@SoTiredNeedHoliday does depend on the Uni. But just still have long hours the after year 1 & 2 (& many 3 as well). So 3 months off to travel/work/sleep.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 02/01/2025 14:23

thank you all that is super helpful advice

DD (currently 2nd year) had/has long holidays in 1st and 2nd year (just a 31 week year), then from Yr 3 onwards, the year is 46 weeks so only 2 weeks off at each of Christmas / Easter / Summer.

She went travelling for 7or 8 weeks at the end of 1st year, and she plans to do something similar at the end of 2nd year. So far, the exams for her are at the end of term (Christmas and Easter, then obviously at the end of the year) so she hasn't had to revise in the holidays (you would if you have resits in late August) so she has had breaks.

Just to say, don't forget that once Yr 13 is done, they will have 3-4 months "off" before starting 1st year even if you don't defer.

Yes, hang on to that if you feel wrung out with academic work atm. A number of the students at school/ friends of my own DC have regretted their decision to take a gap year: it tots up to fifteen months off which can be far too long not to drag, even with travel put into the mix after working to pay for that travel. So many of their school peers do go straight to uni that a lot say they feel a bit lonely during the working-to-pay-for-travel months and wish they hadn't deferred.

Happy New Year to you all - hoping it's a year that sees our kids achieve their ambition of medical school.
On our way to Leeds for DD's interview (requires an overnight stay for us and I grew up in Leeds so taking the opportunity for a trip down memory lane). DD has been quite downbeat about it all for the last couple of days - hoping she can find her purpose and excitement again. It's such a long haul...

Slightly off topic, but for those with children already in med school or post med school, what are the holidays like for medical students?

DD is contemplating where to request a gap year or not. She feels if she doesn't she won't get a break and be constantly working.

Just wondering if the students do get holidays where they can actually take break or is it full on pretty much all the time? Constant revision in breaks etc

Think it really varies. It was one of the things dd considered and they all seemed to have different approaches. Probably worth asking at offer days. Sheffield particularly had few holidays after the Easter of yr2. Exeter has short (2 week) Christmas and Easter holidays throughout but fairly long summer holidays.

Hope the weather doesn’t hamper your experience of Leeds.🤞

Hope the Leeds interview went well @maybemedmum. We're heading in the morning. Hope the flight is on time & all goes smoothly.

Hope the interview went well and your journey was smooth. All the very best wishes for a successful outcome

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 07/01/2025 07:37

Goodluck to all the DD & DS's this is a tough couple of months with mocks and interviews (hopefully)!!!

maybemedmum · 07/01/2025 07:47

@Optimum19 wishing you best of luck with the journey and the interview.
We've loved Leeds, just hoping they love DD too!

CopingHagen · 08/01/2025 08:19

Leeds here this week too. Good luck everyone.

Does anyone know roughly how long Leeds tend to take before they start communicating offers/rejections? I think (but may have got the wrong end of the stick) that they do the majority of interviews in one "go".

Optimum19 · 08/01/2025 08:51

Hi @CopingHagen - Leeds day was long & busy. Don't be there too early or you'll be waiting about a long time. Yeah they said they're aiming to get all decisions made by 14/2 & some by the end of this month. Think majority of interviews finish today. Best of luck to your DC. Mine was happy enough; think she had something to say at all stations, but whether any of it was what they're looking for, who knows?

CopingHagen · 08/01/2025 10:28

Thanks Optimum19 Smile

maybemedmum · 08/01/2025 12:05

Hope it goes well today @CopingHagen. It's definitely a long and busy day - DD got out quite a bit later than expected and it was a rush for the train. Got a week at home now before the next trip (though I'm not going on that one).
DD and I were both pleased to see so much snow in Leeds - we don't get much of it at all where we live - but I think it had made the logistics all a bit trickier for the organisers.

Niceday203 · 08/01/2025 14:51

can anyone advise on how long from start time the Leeds interview went on for? Trying to figure out collection times etc

maybemedmum · 08/01/2025 14:54

DD was finished about 2.5 hours after the start time. There was a talk which parents could attend if they wished for about the last half hour of that.

Niceday203 · 08/01/2025 15:13

Thank you just got the text now!

fiftiesmum · 08/01/2025 16:39

The other break they may get is in the final year. Exams are often around march followed by the elective so if they pass they could do eight weeks abroad then a few weeks travelling in that country and the a few more weeks before fy1 starts in late July/August.
DD also had some time out post fy2 - took a nine month contract which could be extended did the interviews in the January to start next stage in the August and had the spring to relax and do a bit of travelling.

Justlikingit · 10/01/2025 13:30

Hello all, I’m sure lots in mocks season, something to keep the DC distracted ( not so much us).
Still no word from Liverpool! Does anyone know if they have a typical historic time of response?

Optimum19 · 10/01/2025 13:37

Someone just put on the Liverpool tsr page that they got interview with UCAT score 2620- not sure if true or not?

Optimum19 · 10/01/2025 14:01

DD just messaged to say she got Liverpool interview
