What else can I do to this room?

I’ve reclaimed the living room. This is going to be my yoga room & my space for peace and quiet.

What else can I add to it to make it more cosy?

Maybe a rug? I want to buy some cushions but I don’t want them to clash with the hypothetical rug. A throw perhaps?

I have a max budget of £150. Please help!!

Is that a real plant? It needs real plants. And a bigger more colorful picture above the fire as the current one is too small.

(Sorry for multiple posts - I have mumtipld thoughts and end up having to come back)

A good exercise is to look at your mantle upside down. You want to proportions to be inverted to a traditional mantle with fireplace. So you need something bigger and wider than the fireplace at the top, with only a frame of bare wall around it. Then the fireplace will be smaller to complement it. That way the balance is right, even though it’s upside down.

’Mumtipld’ 😆😆 - multiple!

@TangledWebOfDeception I massively appreciate your help so thank you. I’ve explained the balance thing to DH. We will not be changing the fireplace BUT I do understand the balance thing. We need the picture to become the focus with the fireplace as a compliment rather than the other way around. What do you think of this picture:

@TangledWebOfDeception a photo I made with that picture. The throw doesn’t go.

@TangledWebOfDeception is right about balance being key. In your shoes, though, I would experiment with sizes by hanging large sheets of paper of various sizes on that wall to get a sense of what works, and I would wait, take my time and buy something I really liked, not just arbitrarily grab something that ‘will do’.

If you look at magnoliabox, the prints come in various sizes, and there’s a helpful mock-up of each size next to a five foot four woman so you can grasp scale.

SnowdaySewday · 14/01/2023 12:08

A white shelf above the fireplace, level with the shelf on the left, to break up the chimney breast space and continue the visual line across to the window sill.

Pillowjoy · 14/01/2023 12:10

What about something like these? All magnoliabox.com abstract collection.

It’s nice but you’re right the colours don’t quite go with the throw. You could possibly get around that by adding one of the colours in the print into your room as the third accent colour I mentioned previously. So that lovely berry shade, for example, would potentially tie in nicely with the green. Possibly also the peachy one, although I’d have to see them in person to know for sure. You could always move the throw and buy another one that matches better. 😁 But since you’ve already got the throw I’d be inclined to keep looking and buy a print that fits it rather than the other way around!

But i agree with pp - don’t rush it, don’t buy any print just to fill the space. Keep looking (unless you absolutely love this one). A mock up of size/shape with paper is a great idea.

I would want the artwork to be closer to square than portrait (although I know that does make finding the right one more difficult), otherwise you might end up with a very ‘vertical’ effect which I personally don’t really like.

TangledWebOfDeception · 14/01/2023 12:18

(Unless it’s noticeably wider in which case portrait would be just fine! But you don’t really want that if it’s very close in width to the fireplace, IMO)

I can’t seem to filter by abstract on magnolia box @Pillowjoy I’m doing something wrong!

I think I'd be looking for more pink or red in the picture.

If you go to ‘Subjects’ in the top menu, ‘abstracts’ is in there, alongside photographs, famous paintings, landscapes, typography etc. (some of it is godawful, but there’s a lot there.)

This is nice Picture

The last one you’ve just posted is the best one so far, IMO. The shape is good (for my tastes) and I think more colours are better. It also ties in well with the throw. The previous one (green and brown) was too two-dimensional for the room IMO and the green wasn’t quite right.

TangledWebOfDeception · 14/01/2023 12:40

There are also some nice colours that would work as your other accent shade. The mauve would work, but the peachy nude would be my choice.

happytobemrsg · 14/01/2023 12:41

This is nice. Would have to get rid of the green throw

Not peachy, now that I’ve looked again. Whatever that sandy shade is!

Weirdly @TangledWebOfDeception I don’t like how thick the frame is of the one you like. But I guess that can be changed?

TangledWebOfDeception · 14/01/2023 12:50

The John Lewis piece you’ve just posted is my favourite by far. Now we’re getting somewhere! See how important it is to keep searching?

Blue is another of my favourites, and very calming for me. So I am biased...but I think that would work very well. The rug would work perfectly fine so you wouldn’t need to get rid. What you would do is add some more accents in one of the colours in your print, and the green would become a secondary accent. It doesn’t all have to match exactly (in fact it’s often better that way), it just needs to coordinate well.

TangledWebOfDeception · 14/01/2023 12:52

Sorry not the rug! The green throw. It ties in well with one or two of the shades.
