We've had a new mattress, so decided to clear everything off our ottoman. Our bed & Ottoman very rarely looks this tidy. Does this look dated?

Thanks, I like the neutral wardrobes etc it makes injecting colour when I want to, into bedding easier. I have taken the red rug away, and it looks ok but too bare. I have found a picture from another part of the house to put above the dressing table, and have added artificial flowers in the room. Will look at a different colour & larger ottoman, and lamps. We don't tend to read much in the bedroom, sometimes my Kindle, but it has a backlight.

fair enough! I’ve inherited quite a bit of old furniture, so it would have been quite unfortunate if I didn’t like it. (Or maybe it just what I’m used to. Who knows 🤷‍♀️)

What I would do:

I personally wouldn’t do a rug on carpet, it just seems unnecessary.

I would remove or (seeing as according to you impossible) cover the stickers on the wall.

I would get a larger ottoman or (if impossible) buy a throw I happen to really like. (But that may just be my personal dislike of the red shining through… which you like! So you probably shouldn’t cover up the ottoman)😅

I would prefer some lamps with natural materials.

What else? Fake flowers aren’t my cup of tea. I would probably get an easy indoor plant instead. Whatever shade and shape happens to suit you. It’s also beneficial to the room climate…

we don’t have a tv in our bedroom. But I personally find the glass and metal of the TV stand quite industrial and „cold“, so I’d probably focus on swapping that one out instead of the ottoman. (Edit: the tv stand and the wall stickers would be my primary focus, tbh.)

I‘m also fond of large paintings or wallrugs. So I’d get either of those (but definitely not both).

but those are recommendations influenced by my preferences.

Somebody‘s clean and calm might feel industrial and cold to the next person…

They were everywhere. Also popular were sponged walls and dado rails.

I quite like stencilling but moderation went out of the window back then.
I've always been a 'just paint all the walls pure brilliant white' person. The colour is added later, and I love bright and primary colours.

Edited

Sponging! Stippling! 😀

My very first friend of a friend to buy a house (my friend was her lodger) went mad with stencilling as soon as she moved in. I dropped by after a long weekend, and the entire downstairs had become pale yellow with terracotta coloured stencilling.

Who's going to be checking anyone's bedroom to see if it's dated or not? The fashion police? Miranda Priestly? Does it matter, if you like it? You're not on a TV show.

Mine has a 70s theme, which is deliberate. I dread to think what you'd all say!

In answer to your question, I honestly don't know. So I'm not much use am I?

MiaKulper · Today 09:56

And teal, mustard, grey, F&B, 'pops of colour', 'elevated', 'curated' etc can FRO.

I'd probably love it.

Your wedding photo above the dressing area is far too small for the space.

it’s a lovely photo so I’d have that as the centrepiece, and add other photos that you love around it - you can mismatch the frames and build it up over time

Honestly - yes

I don’t think the OP does like it, though. Enough to post online about it.

I personally hate rooms that look interior designed, and the ‘show home’ look makes me want to throw things. I like my house, but I’m sure other people would be horrified. On the stairs there’s a place where I just liked the way old paint colours were showing through from a huge scrape (possibly caused by previous owners moving a large piece of furniture) so I left it. My mother twitches every time she sees it. 😀

Contrary to what everyone else seems to be saying, I would advise that if YOU like the red & have spent a lot on getting red blinds made to measure that you embrace the red more! I think what’s not working at the moment is quite a large room, with mainly neutrals and then spots of bright red around. Maybe embrace the red more with colourful bedding and a larger rug, in a slightly more burgundy or cherry red shade.
Buying a few soft items / duvet cover and pictures for the walls could cost less than £100 somewhere like Dunelm.
Also I would paint the walls to be a warmer richer colour. All the walls in our house are painted quite strong colours and in my opinion it makes the rooms feel so much cosier. People often think painting dark colours will make a room feel dark, but it doesn’t have to. The right paint colour can totally transform a room, and again paint can be bought for under £100 for a room that size.

Ignore everyone moaning about bedside tables and fitted wardrobes being dated. Not everyone has a spare 10k (or wants to spend that much!) to refit their whole bedroom so as it’s Instagram worthy or looks like a spread in Elle Deco & that’s ok!! The rest of us make do with the expensive items we’ve already got and style other things nicely to bring it all together. (I say that as someone with a degree in design who’s worked in interiors / homewares industry for years).

I agree with you about a strong wall colour, @RubyFlax — especially when so many of the walls sloping mean you can’t hang pictures. But the OP doesn’t want to change that.

Not everyone. I like the red blinds.

Yes

Thank you all for your input. I have got new lamps, we like them. Still looking for ottoman. I won't be posting any more on here now.

They suit their place, @Readinggirl .

You've been a great 'OP'. Best wishes.

It really isn't. Magnolia was what people painted their rooms in about 1980.

And in the mid noughties - there’s a reason my university halls were painted what I called “depression magnolia”. It was fashionable again then too.

It wasn't fashionable. It was a bland not-quite-white used everywhere because it was unlikely to look grubby as quickly as white paint.

I actually think it’s all of it sorry OP. The Magnolia is very 2008, the bedding is also very 00s and the bedside cabinets are very 90s. Time for a refresh!

Who cares, it looks fine and the OP mainly likes it. Most of us can’t just change everything.

She posted though asking if it was dated? She just didn't like the replies 🤷‍♀️

MiaKulper · Today 18:15

I don't think that's fair @corblimeygvnr . The thread has been popular and OP has accepted comments graciously.
