My daughter is going into second year at Truro. She’s loved it there so far. Congratulations.

DD is into Newcastle 🥳🥳🥳

Lucky girl! This was us 3 years ago - we’ve just moved DD into her Year 4 house! Wonderful city, wonderful coast, wonderful course!

DrFoxtrot · 14/08/2025 10:18

Did anybody else have difficulty accessing the A level results this morning? It’s been so stressful here. My son had no offers and we were poised at 8am to fill the Newcastle clearing form and call other unis.

Unfortunately, the CEDAR portal the sixth form use was down and nobody could get on. Volume of traffic was blamed! We had no idea of his results until we drove 25 mins into college, finally receiving them after 9am when the tutor could get them. By then the Newcastle form was not available. But it didn’t matter as he did not get a good grade in chemistry. He’s going to do biomed then grad entry medicine.

Honestly though, what a hideously stressful morning. If he’d have got better grades we’d have been so upset at the wasted time trying to access results for clearing. There were students crying at college and stressed looking parents. Who’d have thought that thousands of people might try to access their results online at the same time!

Well done to all who’ve got their places 🤩👏

sproutsandparsnips · 14/08/2025 10:24

Congratulations all. DS missed his grades and was not accepted. He is going with his insurance of medical pharmacology and after quite a lot of tears I think he is embracing it and will make a go of it.

Don’t write off resitting - my DD has just got in after being in same position last year. She’s delighted to get in today. Pharmacology and Medicine are v v different.

ipredictariot5 · 14/08/2025 10:46

Thanks @mumneedswine it’s been a long journey over six years !? our DDs now newly qualified vets and my other DD now into med school. My youngest also got a level
results too and promptly turned down his offers and announced he’s having a gap year

JaninaDuszejko · 14/08/2025 10:58

Been lurking because DD is thinking of applying for medicine next year. But for those whose DC have missed grades and are now looking at doing a different course, I just wanted to say I'm a senior scientist in the pharma industry and have many many colleagues who were "failed medics" at 18 who went on to do various biological sciences degrees at university then did PhDs and now have well paid, secure jobs with a good work life balance. Not getting into medicine is not a disaster.

Optimum19 · 14/08/2025 11:42

DD got into medicine at QUB! So relieved and excited for her. Thanks so much for all the help, advice and the calming words of those on here, especially the very wise and patient@mumsneedwine.
Best wishes to those who are continuing the process or just starting. It'll work out in the end.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 14/08/2025 12:03

DD got into Sunderland, she is 1 mark off the next grade boundary for 2 subjects so is doing a remark at the schools recommendation. She only needs 1 mark in chemistry & would then get QUB which is her first pick

ItsYourMoneyRalf · 14/08/2025 12:06

Confirmed place at Exeter here also. DS will.see your DC there!! Well done all x

islaoo · 14/08/2025 12:13

Dd confirmed for medicine at Lincoln. The last year of doing the Nottingham syllabus so she will get that Russell group degree in the end (not that it matters).

In the end she got A biology A chemistry and B in PE due to disastrous practical / coursework debacle where she couldn’t submit evidence for her preferred sport. She would have been close to an A on the exam sections but que sera.

Anyway she was accepted on the near miss and is so excited to start (and especially NOT to resit ucat!)

thanks to all the support in the group and congratulations to all your YP. Sounds like a lot of good news all round.

x

Thank you everyone who was so encouraging to me about my daughter and her near miss. She has been accepted for Medicine at Liverpool (her first choice). We are so made up and relieved after a looooong six week wait.

Such great news! Congrats to your DD!

Many thanks to everyone but especially @mumsneedwine for all your advice and support throughout the process. Best wishes all!

So pleased for her! Fab news!!

mondaytosunday · 14/08/2025 12:34

Out of curiosity medicine seems competitive with applicants sometimes taking two tries or more to get a place. But from the posts here they aren’t looking for the top grades. Does it all come down to ucat and interview?

mumsneedwine · 14/08/2025 13:07

@mondaytosunday I think AAA are pretty top grades ! But getting an interview is mostly UCAT (& other things at several Unis), then after interview it's still getting those grades.
If not good news today take time before making any fast decisions. You can accept a place on another course but if are thinking of taking a gap year then quickly sign up for UCAT too. Both things can be cancelled in the next few weeks when have had time to process.

Mumsnet always messes up the stars in a star - Dd got A star biology A in chemistry B in PE and A in EPQ. So she got equivalent to 3 As in UCAS points. which tends to be the typical medicine offer. Anecdotally a lot of med schools have softened on grades this year and admitted with one or two dropped grades.

KMMS would have you believe there is evidence AAB students perform better in med school and that’s why it’s their standard offer. I can’t quote their source as just heard it in an open day. But medicine doesn’t necessarily suit straight a star students as there’s quite a lot in it that can become routine / not always extremely academically challenging - and as the Leicester admissions Dean put it ‘they get bored and they should be the ones developing new medicines’. A lot of generalisations here of course but yes a LOT rests on ucat and then interview performance - I guess the application process aims to measure individuals in a more rounded way than one day in an exam hall.

cosygingerkitten · 14/08/2025 18:19

Well done to all the students whether they got exactly what they wanted or have survived a day of adjusting expectations.
We followed advice on this thread, especially from @mumsneedwineand my daughter got 4 interviews and 2 offers. Today she got the results she needed for her firm choice Sheffield and is very excited. She is more concerned about friends with disappointments for other subjects and helping them - lovely young people who will end up with a good plan but today is very tough for many so thinking of them all and sending much gratitude and best wishes to @mumsneedwineand all of you on this thread. Hope the students you support are doing ok
