What else can I do to this room?

I’ve reclaimed the living room. This is going to be my yoga room & my space for peace and quiet.

What else can I add to it to make it more cosy?

Maybe a rug? I want to buy some cushions but I don’t want them to clash with the hypothetical rug. A throw perhaps?

I have a max budget of £150. Please help!!

Sounds perfect @happytobemrsg lovely and restful

happytobemrsg · 11/01/2023 20:00

Thank you @Chickenvoicesinmyhead & @slamwich i don’t think I’d be brave enough to share a pic of the finished room, especially since I’m sticking with grey 😂

Love a bit of greige me!

JamSandle · 11/01/2023 20:41

Colour, plants, rug, some wall art

happytobemrsg · 13/01/2023 10:44

Rug has arrived and now DH has seen how the room is transforming he is fully onboard. He wants to replicate the shelving on the other side of the chimney & inset the TV. I thought just replicating the cupboards at the bottom and having the tv sit on top would work but I think he wants the shelving too.

Currently my shelves are looking bare but I don’t want to fill them with rubbish. There’s a plant I like the look of in Next. I think I want to add more green in the room generally.

@happytobemrsg please post progress pics I love seeing what small steps make a big difference to rooms xx

LibertyLily · 13/01/2023 12:12

I'd love to see progress pics @happytobemrsg - please don't be worried about sharing them! It's great when posters update the thread with changes carried out 🙂

happytobemrsg · 13/01/2023 13:35

@LibertyLily @Questionsbarisurg
Here you go. I like a comparison pic too! I know the grey isn’t for everyone but I like it. I find it calming.

Oh that looks great! What a difference. The rug is perfect. Never apologise for your tastes - it's your space, you get to put what you love in it!

Questionsbarisurg · 13/01/2023 13:53

I love it. The rug is perfect and I love the shade of green throw. You’ve done an amazing job @happytobemrsg

TangledWebOfDeception · 13/01/2023 14:09

My suggestion for future purchases is be careful about too much green and grey. It will potentially end up looking two-dimensional. Add a third accent colour that ties in, and use that sparingly.

happytobemrsg · 13/01/2023 14:31

What colour would you suggest @TangledWebOfDeception ? And what sort of items could I bring into to the room?

I’m open to suggestions!!

Can anyone help. What is wrong with my lounge. Just had oak floor done but everything seems bland . Grey leather sofa and silver chenille curtains 3 bay windows in lounge

You're probably best to start your own thread but your rug is way too small for that space. You should be aiming for the front feet of your furniture to be on your rug.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 13/01/2023 17:51

Looking good @happytobemrsg ! Love the rug.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 13/01/2023 17:54

@Holmfirthrita would love to see a photo of your room with the rug twisted so that it’s parallel to the fireplace. All the energy is running straight out of the door at the moment.

Holmfirthrita · 13/01/2023 18:00

There you go the reason it is the other way is so our dachshund doesn’t slide when getting on and off the sofa

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 13/01/2023 18:09

@Holmfirthrita is there meant to be a photo?

Holmfirthrita · 13/01/2023 18:50

Sorry there is the photo

@Holmfirthrita that’s a really tricky space! The rug looks much better that way round when looking towards the door (though it still needs to be much bigger to reach under the sofas), but the proportions seem a bit odd when looking towards the dining table. You could go for a patterned/colourful rug as the rest of the room is quite blank - what about a Persian style?

Floor length curtains would be cosier and better proportions, though costly.

Do you have anything hanging above the sideboard? Looks like a blank wall so a picture would be good to draw the eye up. At the moment the bottom of the curtains and the top of the sofas are making a line around the middle of the room that cuts the room in half, which is a bad proportion - you want golden ration proportions (2/3rds) not half. So having art on the wall above the sideboard and perhaps in between the two windows would draw the eye up. Make sure you hang it at the golden ratio height. And a plant taller than the sofas somewhere would break up that horizontal line too.

Yes totally agree with your suggestions thx
would you go for plain curtains or keep to plain and what would you suggest with cushions as I am struggling

Holmfirthrita · 13/01/2023 20:31

Advise on my blinds please as well
Does it look better with the roller blinds or small Venetians as there are 3 windows not sure .

It’s always hard to tell from photos because you can’t usually see the whole space at once nor understand scale and it’s hard get the context around it for flow/etc..

But from looking at it I would put one sofa directly facing the fireplace, hugging the longer side of the rug IYSWIM, and the other sofa at a right angle to the first (so hugging the short side. If there’s space to do that, it will always look nicer (imo) than furniture placed up against walls around the edges of a room. Especially where you then have a rather awkward placement of fireplace at an angle.

You could see if it works to have one sofa with its back to the door but if it’s very squashed that probably won’t work. Otherwise I’d try to place it on the other side. Which then causes issues with the dining table...but if the dining table can be moved at all it might still be an option.

Hope that’s understandable!

FusionChefGeoff · 13/01/2023 20:39

I'd get some lovely trailing plants for the upper shelves

Holmfirthrita · 13/01/2023 20:49

Yes makes sense the room though is quite small and the tv by the door in the corner . We have the 2 sofas and they just won’t fit like that aaaahhhh! so frustrating. Maybe a larger rug will make it better as you say. Any advise regards the cushions snd blinds thx
