for Newcastle they don't say what their UCAT cut off is for clearing - just the AAA grade and that you have a UCAT from 2023 onwards. Does that mean you can apply via clearing with a lower UCAT if you meet the other criteria?

mumsneedwine · 12/08/2025 15:29

You can apply. But they'll take the highest ones that do for interview.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 12/08/2025 15:30

fair enough. I see they say the form will close as soon as they have the number of applicants they want too

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 12/08/2025 15:31

are any others in clearing now?

mumsneedwine · 12/08/2025 15:35

Not that I've seen - couple with foundation years. St George's not even popped up yet.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 12/08/2025 15:37

DD still fingers crossed for her first choice but she needs to be prepared.

No, it's because many of the students that they have offered places to have missed their grades. Unis got the results last week.

But results are a variable that affects all medical schools, the question still remains why have Newcastle not managed it better?

(It could also be that a lot had them as insurance but met their firm choice grades)

HGC2 · 13/08/2025 07:41

Wishing everyone due results tomorrow the best of luck, the waiting is so hard!

Morning all, just wanted to send all good wishes and vibes to everyone for tomorrow.

And, to add that it’s not the end of the journey if they miss their grades. My DD needed to re-sit her a levels, and then reapplied with grades in hand. She starts at Bristol in 4 weeks, and a year’s work experience has been good for her.

Will be thinking of your young people tomorrow and look forward to reading all the updates!

Thank you. My daughter was a very near miss for IB and will very likely not get an offer tomorrow. Her UCAS has been ‘awaiting a decision’ since the 6th July which has been quite tough. We’ve put everything in place for a resit and new UCAT as we’re not expecting miracles tomorrow.

May I ask what your daughter did on her gap year please? My daughter already has a job and has lined up more work experience and volunteering. I just worry that she’ll feel lovely as all of her friends are going off to uni.

Thefatbutteredpig · 13/08/2025 14:05

Good Luck to all for tomorrow

Sorry, I meant lonely not lovely. She definitely won’t feel lovely! 😂🫣

justjuggling · 13/08/2025 14:58

@JuMcGoo She worked in a local Mental Health Trust. Her role was in administration but she attended multi professional meetings, shadowed psychiatrists and has a really good understanding of the realities and pressures of working in the NHS. She also did project work, engaging with children and young people to support the redesign of resources and communication. She has enjoyed it and will return next summer but for now is ready to get back to education.

She hasn’t considered not achieving the required grades and had no plan B but was impressively resilient when her peers went off to uni. She’s very close to her sister and kept up with 1/2 sports activities so that was enough to mitigate any loneliness.

i will keep my fingers crossed that your DD does get an offer tomorrow. If she doesn’t, she’s likely to be sad, and find it tough to look ahead. But from our experience it’s not the end of the world. My DD got a much higher UCAT 2nd time round and was able to apply to Bristol which was out of reach the first time!!

Thanks so much @justjuggling . We pretty much already have plans with work and volunteering, it’s just she will finally know tomorrow after six weeks of being in limbo. We’ve treated it like she’ll need to take a gap year but a tiny bit of hope in our hearts.

I am also hoping she might come and volunteer at my school once a week to help with interventions in my class.

That’s great news about your daughter’s UCAT. What fantastic resilience and something to use during interviews.

maybemedmum · 13/08/2025 15:29

Wishing everyone the best of luck tomorrow. I hope everyone gets what they need and ends up where they want to be.
@JuMcGoo also crossing fingers it's a good day for your DD. (It's good that she has positive plans in the pipeline for if she needs them too.)

My DD has resat 2 of her A levels this year having missed the grades last year. When we looked at options school were willing to have her back but wanted her to actually attend not be an external candidate and do her own thing. They made the very good point that by having a year that is half gap/ half resits lots of students don’t improve their grades
we negotiated 3 1/2 days in school. She found it tough to start, particularly when she didn’t get an offer till March but took up a new sport outside school with other adults, made some new friends and would visit friends at uni. She also applied for Camp America ( is there now) so she had something to look forward to
one positive was she increased her UCAT by 200
points meaning she had other med schools to apply to
study carefully their entry requirements as lots
don’t consider resits ( bad decision on their part IMO)
but all will be well most got in last year if near miss
but my DD at ABB instead of AAA was too far off and they wouldn’t take her
good luck for tomorrow !!!

sproutsandparsnips · 13/08/2025 22:05

Good luck everyone for tomorrow. It’s so difficult - there’s a reasonable chance DS may miss a grade but I’m really hoping he’d still get in. If he doesn’t, we haven’t considered resits but his insurance - not medicine. He seems reasonably ok with that but is very very anxious and withdrawn about the results. We are all on pins……

cosygingerkitten · 13/08/2025 23:50

Good luck everyone for tomorrow. Thank you for sharing tales of good outcomes from missed grades and gap years - it’s lovely hear.

JuMcGoo · 14/08/2025 08:21

Thank you everyone who was so encouraging to me about my daughter and her near miss. She has been accepted for Medicine at Liverpool (her first choice). We are so made up and relieved after a looooong six week wait.

@JuMcGoo huge congratulations. I thought she'd make it ! 🥂

maybemedmum · 14/08/2025 08:32

Fabulous news, @JuMcGoo!

JuMcGoo · 14/08/2025 08:39

Thank you @mumsneedwine. Honestly, you have been so helpful and made me feel like I had a little sanity left. I won't go into too much detail but honestly my daughter has been through so much the last few years- she really deserved it.

Good luck to everyone. Your DCs are really amazing.

ipredictariot5 · 14/08/2025 08:58

ipredictariot5 · 14/08/2025 08:59
