We've had a new mattress, so decided to clear everything off our ottoman. Our bed & Ottoman very rarely looks this tidy. Does this look dated?

Lovely, spacious and comfy looking room and nice, the brown chair looks good there too.

I like red and like the ottoman and blinds, like PPs would change the lamps and keep the red ones for spares!

Rubyupbeat · 14/05/2026 20:33

If you like it who cares?
I have 2 white and grey bathrooms, to be 'modern', but I've never liked them, I love turquoise and so for our ensuite, that's what we had, much to my husbands horror, not at all modern, but I bloody love it!

Thank you, can't really take the slogans off the walls as the paint would peel off.

Warm it with a hairdryer then it should peel off.

not much “love” going to happen in that squeaky metal bed 🤔

Your post shows you up as being rude and immature.

Why would it squeak? Mine is metal and silent

pollydollydoo · 14/05/2026 21:16

Sorry OP, but that chair doesn’t improve things really. It just looks like someone took a chair from an office conference room and put it infront of your dressing table.

spend some time on Pinterest and look at bedroom styles you like. In all honesty though, you’ll need to do a fair bit to bring it up to date properly, so it depends on how much you can be faffed. Small changes like bigger lamps and a new dressing table chair won’t change the feel of the room because the cohesive whole is just too ‘early 2000s’ style wise

Ohpleeeease · 14/05/2026 21:18

I think your bedroom is perfectly fine OP. Who’s going to see it except you and your DH?

The problem with this thread is that there are so many different tastes and suggestions at play. What you want is one clear vision.

I’d ask ChatGPT to design you a room around your budget and favourite items and see what happens.

SwedishEdith · 14/05/2026 21:27

Something like this is a more substantial lamp. You can change the shade but it's a nice base.

Would these lamps work?

I personally find these lamps incredibly dated. And they’re really not my cup of tea.

However:

A bedroom is one of the most personal and private rooms in a house. It has to suit you (the rooms occupants) and nobody else.

Would I like your bedroom? Not particularly, no. The light floors and the cupboards in a similar shade seem a bit pale and clinical / „cold“ (for lack of a better word) to me whereas the contrast with the red is just too harsh in my personal opinion. The lamps would make that worse tbh. But I don’t have to like it!

I prefer a „warm“ but fairly clean (not a lot of knicknacks, no decorative pillows, a moderate amount of and paintings) bedroom aesthetic. Old wood furniture, cozy textures and colours I personally find calming…
But that’s simply what happens to work for us :)
And we haven’t stuck to it 100% due practical concerns, the room setup etc… (we both wanted good reading lamps and the aesthetic was absolutely secondary, to use one example.)

I actually think it’s all of it sorry OP. The Magnolia is very 2008, the bedding is also very 00s and the bedside cabinets are very 90s. Time for a refresh!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 08:42

The brown chair is horrible! I meant add a comfortable armchair! Not a plastic looking dining chair! I cannot believe anyone thinks it’s good!

I think the lack of taste on this thread is amazing. I’ve posted lovely bedrooms that aren’t expensive to copy. Lamps that are perfect. Berlinen to be white. Textures in beige and whites. Ideas for an ottoman. Yet we still have posters liking the red box! There’s no hope really and the brown chair has actually made me laugh. It’s like a B&B your granny would own,

Edited

Thanks, I like the neutral wardrobes etc it makes injecting colour when I want to, into bedding easier. I have taken the red rug away, and it looks ok but too bare. I have found a picture from another part of the house to put above the dressing table, and have added artificial flowers in the room. Will look at a different colour & larger ottoman, and lamps. We don't tend to read much in the bedroom, sometimes my Kindle, but it has a backlight.

I decided I didn't like the chair. Tbh, I find white bedding too bland for me. I wouldn't like white ottoman and I think a beige ottoman would just blend in with everything else. Now thinking deep red/burgundy/brown maybe. Will have to see what we can find. I do appreciate everyone's input. It is a good job we're are now all alike.

Thanks, our man issue is the the sloping walls (difficult to put pictures up) and the hallway that leads to ensuite etc, just past the dressing table (not a complete wall). I do understand I need to 'warm' the room up with different colours/textures which I will try when I find an ottoman etc that I like. I am looking for new lamps. I did decide against the chair. Have found a picture to put above the dressing table, and have taken up the rug (but it now feels bland). I like the basics plain so I can inject colour, when I want) with bedding etc. I do appreciate everyone's input, but glad we're all different.

@Readinggirl there’s nothing wrong with having the red as the accent. You just need to make sure you have all the right tones and textures. Keep it luxury if you know what I mean.
For the bedding, if you don’t want plain go with a nice white background with a nice deep red stripe or a small intricate floral. Nothing too big and garish then have a nice textured throw at the end of the bed. Something the pics here…

It really isn't. Magnolia was what people painted their rooms in about 1980.

Yes. Then slightly later on came the floral borders by the ceiling. And stencilling. God, the stencilling.

Forgot to add the floral options

I think a deeper red would be much better and more easy on the eye. You should stay away from the McDonald's red and go for other shades of red that aren't as jarring. They don't have to be the exact same shade either, a more dusky red works well with burgundy for example.

Yes. Then slightly later on came the floral borders by the ceiling. And stencilling. God, the stencilling.

They were everywhere. Also popular were sponged walls and dado rails.

I quite like stencilling but moderation went out of the window back then.
I've always been a 'just paint all the walls pure brilliant white' person. The colour is added later, and I love bright and primary colours.

It's not lack of taste, it's different tastes.

Much of it is different tastes, yes. (I’m not one for neutrals, myself — I have a tall Victorian house with strong, often dark colours, which wouldn’t be for everyone or every space).

But I think there are some, and I suspect the OP is one of them, who don’t have an eye for what things/colours/ finishes work or don’t work together in a space.

She has a room she thinks doesn’t work, keeps saying she doesn’t like the neutral suggestions made by some posters and says they’re ‘bland’, but her own room is currently far blander than any of what’s been suggested.

When people pointed out that her bedside lamps were wrong for the room, she rejected some suggestions and posted instead a blingy diamanté effect lamp that wouldn’t work with anything at all currently in the room except the bed, when she’s said she can’t afford to do a complete redecoration.

OP, it might help if we knew more about your taste. What about posting a photo or two of bedrooms you like the look of?
