What else can I do to this room?

I’ve reclaimed the living room. This is going to be my yoga room & my space for peace and quiet.

What else can I add to it to make it more cosy?

Maybe a rug? I want to buy some cushions but I don’t want them to clash with the hypothetical rug. A throw perhaps?

I have a max budget of £150. Please help!!

Definitely colour on the walls.

Wow! So many replies. Thank you!

Unfortunately we can’t re paint the walls as we are dealing with a damp issue. No redecorating until that’s sorted sometime this year.

Looks like a big rug, cushions & bigger artwork is the way to go. I can’t have real plants (I either kill them or the cat tries to pee in it). Would be open to a very nice fake one. Like the idea of a training one on the shelf.

Can you guys help me search? Can you help with links?

It’s a really lovely room. For a yoga space, you could find a rug annoying as you will have to move it every time you put your mat down.

Jux · 02/01/2023 16:07

I love that rug!

Then cushions which pick up the red and blue.

If you really can't have plants you could have a nice floor lamp, or wall sconces on either side of the picture.

You need books on those shelves. Badly!

GladiatorSandals · 02/01/2023 16:12

I agree about the painting and the clock, but for me, the real issue is that all the shapes in the room are hard-edged, straight and boxy — I think you need some variety, whether that’s with a rug, throws, cushions, plants etc.

Definitely plants

happytobemrsg · 02/01/2023 16:15

What do you think of this rug? Too busy?

I have a cream sofa suite - and then a big bright rug, with assorted bright Indian style cushions on the sofas with little mirrors and random colours.

happytobemrsg · 02/01/2023 16:18

This one is nice but I expect it’ll be too expensive in the bigger size

I'm sure these are not to everyone's taste but how about the Lego flower bouquet?

Normally I'm not a fan of artificial plants but these are so obviously fake and quirky so I make an exception.

The rug you have posted is lovely and blends in - but it is dull. The room needs brightening up rather than things that blend in.

Tulipomania · 02/01/2023 16:19

Get rid of the clock.

Add some books. Every room in my house has books except the bathroom, I can't bear houses without them.

Plants - real or good fake.

Much larger picture on the chimney breast.

Patterned rug.

mathanxiety · 02/01/2023 16:20

I like the cool, spacious vibe the room has now.

I would add an oversized framed picture over the fire. Something abstract that is basically white but with bold colours splashed throughout. I would avoid monochrome, and also anything that has tones of gray in it, or pastels

The reason to go for art with a large white field/component is to preserve the sense of space in the room. The reason to stick to bolder colours is to echo the solidity and groundedness of your furniture and the rich tone of your wood floor.

I'd put a few interesting, colourful items on your shelves, a few books, and I'd add a large plant or two.

If you get a rug, I'd suggest one in a light, neutral cream, with texture, or minimal pattern in a mid gray. For cushions, I'd stick with light cream, and the same goes for throws.

In general, go with the vibe you've already got there. Don't overlay something that contradicts what the room is saying.

Tulipomania · 02/01/2023 16:21

OKA does good faux plants but they would use up your budget very quickly.

mathanxiety · 02/01/2023 16:22

YYY to 'remove the wall clock'.

GladiatorSandals · 02/01/2023 16:22

I’d go for a kilim in soft colours. Something like these?

I have that rug it's actually much brighter in real life, it's gorgeous

FluffingtonMuffington · 02/01/2023 16:23

The one with the tigers on it that is

CoorieInByTheFire · 02/01/2023 16:26

I’d put a matching cupboard and shelves in the right side alcove with the tv on one of the shelves. Big colourful picture over the fireplace. If you don’t want colour you need to add textures to the room with cushions and throws.

I can’t have real plants so I have lots of fake ones, they’ve really improved recently and look pretty good now. They’re also easy to keep clean, I just spray with a soapy mix and pop mine in the shower for a rinse.

mewkins · 02/01/2023 16:29

Depends if you want to use it more as a cosy room or yoga space. If I were using that as a living room I'd pain the chimney and maybe all of that wall a deep green. I'd also add some pattern in there but appreciate not everyone likes patterns. Agree that a big rug (maybe a natural sisal type one would be good).

WinterSnowing · 02/01/2023 16:30

Another one saying a much bigger picture over the fireplace. Have one other colour which the picture complements, say a blue or a brown, and get a few things to go with that colour like cushions, rug, ornament.

DH got me a big 1m parlour palm fake plant from b&q for my birthday last year, it’s great, my mum tried to water 🤣

ToBeOrNotToBee · 02/01/2023 17:01

Art on the wall above the fireplace or a mirror to reflect light, a nice hanging plant on the bookshelf and a nice rug on the floor to make it cosy.

Bouledeneige · 02/01/2023 17:16

It is very monochrome. I'd think about colour, pattern and texture. As others have said I'd go with a coloured, patterned rug. Cushions and plants. Maybe go with mixed up patterns on the cushions - maybe a smaller one with a much larger one. I'd also go with a larger picture on the chimney breast. In due course.
