What else can I do to this room?

I’ve reclaimed the living room. This is going to be my yoga room & my space for peace and quiet.

What else can I add to it to make it more cosy?

Maybe a rug? I want to buy some cushions but I don’t want them to clash with the hypothetical rug. A throw perhaps?

I have a max budget of £150. Please help!!

No that one’s not for me. Too much of that one green and although there’s a tiny bit of a shade that might work with the throw, it clashes too much for me. Also find that main green too splotchy! But that’s my taste!

Get the artwork you love, with composition/colours that speak to you, and then make the rest of it work. If need be the throw can be repurposed.

happytobemrsg · 14/01/2023 13:05

Thank you so much for your help @TangledWebOfDeception I’m leaning towards the blue JL one. I’m going to stick some paper together to see if it works size-wise

Take a photo of the mock-up in situ and we can help you decide if it’s right/what you want!

happytobemrsg · 14/01/2023 14:07

Mock up created but too heavy to stick up 😂 will have to have a re-think. Will also need DH’s help!

I do like the textured rug.

That plant looks top heavy for the size of its pot - as though it will easily be toppled over - I'd be looking out for a larger pot, if it's possible to transfer it to another one.

I agree about avoiding the colour teal with natural greens and olives - it will "kill" natural greens.

Unless it was a gift, I would ditch the ornament on the shelf (does it say "Mrs"?). The ampersand/large alphabet letters thing on shelves look very dated and clichéd now.

I'd replace it with something more individual, like a piece of charity shop studio type pottery in earthy or terra cotta shades or a turned wooden bowl and lots of books.

happytobemrsg · 14/01/2023 15:08

@Fremdschämen the plant isn’t real (we can’t have real ones because my cats either eat or pee in them!). The Mr & Mrs was made by my mum & used on our top table so I’d like to keep if possible. I’m on the look out for more unique bits to go in the room.

Ah it's understandable you want to keep it then! If it had come out of the Next catalogue I might be encouraging you to let it go, but it's personal to you and that gives it authenticity.

Charity shops are brilliant for picking up objects d'art to come together in an organic way (sounds a bit rude! 😄). Just make sure you pick mindfully so it's in keeping with your overall theme and in the right colours to properly go. Bargains aren't bargains if they're not actually what you wanted/needed! And again, no need to rush. Just pick something up here and there as you find things you really love/that speak to you.

I do agree on the plant - you could buy a bigger plant pot anyway and just pop the whole thing inside. Will give it a more solid looking base. Or you could buy another, slightly bigger plant in a bigger pot to sit next to it which will also help.

I think your new rug looks lovely @happytobemrsg - a great choice and size!

Art-wise, I like the one you posted at 12.35...you definitely need something large if you're not going to be adding a shelf or fire surround to the chimney breast.

Mammaplanner · 14/01/2023 18:29

Loving your update’s @happytobemrsg

Pillowjoy · 14/01/2023 19:05

The problem with the most recent picture is that the predominant colour is a cool bluish-green whereas the greens in your room (plant and throw) are warm, yellow-y moss greens, and it clashes.

slamwich · 14/01/2023 19:45

@happytobemrsg This is what I've got for pictures in my greige room.

TangledWebOfDeception · 14/01/2023 20:20

Ah do you think so @Pillowjoy. I confess I got all excited by the blue and thought there must be a way to make it work, didn’t pay much attention to warm/cool! In that case, @happytobemrsg I’d probably go for the other one (whose frame you didn’t like).

mathanxiety · 14/01/2023 20:29

The teal in that picture is too vivid. I'd go with a much darker shade.

mathanxiety · 14/01/2023 20:31

I like tangledwebofdeception's painting.

Lovely colours and the amount of white in it makes it seem light and airy while still being substantial.

mathanxiety · 14/01/2023 20:36

Sorry, that was the notonthehighstreet picture. I think it works really well.

Agree with TangledWeb wrt proportions.

Sorry for confusion.

mathanxiety · 14/01/2023 20:38

Also love the John Lewis one, though portrait works better than square.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 14/01/2023 20:45

Get the tv on the wall above fireplace and get rid of the plastic unit. Get rid of the furniture in front of the radiator and the little table(?) too.

The sofas both need to pulled forward a little - it looks like the furniture has been pushed back as far as it can absolutely go... I know you want floor space space but it actually makes the room look smaller/odd.

Definitely needs a rug and some colour added to the room. Get some colour on the walls, plants on the book shelves and lots of coloured cushions on the sofas.

Fremdschämen · 15/01/2023 09:22

OP: "The Mr & Mrs was made by my mum & used on our top table so I’d like to keep if possible."

Of course. Hope my comment didn't come across as rude.

JS1867 · 17/01/2023 16:56

I feel like its missing some sort of centre piece in the room. Other than that it looks pretty great! Maybe you need a nice coffee table? Idk about you but I like a proper wooden coffee table and I think it would go nicely to match with your laminate flooring.

Theres a place I've bought some side tables from called Funky Chunky furniture. It's really good quality stuff but it can be a tad bit pricey. They do competitions sometimes on Good Housekeeping or Marie Claire sometimes to get money off their products - definitely worth having a look at regardless.

I'll also give you a link because I think theres a competition to win £50 off at Funky Chunky, just in case you fancied having a go: comps.marieclaire.co.uk/competition/funkychunkyfurniturehomeaccessories_marieclaire.php?utm_source=forum&utm_medium=website&utm_campaign=Win£50HomeAccessoriesAtFunkyChunkyFurniture&utm_content=20230117

If not that, then I also think you can get some nice coffee tables on Wayfair, but they can also be a tad bit pricey. Definitely think a coffee table would bring the room together though.

Gonnaturnourlivesintoafreakshow · 17/01/2023 17:32

Absolutely needs a rub.

Gonnaturnourlivesintoafreakshow · 17/01/2023 17:33

I mean rug....

To me it's missing warm colours, rug, coffee table, plants, artwork, curtains.
