We've had a new mattress, so decided to clear everything off our ottoman. Our bed & Ottoman very rarely looks this tidy. Does this look dated?

Where do people put all these cushions when they go to bed? We stayed in a b and b that had about 10 cushions on the double bed, which we had to put on the floor every night.

Takemeawayy · 14/05/2026 16:09

I haven’t rtft but if keeping the red I would paint the walls a blue either a denim blue or something a little brighter. Color drench the room. The red would then contrast and be less in your face than it is against the cream

ChatGPT.
you can give a very specific brief including specific SKUs if you want.
I kept this simple and inline with what OP has said she likes. Except moving the bed because I wanted her to see how it transforms the space.

I wouldn't be opposed to moving the bed, but can't, as just past the dressing table, we have like a corridor that leads to ensuite etc ( therefore, not a full wall)

If you stick to your red highlights, stronger colours on the bed (definitely not pale blue) and an update of bedding style itself would improve things. Red is a bit of a thug, so if you’re keeping it you’ll need to find colours that either complement it or contrast with it, but nothing wishy-washy.

Can you ditch the red and embrace the neutrals?

Can't have pictures as the wall is sloping

It is a dated look. The red accents / not matching pillows and random patterned duvet. But very clean and tidy.

They might work but they're horrid.

The pillows match the duvet cover. I do have other designs of duvet covers that I change. I find some of the pics on this thread quite bland to be honest (plain).

No, it’s a room where you should rest. Not boogie like it’s 2003.

Well, if your taste is bling (as suggested by these (to me, horrifying) lamps, embrace that, obviously.

But that's not what your room currently looks like. Those lamps won't go with anything else that's currently in your room. People are suggesting neutrals because the vast majority of what's currently in your room is neutral -- the walls, the carpet, the built-in wardrobe, the other furniture. All beiges/creams/light woods. It would be simplest, and least costly, to either (1) eliminate the pops of red and lean into neutrals or, (2) as was suggested by someone via AI near the start, to introduce a medium tan colour as an interim colour to pull together the red with the pale neutrals already there.

At the moment, in colour terms, it's like most of the room is whispering really quietly and the small pops of red are screaming LOOK AT ME!!! on top of their lungs. You either need to eliminate one of the two, or get some medium voices to tie them together. Like a choir.

If you want a room in which those Las Vegas casino blingy lamps work well, you will have to get rid of literally everything else in the room, other than the mirrored bedframe. Can't you see that?

NotAWurstToIt · 14/05/2026 18:57

I don’t like the crystal lamps, but what about glass? You could change the shades to red if you like to match your blinds?

You just need taller ones than what you have.
Try propping up the ones you have with a couple of thick books and see if the scale looks better.
I'd go for bigger shades too.

I don't feel it's dated (I hate that term), but I feel as if all the things in the room aren't working well together. I think taller lamps are needed and not necessarily in red. The trunk at the end of the bed could use some jazzing up (nothing wrong with the red). Maybe a picture on the wall with red accents in it would bring the red together. But I'm no designer and i have house that hasn't been updated since mid 2000s and I still love it, "dated" or not. 😊

That’s a lovely sized bedroom! I like the red. The only thing I’d definitely change is the bedding. Maybe cream? Definitely something neutral.

Thanks, think I'd find plain cream too bland

Hayley1256 · 14/05/2026 20:00

OP, you keep saying you'd find certain things to bland so if you like the room than just keep it as it is. Personally I think it looks very dated and the kind of room you'd get in cheap BnB.

Some of the pictures that have kept the red in but made it more modern and elegant look fab and wouldn't cost a lot to implement.

Thank you all your for feedback, I didn't think I'd get that much to be honest. I will look to change a few things. Does this brown chair look better with the dressing table? Not new, just moved from another room to try it out. This photo shows you this is not 1 long wall.

@Readinggirl , you seem really nice. Your room is fine.
The only horrors are the decals on the walls.
I'd not hurry into buying anything.
Keep an eye on Freecycle and charity shops for bedside lights. When you're at a loose end, have a browse in home decor shops and websites.

I felt like I needed a very large stiff drink after seeing those hideous table lamps.

Thank you, can't really take the slogans off the walls as the paint would peel off.
