We've had a new mattress, so decided to clear everything off our ottoman. Our bed & Ottoman very rarely looks this tidy. Does this look dated?

HI OP,
Yes, this room needs an overhaul. Are you able to share any other photos from different angles.

The beside tables look cheap and probably date the room more than anything else. The red box is too small for the space. The bed frame looks like it belongs in a 1980s sitcom. The carpet is standard issue cheap as we can find from the day.

I haven't read all the replies, so not sure what other comments or suggestions have been put forward to you.

I would change the bedside tables and get some bigger lamps.
I would get a colourful quilt/throw.
I would get a big colourful rug that covers as much of the carpet as possible.

What wardrobes/curtains/chairs/other aspects are there in the room?

I'd get on Facebook marketplace and find a new bed frame, and new tables etc.
layer colour and fabrics/textures.

The bedside cabinets are very similar to the wardrobe to be honest, I thought a good, neutral base. I have posted a photo of the rest of the room, the wardrobe/drawers run along the entire wall. We are in the process of tidying/getting rid of clothes lying about etc. It's not a room that we are in much, during the day the to be honest. I really did think it was quite calming, but can see now, the bright red maybe too much. Would like a fabric ottoman, but trying to find 1 that isn't too expensive. Will try to change lamps but having trouble finding some that I like.

I couldn't do the totally bland, neutrals look. I do have brighter duvet covers, but trend to change, so this one isn't always on the bed. The bed frame we bought in 2003, before we got married and don't see the point of changing, when it's not broken. Thanks for the advice though.

I would use a dark wood paint on the wardrobe and bed side table and change the handles. Then the rest could be done over time. New bedsheet with red so it matches the blinds.

Sorry I hadn’t seen the other photo.
definitely a massive rug. I’d also consider moving the bed to where the dressing table is.

re new things, look in facebook market place. You can easily update without spending much.

what type of lamp do you like?

Habitat has nice lamps and they have regular sales. This type of thing is simple and you can choose your own shade.

Buy Habitat Tapered Wood Table Lamp - Walnut & Natural | Table lamps | Habitat https://share.google/cDHEtibXiXqLnDyVQ

Thanks, I think if I am going to change lamps, I would want something a bit more elaborate.

I'd prefer the bed facing the windows to be honest.

Plenty of ways to update as people have said. Your seem to struggle visualising so here are two concepts. I’ve kept red as you like it, IMO that is what’s dating the look when paired with the pale wardrobes.

I have red accents in my bedroom. I'm as tacky as fuck.

Me too.

Depends on the balance of the room.
Also where the doors are.

Guess what people, both the Sunday supplements in both the sun and Mail have red accessories as the latest trend.

It’s about balance and tones. The red in OPs room in the way it is presented is what people are commenting on.

It was just an example but there's loads more on there.

Bring in some prints with a little red to pull it all together. an old fashioned eiderdown style bed throw in a busy small floral might look more now. When you find your floral you can mute the red by introducing some of the other colours in the print. Red is a very strong colour so I would take some out - definitely lose the red lamps as they draw the eye too much. If you can put the ottoman somewhere else I would as it doesn't look very good against the metal bed. Try to soften it - wicker would be nice eg for lampshades. Clear off the bedsides if possible and put up some pretty pictures either above the headboard or each side above each bedside table.

Allseeingallknowing · Yesterday 14:15

What a lovely, large bedroom!

Upsetbetty · Yesterday 14:16

For me it’s the bedding to be honest. It’s way too fussy and does not go with the red or the carpet!

rainbowstardrops · Yesterday 14:31

That’s a lovely sized bedroom! I like the red. The only thing I’d definitely change is the bedding. Maybe cream? Definitely something neutral.

I like what you've done with the neutrals and olive green accents there.

Which app do you use for visualising, please? I've a few rooms I'd like to try out.

ChatGPT.
you can give a very specific brief including specific SKUs if you want.
I kept this simple and inline with what OP has said she likes. Except moving the bed because I wanted her to see how it transforms the space.

The prob with prints, is the sloping ceiling above the bed and by the windows and TV.

I like the idea of changing the position of the bed, but we can't, as that's not a solid wall. Just past where the dressing table is currently, we have a corridor that leads to ensuite etc, in other words, but solid, full wall.

Yes I saw that so I would go for something small and cute like framed postcards of some art you like. Wooden frames to match the bedside cabinets. They would just provide some depth and a focal point in your room plus tie in the bedside cabinets.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 15:29

No! Not cream bedding! Grandma look. Just go with fresh white and textures.

Thanks, it's a possibility, but far too plain for my tastes. Gives me some ideas though.
