Will try to add old threads, maybe good for us to give an update of where our DCs are at

Door stop. Keeps your heavy fire door open to meet new people.

Often not allowed (as they keep fire doors open)

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 02/09/2025 07:32

Any tips on things people usually forget to bring? This is our first uni drop-off!

mumsneedwine · 02/09/2025 08:16

@WeCantGoOverIt no one cares. First few days having the door open means people will say hello

Yes, don’t get stressed about forgetting something - there are shops and internet deliveries at university! The main thing not to forget (other than bedding and clothes) is something familiar from home, be it a worn out teddy, familiar bedding or printed out photos to put on the pin board (take map or drawing pins). It is all very well trying ‘new place, new me’ but when you have used all your energy trying to make new friends and your room is your sanctuary, you need something familiar around you.

mumsneedwine · 02/09/2025 08:27

Def a teddy or something to cuddle at 2am. Although they may find an alternative for this in freshers week 😇.

mumsneedwine · 02/09/2025 08:39

PS my DD found her 'teddy' in week 1 and is still cuddling him 8 years later. He's v lovely.

HGC2 · 02/09/2025 10:30

Good luck to all our young people, it has been a journey and I wish them all every success for what lies ahead!

DD staying at home this year as its just a short train ride for her so maybe a gentler start for us although I expect she'll be out next year.

Good luck!

And….We’re off!

We waved goodbye just now. A few medic things on this week but starting lectures in earnest next week.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 07/09/2025 17:14

Wow @WeCantGoOverIt well done! What an achievement. Are they nervous?

More excited I think. They were really ready for the next step. Room is nice though could do with some personalisation. It is a bit of a walk to lectures so we may see them again soon to collect their bike.

That's great! Where have they gone? (can't remember and PC doesn't let me scroll back over previous posts easily!)

And just like that the next adventure begins - DD dropped off today ready to start on Monday - I messaged my uni flatmate to say how old it made me feel - It really doesn’t feel like 30 years since my own first week of uni 😩

justjuggling · 14/09/2025 10:11

Dropped mine off yesterday too. Doesn’t seem real that she’s actually there now and ready to start. Hoping she makes some nice friends quickly!

maybemedmum · 14/09/2025 11:20

Exciting to hear of all the drop-offs. Hope the first weeks go well and they find their feet and their friends.

DD doesn't go for another three weeks - she's climbing the walls a bit! (But passed her driving test and is getting trained up for a new job as bank staff in a care home, so she has some stuff to keep her busy.)

ipredictariot5 · 15/09/2025 14:55

I took my DS to Glasgow this weekend and DD goes this weekend. Two freshers to worry about! DD less so, she’s a year older for resits and will be so busy with med school timetable
double whammy empty nest

mumsneedwine · 15/09/2025 15:14

They are going to have so much fun. Work hard, play hard. So many opportunities coming their way 😊. Congratulations to everyone 🥂

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 15/09/2025 16:08

DD dropped off, from sixth form they suddenly grow up and are proper adults out in the world.

Any advice on helping her learn how to budget?

Lurea · 15/09/2025 18:02

I took my DD to Newcastle yesterday. It was sad leaving her but I am so happy she managed to achieve what she wanted. Let’s hope she will find nice friends!

Niceday203 · 15/09/2025 18:33

Yes, wonderful to see them off on their journey but a bittersweet experience.

well done all and much good luck to your young people.

Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me what vaccinations medical school students have to have? I believe Hep B is one, do they need a BCG too? Anything else? (assuming they are up to date with all their childhood immunisations).

Hi, the occupational health dept for individual medical schools will check on arrival against their own requirements but in general they will check the student has had all childhood vaccines. Typically:
MMR: If the student has never received MMR they will give it.
Hepatitis B: They will give a course of vaccines for hepatitis B (only recently introduced for UK babies so most UK students will need it).
chickenpox: They will check if the student has had chicken pox or the vaccine and may do a blood test to check antibodies. If no immunity to chickenpox they will give the vaccine.
BCG: not usually given now
They will also do a blood test to demonstrate the student does not have active hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HIV.

Morning all, thought I’d check in to see how our young people are settling in.
DD is definitely feeling the pressure compared to friends doing other degrees but she’s settled in well and is enjoying the social side of things and not regretting her choice so far!
how is everyone getting on?

Optimum19 · 25/10/2025 13:54

Mine is loving every minute. Definitely very full on, but fun too. Worth all the stress in getting there.
Hope it continues that way for her & hope your own DC are enjoying it too.

justjuggling · 25/10/2025 14:41

Mine came home for the first time yesterday. So lovely to see her!! Seems to be settling well, really enjoying the course and is making friends, although, not in her flat which seems very unsocial. Has joined some societies and enjoying meeting different people via the course. I still can’t quite believe she’s there and all the effort paid off!

maybemedmum · 26/10/2025 08:00

Nice to hear updates about how they are all doing.
DD also settling in well and enjoying herself. Seems to have a nice group of friends and getting involved in lots of sports and some MedSoc stuff.
We are on a half-term open day/visit the uni kids in the family tour with my younger kids so will see her next week which I'm looking forward to!
