Does this look dated?

We've had a new mattress, so decided to clear everything off our ottoman. Our bed & Ottoman very rarely looks this tidy. Does this look dated?

Oof OP, sorry, I would say yes too.

I think it’s the matchy matchy colour scheme. The red really sticks out whereas I think modern decor tends to go for complementary accents rather than one single colour.

The slogan cushion is a bit 90s too.

I also think some colour in your walls might make it look more modern, but that’s personal preference.

As others say though, if you like it then it really doesn’t matter if you’re on trend or not! Theres nothing wrong with something that looks a bit dated if you love it!

Yes, extremely dated and not in an intentional vintage way. The bed and side tables remind me of the furniture in my rented accommodation 25 years ago.

The thing is, the bedside tables match the fitted wardrobes.

Can you go all in on the red? Paint the walls in a dark red to match or compliment the blinds.

Change or paint the drawers, keep the ottoman. And maybe a new set of bedding in deep jewel colours?

I think the room would be too dark painted red. I may think about the other options though, new bedding for king size bedding can work out expensive. It is something to think about though. Thanks

Asda have some reasonably priced bedding. Some of it has red accents and stripes. I’ve always been pleased with any bedding I’ve got from there.

YellowDogg · 12/05/2026 20:05

Honestly does it matter? Don’t change a thing OP, it looks clean and cared for.

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/05/2026 20:05

I’d incorporate more colours as suggested by updating the duvet cover at some stage. This would give it a more modern look.

Snoken · 12/05/2026 20:08

It is dated and quite mis-matched style wise. The mirrored bed frame doesn't go with the bedside cabinets, but I guess it does go with the stark red ottoman. It looks quite cold (not as in temperature) and red isn't a calming colour that you should have in a bedroom. There is a reason why fast food places are red. They want people to come in, eat quickly, and leave.

I think you should paint the walls something like olive or sage, change the cushions for more warmer colours and either throw something over the ottoman or just get rid of it. You could paint the bedside cabinets too I guess, unless they are mdf. The bed frame will still be an issue but it might not stand out as much if you have more muted colours around it.

I know someone said up-thread that it's a Scandinavian look, it really isn't. Scandinavian look is muted, natural materials and soft lighting. I do think you could get some inspiration from googling Scandi bedrooms though.

Thanks, I have got other duvet covers that I alternate. 1 has got quite a few colours in actually.

Yes, everything a part from the carpet maybe. Looks nice though so who cares.

SourdoughSally · 12/05/2026 20:13

I think it's the contrast between the red and other neutral colours that's dating it.

Try to add some touches of other shades of red, burgundy or darker neutrals.

If you can't afford to change much, then scour charity shops for textiles or ornaments in these colours.

Looks like a good base, just needs a few extra touches to give it the wow factor 😀

Your only problem is limiting yourself to one bright colour. Have a look at Dunelm’s new collection by Sophie Robinson. It’s an explosion of colour. Be brave and add more. Dated isn’t the problem, you’ve just been a bit restrained for a modern look.

Thanks, I have got other duvet covers, that I alternate. 1 has got quite a few colours in, so wouldn't really want different cushions to suit different duvet covers.

Yes it’s rather dated but looks tidy and clean. I’d go for a maximalist duvet cover, ditch the love cushion, get some new handles for your drawers in a metal to match the bed frame to give it a little lift. If you like it as is there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Chiefangel · 12/05/2026 20:18

I’d just change the cushions on your bed, apart from that I think it’s nice.

littlebilliie · 12/05/2026 20:20

I like red but you don’t have enough of it, it’s looks like after thought. Bringing in more reds would lift it and in different shades

CloudyBayPlease · 12/05/2026 20:21

Yes, extremely dated. The red bits in particular. The pattern on the duvet and beside drawers also look quite 1980s.

thetinsoldier · 12/05/2026 20:22

Not dated so much as neutral. I think if you painted/wallpapered the wall behind the bed that would really jazz it up.

Substance · 12/05/2026 20:23

I think it looks great. Agree with the person though who said you could add even more colour. A few more bright colours would be lovely.

Ohpleeeease · 12/05/2026 20:24

There you go OP. Twelve quid.

The Habitat duvet cover is actually very nice and would pull the red accents together nicely.

I like the idea of changing the handles, but have no idea how to do that, and my hubby isn't good at DIY either 🤣

It is pretty dated, but it’s homely and If you like it then that’s the important thing.

Would you like to update it? You’d be surprised what can be achieved with £150.

flagpolesitta · 12/05/2026 20:40

It’s dated but I don’t regard that as a bad thing
