Well done to all the students whether they got exactly what they wanted or have survived a day of adjusting expectations.
We followed advice on this thread, especially from @mumsneedwineand my daughter got 4 interviews and 2 offers. Today she got the results she needed for her firm choice Sheffield and is very excited. She is more concerned about friends with disappointments for other subjects and helping them - lovely young people who will end up with a good plan but today is very tough for many so thinking of them all and sending much gratitude and best wishes to @mumsneedwineand all of you on this thread. Hope the students you support are doing ok

Our DDs will be in class together!

mumsneedwine · 14/08/2025 18:50

I'm having a well earned gin in the pub with colleagues. Love (& hate) results day. It's so lovely when it all goes right and utterly heart breaking when it doesn't. But tomorrow is a new day and new plans will be made.
Good luck to all the new young doctors. It's not an easy job and I really hope the NHS sorts itself before yours graduate. Enjoy the journey !

sproutsandparsnips · 15/08/2025 07:59

@JaninaDuszejkothank you that’s encouraging.
DS in hindsight should not have done maths, despite the top grades at GCSE he struggled and that dragged him down I think. So difficult when they are so young. He will live and learn. @ipredictariot5He has considered resitting but has decided against it.

The Liverpool interviews are very tough so she’s done well if she liked them - it’s freezing usually down there - she must have been nervous😂

Is there a separate entrance exam for medicine at Cambridge other than the UCAT? Someone is telling me there is and I am saying no there isn't - who is right? TIA!

It’s best to look at the Cambridge website for entry requirements but at quick glance, it’s just the UCAT but you can probably find a more in depth admissions policy on the website.

Has anyone got a god recommendation for a laptop? I would like one that has MS Office compatibility. Doesn’t need to be fancy, just enough storage and budget friendly.

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2025 11:50

@SuperSue77 you are right. Nothing other than UCAT required for anywhere these days.

My DS interviewed at Cambridge for Medicine. They used to use BMAT but this is no longer. It's UCAT for 2025 onwards.

good, not God! 🫣

@JuMcGoo mine started with her old Chromebook but did upgrade to an IMac at Xmas as was too slow. Used it with the pen thing. We used the education discount but still pricey. However has got her through med school, MSRA and now speciality exams and still going strong.

ipredictariot5 · 20/08/2025 05:13

Get a Mac my DD has done a 5 year vet medicine degree and no trouble with it ever. I’ve had mine
since 2018 and it’s the same
go for an older model but make sure not too old for it to update software

JuMcGoo · 20/08/2025 09:16

Thank you. She has an old Chromebook but it’s a bit slow these days (I know the feeling!). I think Apple is out of our price range. Looking at around £350-400 which I know is low but that’s all we can afford.

mumsneedwine · 20/08/2025 10:55

@JuMcGoo they just need a laptop of any variety so get one that is on deal somewhere. And make sure it backs up to the cloud ! We have had hardware fails just before exams and thankfully back up was all there and everything not lost.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 20/08/2025 13:40

@JuMcGoo I haven't bought a laptop buy do buy phones from sites such as music magpie or Back Market etc. They have good warranties and are a lot cheaper than new. We have only had 1 issue and it was replaced immediately. Also your local technical help shops probably sell refurbished with warranty. With either of these options she can probably get a higher spec option but still have warranty like new

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 22/08/2025 15:27

Very excited to say that after remarking process my DD has A*AA and will be going to her top pick, QUB!

@mumsneedwine was so helpful in the process - shes just amazing!

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2025 15:32

How is everyone’s uni prep going? Accommodation sorted? Mugs bought? Hotel’s booked for drop off day? It is very real now and I am feel very mixed about seeing DC go.

I have mixed feelings too! My DD is excited to actually get started and I’m excited for but crikey, I’m going to miss her! Just keep thinking at least she has quite long holidays this year.

Don’t know about everyone else but the last few weeks have been expensive!! Duvet, pillows, iPad, crockery etc. Not cheap but think we’re about done.

When is drop off day for everyone. We’re 13th.

WeCantGoOverIt · 02/09/2025 00:08

Drop off day is Saturday! Yes expensive, especially accommodation down payment! DC is so ready for the next step but the last few years seem to have gone so quick.

Groundhogday2021 · 02/09/2025 00:13

Best of luck to those starting next week! Took dd back to uni today for start of Year 2 and straight into clinical placement tomorrow! The last year has flown by but I do remember how much I missed her when she went.
Hope they enjoy freshers and make the most of first year…. Exciting times! 😊
