in with us and his bedroom-to-be has become a dumping ground) and getting into a proper daily/weekly cleaning schedule.

Ta Das so far today: none

To do:

  • get on top of laundry mountain (had guests to stay who left yesterday so extra sheets/towels etc)
  • change our bed and DD’s cotbed
  • locate charity bag in garage and add accumulated piles to it
  • take down Christmas decs and cards and put away/recycle
  • locate bag of baby toys in garage and find a home for them in house (DS now starting to take an interest in doing more than just staring at the ceiling/people’s faces)
  • deal with pile of paperwork that has accumulated on the kitchen side.

And shine my sinks, of course Smile

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 01/01/2018 09:25

Welcome hetty and unlimited Smile. I find this thread together with the website much more successful for me rather than just the website. Hetty, with a twelve week old and a 2 year old anything at all achieved is a bonus! My DDs are 4 (nearly 5 Shock) and 7 but I remember those toddler and newborn days so well. unlimited, one of the things i’ve picked up from decluttering research (time that should have been spent decluttering Grin) is that if your storage is full you actually need to start with that - the stuff you have out is likely to be what you use but you can’t put it away as the storage is full of stuff you don’t use. So it sounds as if your plan to start going through those storage boxes is fab.

Fingers crossed just a one-off for you mum foxes. Glad you had a good night Bower.

Not me with the no washing, think it is zoo. I can’t bring myself to start new year behind on laundry so ours is on i’m afriad.

Mmmmmm, I would love a bacon butty. In typical disorganised fashion we have started the new year running late Grin. Kids and DH have had breakfast but I have only had a few bites and then left cereal bar on worktop so am about to run 5k on very little food Hmm. Great start here. Catch you all later.

Place marking ☺☺

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 01/01/2018 10:10

Thanks stressy Smile
And yes, that's how it is in my house. Useful stuff cluttering every surface. Total crap in storage. It will feel great to actually store the things I use one day Grin

Stilllivinginazoo · 01/01/2018 10:21

afresh I did 6 fricking loads yesterday so it's all caught up and washer gets its only day orfGrin
Also trying for less about/sweaty.in theory east in practise...we shall see

I went back to bed and am starting again...
In plus side I've walked into relatively tidy front room and kitchen is clean (as it gets)with surfaces and shiny sink

Hetty we love new babies here.please be kind to yourself and pace carefully

Bower sounds perfect evening

Foxes hope your mum's better and it wasn't anything lurgy related

Stilllivinginazoo · 01/01/2018 10:24

Less angry/sweary
People what can I say.it looks ok in preview then poof I press send and it turns into a zoo howler(newbies.these are frequent.brace yourself)GrinBlush

Afreshnewyearplease · 01/01/2018 10:40

See i didnt even notice you put sweaty. I must have got used to translating you zoo

If someone in my house doesnt stop pissing ALL over the toilet seat i am going to beat them round the head with it

Bowerbird5 · 01/01/2018 10:42

Mm you do the run and I'll have the bacon butty. Ready for it now.

Welcome newbies. I think the difference is the support on here whether you achieve or not.

I just need a bigger house. I need to keep de cluttering. My friends solution is to buy another shed. I'm thinking a summer house might be a solution. The one I want is too expensive as I want a new kitchen. So thinking new, cheaper summerhouse. Put excess cups in it, painting easel etc

WhispersOfWickedness · 01/01/2018 10:44

Hello, can I join?
I followed flylady a few years ago and ended up falling off the wagon, so I'm back with renewed vigour Smile
Also trying Kon Mari, back to bullet journaling and starting a new business this month, no point doing things by halves Grin
I am up, showered, dressed (for the sake of my carpets, i can't get on board with shoes in the house though), stuck a load of washing on (not superstitious, I didn't wash on NYD last year and had a rubbish year...) had a lovely bacon and egg sandwich (healthy eating clearly not one of my resolutions Grin), need to do the dishwasher before we leave for my in laws for the day Smile

Stilllivinginazoo · 01/01/2018 10:58

Welcome whispers

Afresh trade toilet seat pee for behind the fucking toilet(on bits of screwed up tissue to aim atAngry) bloody boys...as I only have one I can easily deduct the culprit tho.doubt my girls could be arsed all that acrobatics to piss me off
(We could do a ritual seat round the head bashing when you find your culpritGrin)
DS tends do this when he's upset about something but it still drives me to the edge of meltdown rage

I'm afraid you may have spent too much time around me ...it isn't unknown to spread like a disease and others start talking my brand of juibberish sleepdepeived kind mostly I am known for my spoonerism howlersBlush

Bowerbird5 · 01/01/2018 11:09

I didn't notice either.

It is strange but it never happens when I am here on my own only when DH returns but it is never him. Oh no,of course not he wouldn 't do such a thing.little boys I can excuse but not big, lazy, less sighted old liars!

Afreshnewyearplease · 01/01/2018 11:22

The culprit confessed. Threatened tech ban. Usually does the trick.

I dont excuse it, hes nearly 10 and becoming slobby

Stilllivinginazoo · 01/01/2018 11:25

I've removed the Xbox controller...at 12 (birthday on 18dec) he is now responsible clearing it up.hoping this effective deterant.plus I fed up try squeeze to reach as our lav in it's own separatepoxy space to main room for bath n sink(made potty training fun having remind wash hands.idiot design)

Afreshnewyearplease · 01/01/2018 11:27

I expect my 8&9 year olds to clean up their own piss zoo

Dd now writing her christmas list for next year ....

abitofado · 01/01/2018 11:47

Oh, can I join? I have been a follower of Flylady since the early 2000s but I've never stuck with it and my house is a mess. It is impacting on my peace of mind so I really need to get a handle on this! I may end up in the naughty corners more often than not, nut will supply gin and chocolates on a regular basis Grin
