What else can I do to this room?

I’ve reclaimed the living room. This is going to be my yoga room & my space for peace and quiet.

What else can I add to it to make it more cosy?

Maybe a rug? I want to buy some cushions but I don’t want them to clash with the hypothetical rug. A throw perhaps?

I have a max budget of £150. Please help!!

Have you tried one of the soft memory foam rugs that are meant to be playmats but looks like rugs - would be perfect for yoga! I love ours - looks so classy and is so easy to clean and lovely to walk on! I don't think I'll ever buy rugs again!

That looks fantastic. I'd never heard of them. Thanks . What's putting me off though is that I suspect my cats would LOVE scratching on that texture.

Notellinganyone · 02/01/2023 21:13

Books and more art on the wall.

spend it all on a new television stand, it’s a nice room but that stand ruins it.

Agreed. Beautiful room but that needs to go! More colour, some art, plants

happytobemrsg · 02/01/2023 22:58

What sort of tv stand would go better? Granted we have had it YEARS but I thought it was pretty inoffensive 😂

I put a rug, 8 cushions & 2 plants in my basket at Next and it came to £288… that’s without a new picture on the chimney breast… might have to stagger the transformation a bit

Try Wilko and TK Max for affordable cushions and a rug.

CymruChris · 02/01/2023 23:12

Some soft colour.
Bigger picture on the chimney breast.
Lots of plants!

Its a lovely light room!

DIceDaisy · 02/01/2023 23:15

The picture over the fireplace needs levelling, otherwise all looks fine.

SkylightSkylight · 02/01/2023 23:47

@happytobemrsg

i love your room! Love the grey.

make sure whatever rug you choose, it's ok for you to do yoga on as you don't want to have to move it each time.

I was reading an article the other day that said rugs should at least go under the front feet of any sofas. I not sure what I think, but it seems to be the current trend.

sadly I do agree the tv stand is dated. I think the trendies are still wall mounting their TV's. I hate TV's wall mounted, so I'd probably look for something made with reclaimed wood (being careful not to clash with the floor)

a bigger 'something' above the fire. I wouldn't put a shelf above the fire etc as I think that'll look like you're trying to make it something it's not.

a nice throw folded, laid over the end of the foot stool and some fluffy textured cushions on the sofa. Depending on the rug & throw, I'd probably go a light neutral colour.

given it's a space for you, not visitors, I wouldn't worry about it being matchup with the rest of the house!

I also wouldn't do one massive shop, I'd just enjoy buying things I love as I see them.

Twinsandsome · 02/01/2023 23:49

@happytobemrsg ive seen this rug in ikea and was very stocked at how good and thick it was for the money I have one very similar style from
next at twice the price and honestly not as good of quality as this one. www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/vedbaek-rug-low-pile-light-grey-40528900/#content

I know it’s more grey but it goes with the room and then you can add personality with cushions and a nice throw etc xx

whatadoodledo · 02/01/2023 23:57

A large mirror on the walk instead of that small picture and a rug.

Spaghetti201 · 03/01/2023 00:05

I would have a mantle and surround around the fireplace.

Pantoland · 03/01/2023 07:15

I’m not a fan of tv’s on the wall but In this room I’d put the tv above the fire, make built in units to match the other side. Get rid of the suitcases

Lupinhollyhocks · 03/01/2023 09:24

Not in budget, but for the future - reinstate the cabinetry where the TV is, replace the radiator with a low version and add a window seat.

Favouritefruits · 03/01/2023 09:31

@happytobemrsg well you have quite a bit of white wood, how about a white wooden tv stand, something to hide all the wires.

somthing along these lines, not sure why it’s so cheap

FusionChefGeoff · 03/01/2023 10:32

Low level lighting - maybe a corner lamp and / or led string lights in the bookcase?

I'd also be tempted to add a shelf / mantelpiece above the fire for plants / candles

LibertyLily · 03/01/2023 13:47

The room is lovely and bright but imho needs more colour, pattern and texture. Plants (faux are fine and far more realistic these days - we have a couple from Dunelm that are very convincing) would add life to the space too.

I think it needs personality which isn't necessarily achieved by buying everything at once from one place, however tempting it might be to create the full package in one go.

It's far better to buy what you love when you see it - our furniture and decorative stuff such as art has been collected over a number of years and from a wide range of places, such as ebay, carboots, fleamarkets, antique fairs, auction houses and shops such as Homesense/TK Maxx. That way you can spread the cost too which is always a plus!

Regarding a rug - we've always bought them larger than necessary and ensured the front feet of the sofa(s) sit on top. It makes the space appear larger, imho.

The TV stand is very dated, but there are so many options out there you should be able to find something that suits your style, space available and budget. I'm not usually a fan of wall-mounted tvs but in certain circumstances this can be the best decision. Until 18 months ago we had a smallish TV sitting on a huge antique sideboard where it frankly looked a bit silly. We briefly wall-mounted it above the sideboard which was actually an improvement.

Now we have a new, larger TV that would have been way too high for comfortable viewing if placed above that sideboard, so we took the decision to sell the massive sideboard and replace with a lower, mid century one that is just a little wider than the TV itself.

Here's our TV stand and rug (to give idea of size, not colour)....

Meant to add - our room isn't quite finished in those pics - skirting needs adding plus there's paint to touch up. The mirrors flanking the TV look unevenly spaced but that's just the photo angle 😉

bingoitsadingo · 04/01/2023 15:42

I'd get a wooden TV unit (preferably natural wood toned or white if not) as the glass and metal adds to the slightly cold feeling of the room. Ideally one with doors or at least a solid back with a cable hole to help hide the cables.

WhatDoYouWantNow · 04/01/2023 15:45

It looks like a clinic. Some colour, and soft accessories, perhaps

ODFOx · 04/01/2023 16:30

Move the song to under the clock and put a large colourful abstract or mandala on the chimney breast. Reflect the colours in your social ft furnishing accessories.

happytobemrsg · 07/01/2023 11:14

Thank you for everyone’s advice. Definitely limited in budget but I will take lots of your suggestions on board.

I like the idea of moving the picture under the clock & will do that when I find bigger artwork for the chimney breast.

I KNOW grey is not popular but I do like it. I find it calming. My favourite colour is green so I like the idea of adding plants & various greens alongside the grey. I want to add some more textures & pattern too.

I have also taken your comments on board regarding the tv cabinet & will eventually buy a new white wooden one. We actually built the shelving on the other side of the chimney breast (it was empty when we bought the house).

In the shorter term I’m thinking: rug, fake plants, cushions. You’ll be pleased to know I’ve put a couple of books on the shelves & will add to that. In the longer term: new artwork & a new tv unit.

TangledWebOfDeception · 07/01/2023 11:48

Definitely keep the colour scheme exactly as you want it and what feels good to you.

I agree that new artwork and new TV unit can wait.

Your plans sound great! I'd caution against buying all your soft furnishings in one go from one place but that's because I personally really dislike the 'picked this out of the catalogue' look - I always build room decor from as many different sources as I can so that it's organic and not prescriptive (but that might not matter to you so if it doesn't you could just pick coordinating accessories from one shop if you want to get everything in one go).

happytobemrsg · 07/01/2023 13:12

Thank you @TangledWebOfDeception! I’ve just ordered a huge rug which wiped out my budget 😂 so the rest will have to follow slowly. It’s grey & white but patterned & textured.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 07/01/2023 13:26

If it's a yoga room surely you'll haved to put a yoga mat down quite frequently, so I wouldn't put a rug in there. That's a beautiful floor, so I'd just leave it.

I agree with others about putting something bigger & with a bit of colour above the fireplace. Something to help you meditate? Then add a throw &/or cushions to go with it. I notice your clock is gold-coloured, so choose colours to help that tone in, too, or change the clock to a silver/grey one.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 07/01/2023 13:27

Too late with my advice about the rug, then.😂
