We've had a new mattress, so decided to clear everything off our ottoman. Our bed & Ottoman very rarely looks this tidy. Does this look dated?

Sorry, yes. It’s the red accents I think. But if you love it, you’re presumably the only ones looking at it.

Littleblackcat80 · 12/05/2026 19:18

It looks lovely and clean but tbh a bit dated too.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 12/05/2026 19:20

Yeah girl, sorry xx

Flomingho · 12/05/2026 19:21

It looks very nice but I am getting an early to mid 2000s vibe from the red accessories. If they were changed to neutral colours it would work.

bedfrog · 12/05/2026 19:23

It looks lovely and neat. I don't think it looks dated, but even if it did, is that a problem? If you like it, go for it.

Ohgoose · 12/05/2026 19:24

The red is a bit dated and a bit jarring with the neutral background. It looks like you’re using the red to add character to the room.

Do you like it though? That’s all that matters really.

truepenguin · 12/05/2026 19:24

It's lovely and tidy. Call it vintage and style it out.

Allseeingallknowing · 12/05/2026 19:24

Who cares what anyone thinks? It’s your bed, and you like it, so fine.

MynameisnotJohn · 12/05/2026 19:25

Yes. Red and grey aren’t in and remind me of teenage boy bedrooms. Slogans on homewares look dated. Easy and cheap to fix though if you fancy a change. Warm neutrals. A rug.
Do YOU like it? That’s all that matters.

Favouritefruits · 12/05/2026 19:33

Yes it’s dated but if you are happy it doesn’t really matter! Nobody sees your bedroom anyway! It’s nice and tidy though

Thanks. I've used the red as the room is mostly neutral, we have red blinds and red rug. It's a large room, so needed to inject some colour. Tu be fair, it hasn't been decorated for some years, due to expense.

There isn't any grey, the throw is green. Thank you though. It hasn't been decorated for a few years though, due to cost etc. The rest of the room is neutral, except for the rug.

I'm not sure it's dated. It's nice.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 12/05/2026 19:42

It looks a bit dated but could modernise it with different style cushions. For example different patterns and textures in muted colours. Similar with the throw.

Branwellgirl · 12/05/2026 19:45

I don’t think it’s dated - I would remove the ‘love’ cushion. That will make a big difference.

reelcat · 12/05/2026 19:45

It's not my style but I think what matters is whether you like it. Things go in and out of fashion so I think it is important to not worry about that (changing things is so expensive!) And go with what you like

Thanks. The throw won't always be there though to be honest, so not sure what colour to use. We had red blinds made for us, as we have odd shaped windows, and the cushion covers match.

Your only problem is limiting yourself to one bright colour. Have a look at Dunelm’s new collection by Sophie Robinson. It’s an explosion of colour. Be brave and add more. Dated isn’t the problem, you’ve just been a bit restrained for a modern look.

SeashellDREAMS · 12/05/2026 19:47

Will it really make you feel badly if many/most MNers agree that it's a 'bit dated'? Are you selling your home? Getting ready for an 'open house'?

Personally, I like a red accent; reminds of the Scandinavian look, clean lines, neutrals with a cheerful accent that makes you feel good, while adding some warmth and personality to your most private room in the home.

P.S. our 'friend' AI says that although the Tuscan look is not as much in style after the greys and neutrals became the dominate colour scheme; Red is making a come-back , 2024-2026 in small, and unexpected accents! So enjoy, I think it's very nice.

somethingbeginningwithb · 12/05/2026 19:48

Yes, extremely dated and not in an intentional vintage way. The bed and side tables remind me of the furniture in my rented accommodation 25 years ago.

AgnesX · 12/05/2026 19:50

New bedside cabinets and lamps we ould help update it.

AnOldCynic · 12/05/2026 19:50

Can you go all in on the red? Paint the walls in a dark red to match or compliment the blinds.

Change or paint the drawers, keep the ottoman. And maybe a new set of bedding in deep jewel colours?

Thank you. No, not selling, but I'm not very good at this sort of thing. I was wondering more if the throw at the end of the bed was outdated? I didn't think the red would be, to be honest.
