Who's up for a summer holiday house sort out?

Snap8TheCat · 20/07/2017 13:34

As usual my house needs a good declutter and clean Grin

I am a childminder by day and so will be out and about a fair bit but can also fit in some house chores whilst they are nicely amused and encourage them to help me with things like sorting the playrooms out.

The summer holidays and starting the new school year off with a fresh start seems like a good idea.

Would anyone like to join me?

Yesterday I needed to replace a curtain rail that got broken. And I have been doing normal housework. Only little bits of decluttering getting done. I think I might do a list/plan so I can push myself more.

Notinyournelly · 30/07/2017 14:51

Any ideas for kitchen storage I have a small kitchen so a little more clever ideas would be great.

Also I've really want a family command centre has anyone here got one. I've only got a narrow hallway so that's not very helpful.

Snap8TheCat · 31/07/2017 16:41

I also have a small kitchen and a non existent hallway! The only solution I found was to use the under stairs cupboard which leads off of the kitchen as a pantry type storage. I bought some wooden shelving and Kilner jars and all my baking and dry foods are stored in there. I'm also lucky enough to have a walk in utility (not big enough to call a room but houses my washing machine, tumble dryer, cleaning stuff, some drawers and a broom and mop hook etc.

My biggest tip is just to have less stuff I'm afraid!

My paperwork sorting and filing is complete. It was mammoth and I'm so proud it's done!

I have too much stuff. Ive had a clearout sold bags and bags of clothing that belonged to myself and DDs. Still too many clothes. Presently Im trying to do that thing of every time I leave living room, take something with me and put it in its correct place. I need to drum that into DDs too. I love vintage clothing and have kept stuff from 80s that I still wear occasionally - so the thing of 'if you havent worn for 6 months throw it away' doesn't work for me as I might wear in say 8 months time. Im very specific about clothes/shoes and like "different". At present laundry is my bugbear. Particularly clean washing that teeters off top of dryer as I have no storage - apart from airing cupboard, no cupboards in this house. I have a spare room thats a tiny boxroom. I would like some lovely, pretty laundry baskets for permanent clothes storage in there. A good size. Havent seen anythingSad. My other bugbear is cluttered kitchen table. Anyway - placemarking for ideas/tips

Exhausted and having a flare up at the moment so am fit for nothing other than getting the DCs to put their clothes away from our trip to mum's.

Been reading old threads about home organisation and have decided to get a cheap concertina folder. Not instigating any new complicated system yet, just going to put any important letters like bills/tax credits etc straight in there. Otherwise they get put down somewhere and we always have a panic looking for them when we need them.

MamOfTwo · 31/07/2017 17:32

The thing I struggle with is children's 'paperwork' - artwork, birthday cards, little notes they write, school awards etc. How do people deal with those? I can't bring myself to chuck any of it but we are now DROWNING in it! We don't have a scanner as have seen that suggested as one option. Any ideas?

Notinyournelly · 31/07/2017 18:54

I bought a few presentation folders and the see through sleeves, i throw loads away. We were getting dozens every day. I just kept really nice ones. Hopefully it will calm down September.

I did post at the beginning but came down with shingles, just starting to feel better, off to read the thread now.

Today's challenge

www.apartmenttherapy.com/january-cure-2017-assignment-6-240081

It only takes ten minutes

Sorry for lateness . We had a roof leak this am . Awoke to shouting to come downstairs .... to find our kitchen ceiling was hanging down

Well .... looks like I will Eventually have a nice kitchen cause need a whole new ceiling and will finally do the walls and a few other jobs too

Onwards and upwards

I was feeling a bit dejected about posting on here but gonna keep going in the hope that there's a few followers

And it's helping me stay on track

Will try to flag up if there's any particularly good tips

So far loving the outbox

spiderbabymum · 31/07/2017 20:55

And. Ring part of this group is encouraging

Notinyournelly · 31/07/2017 21:56

Two things I can't let go of in my kitchen, a bread maker. And a stupid pie maker.
Don't use either of the bloody things but what if I do suddenly turn into the domestic goddess I've always thought is hidden away inside me 🤔

grumpypug · 01/08/2017 08:17

Hi - is it too late to join?

We need a massive sort out and I need something to keep me on track. I like a good list but would get a bit overfaced by everything so will try and stick to a daily list. Today I will:

Sort Kitchen drawers
Sort TV drawer
Clean toilet window (recently had some work done)
Bathrooms

I'm going to get up and get on whilst everyone is still sleeping....

Cagliostro · 01/08/2017 09:41

Never too late grumpy we all have to start somewhere :)

Got health visitors (specialists for older kids with SN - our DCs were recently diagnosed with ASD) coming next week living room is a mess. As is everywhere else TBH.

Imamiddleclasstwat · 01/08/2017 09:55

Please can I join? I have some time off over the holidays and really want to get my house 'show home' decluttered.
So far I've cleared out all the drawers in the living room, the worst kitchen cupboards, the utility room, my clothes (although perhaps need another go) half of dds room and half of the office.
I want to do the playroom, medicine cupboard (5 years of severe illness for ds have left us with ridiculous amounts of meds and equipment, most of which is not needed and put of date now) , the airing cupboard and the garden.
Ideally I want to decorate too!!!

For tiday

MsAwesomeDragon · 01/08/2017 19:48

Well I've been a bit crap the past few days. I fully intended to decorate the bathroom while dd2 was away at the weekend, but I didn't. No excuse really, I just couldn't be bothered so I didn't. I didn't really have as much time as I thought I would as it was just 2 nights and 1 full day (2 half days as well).

I have, today, finished the hallway. We have a new larger shoe rack to go with the shelves for bags. The cupboard under the stairs is now also empty, ready for me to decide what we'll store there.

Major spanner in my plans now as she will be working from home for the next few weeks, which is the time I've allocated to decluttering. We don't have a home office, his computer is in the living room, so I'll have to keep dd2 out of there, which means lots of days out rather than lazy days with her toys I'm living room. Grrrrrr!

MsAwesomeDragon · 01/08/2017 19:49

That's dh working from home, not she.

wobblywonderwoman · 01/08/2017 20:16

mamoftwo if you don't have a scanner, photograph the art work and notes. Works just as well.

Snapcat.. Your list is slowly but surely getting there. I haven't done much since. But did some baking today and while I mastered a recipe I took all my tins out, hoovered the draw, got off sticky bits and used litter trays from poundland (don't laugh but they fit perfectly in the drawer) to store flour etc. Now I have a perfect baking drawer and I am going to trial run Christmas cake this weekend (I never get time nearer Christmas to actually make one though I make my own mincemeat)

wobblywonderwoman · 01/08/2017 20:17

Drawer

grumpypug · 01/08/2017 21:33

Good morning

www.apartmenttherapy.com/january-cure-2017-assignment-8-240079

notinyournelly · 02/08/2017 09:49

It's going to rain today so I'm going to try and get back on track.
I'm going to clean kitchen and living room. Normal mess.
I plan to clean the wardrobes and clothes drawers and sort out everyone's clothes. Get the kids to tidy a bit of their rooms. And if I get all that done I'll be very surprised.
Hope everyone is doing well.
I'm going to look at the sealed jars like someone suggested.
Does anyone do anything with cereal. Those boxes take a lot of space especially if half empty.
I'm thinking a big plastic box for all of them, peg the inner bags and throw away the cardboard.
Any better ideas?

itshappenedagain · 02/08/2017 10:14

Morning rain here too. I'm going to sort one of the children's bedrooms...hopefully the two of them but it may take a day to do each.
I think we need to go out for a few hours too otherwise I get a bit of cabin fever!
Notonyournelly i use the plastic cereal containers, as we have 4 or 5 on the go at one time. Easy to see how much of each is left and easy to wipe over. Plus it stops anything getting into them without you noticing.

IWantACheeseburger · 02/08/2017 10:32

Can I join you all?
We are moving house in six weeks so really need a good clear out before packing.
I'm a SAHM to a 4+1 year old so it's hard trying to stuff with them around.

We have been doing some DIY this week and sanded the dining table in the kitchen (flat, no garden!) So now everything is covered in dust! So today's job is to clear all the crap off the worktops and clean everything then sort all the crap that came off.
Happy tidying everyone!
