Offers for 2025

ontheturn · 04/11/2024 16:15

I noticed that in 2024 there was an offers thread where people shared when their children. had submitted to ucas and what offers they had received. Anyone interested? We have offers for Manchester, Bristol and Leeds all within ten days of submitting ucas but still waiting on Edinburgh. We do know others who submitted at the same time who have had Edinburgh offers already.

And just to add, I'm zoning in on the maths offers on this thread but a huge well done for all the DC getting offers. And hoping those of us still waiting don't have to wait too much longer.

DS has just received his final offer.
Durham MEng AAB, really surprised as he thought it'd be a no so he'd sort of settled on Newcastle or an apprenticeship.
Lots to think about now...

Is that the standard offer for MEng? It's lower than most universities!

MarchingFrogs · 11/02/2025 07:43

Looking at the 'Entry Requirements' (rather than 'Typical Offer') for the various MEng courses on the Durham website, AAB to include <specific subject / grade> is the usual contextual offer.

It's contextual, I think because of our postcode (even though our home is a listed building in a pretty conservation area)
I think DS just stuck it on his UCAS to fill up space tbh, his predicted grades are AAB so he wasn't really expecting an offer

Finally DC got an offer from bath for AF.

Ds has his maths offer from Warwick today, still not received his TMUA score, but I suppose universities already have it. That is all his offers in, he wants to firm Warwick, and insurance will possibly be Bath. Now he just has to get the grades!

Congrats to your DS! We're still waiting. Wish we knew what order they do things in, it seems completely random.

LexieB · 11/02/2025 19:20

🤞🤞🤞 My daughter just received an offer for Psychology with Behavioural Science from Durham AAA 🥴 she is so happy

Changes17 · 11/02/2025 19:24

Congrats to all with offers! Very exciting times

Congratulations, is she going to an offer holder day? DS has booked his for April because it's the only one that doesn't clash with something else.

LexieB · 11/02/2025 19:58

Do they send you an email about it? or do you just book it on the website? she looked around it before on her own with a friend previously. i would really like to go and visit it with her

MillicentFaucet · 11/02/2025 20:08

DS received the invitation to book this morning followed by 2 more emails with the user name & pin straight after. So she should check again tomorrow.
Dates are 19 Feb, 24 Mar & 26 April.
College visits in the morning then subject activity in the pm
I'm local & used to work at the university so let me know if you want any info

MotherOfCatBoy · 11/02/2025 20:51

What does this mean? DS had a response from Bristol for Aero Engineering that said they won’t offer for that but they’d encourage him to apply instead for Mechanical/ Civil/ Engineering Mathematics. It said his application “did not rank as high as others.”

His predicted grades are four A stars and he already has one as he sat Maths A level at end of year 12.

What gives? Have they filled up their Aero course early and got no more places to offer?

NCTDN · 11/02/2025 21:15

Replied in the other thread, but wondering is the fact that maths is one year ago that might be a negative. Lots of the science degrees don't want people to defer. Maybe his maths isn't considered to be as fresh as others? Just a thought. Ridiculous I know.

MotherOfCatBoy · 12/02/2025 07:09

Hi @NCTDN cant be that, he took Maths as part of the normal course of 6th form, as he’s taking Further Maths this year. So Maths in lower sixth, Further Maths in upper sixth with his other two A levels - will be 4 in total. No deferrals.
Saw your reply on the other thread as well, thanks for that.

WombatChocolate · 12/02/2025 09:05

Re Durham Offer Holder Days, the one next week is only term time one. So if you want to see Durham bustling with students it’s the one to go for….assume by they still have places and people have received offers, which clearly not everyone has yet.

WombatChocolate · 12/02/2025 09:10

Re Bristol not offering with 4 A star predictions, the reality is for small very popular courses, sometimes they can’t offer to all candidates with 4 A star. It also happens with Econ and Computer Science courses at places like LSE/Imperial/Durham.

I agree it’s so frustrating. If they also have excellent GCSEs and personal statement, it does feel random about who gets the offer and who doesn’t and there might well be some luck in terms of when your application is looked at. It’s that or the possibility that GCSEs or Personal Statement were in reality not as good as others: it can be fine margins.
But did Bristol not make an alternative offer? Lots of places do. It doesn’t really help to simply suggest applying for something else when the application has already gone in with 5 places listed.

MotherOfCatBoy · 12/02/2025 13:16

I see what you’re saying Wombat. He has 10 GCSEs and in old money 7 or 8 of those were As (8s and 9s now), with 9s in Maths and Physics. The Bs were RE and English I think. So not all 9s but very good. Personal Statement - it’s so hard to tell. He is well rounded, plays 3 instruments to grade 7 level, did his DOE Gold, sings in two choirs… maybe they are looking for one track engineering experience but that is hard to get at 16/17 whilst working towards 4 A levels.

I don’t know. He only applied to 3 - we are waiting to hear from Imperial. This has spooked him. He may end up with just one offer from Southampton, which seems crazy for a 4 A star student.

My DD is super excited to have firmed with Southampton. She absolutely loved it (and we visited 10 unis). Perhaps they will end up in the same uni choir?!

Stockpot · 12/02/2025 13:39

@MotherOfCatBoy Congratulations to your DS! Southampton is very highly regarded for engineering.

DD applied to Bristol for Mechanical Engineering and hasn’t heard back yet. She is predicted 4A*s. Her GCSEs were seven 9s, three 8s and an A in addmaths. She plays sport at a high level and got her silver DoE.

I advised her not to apply to Bristol. They have form for being erratic in admissions. You only get 5 choices, so I thought it was a bad bet. But, she loved the buildings and the city. 🤷🏻‍♀️

She has been offered a place at Cambridge, so if she makes her grades it won’t matter.

I have no idea what Bristol’s decision process is. I have experience through friends, family and neighbours of children from state and private, good and bad postcodes, etc. i cannot discern a pattern.

Umbilicat · 12/02/2025 15:17

Bristol told my dc they offer first on straight As, then if it's a tie they go to GCSEs so possibly they had enough straight 9 students there to fill the places. Possibly also your ds stressed his music grades, D of E too much in the personal statement and didn't waffle on about his "passion" for engineering enough? It is really tough, my dc1's great friend only got one offer when she applied a few years ago to high-calibre universities, despite perfect A-level predictions and then post A-level with two A stars and an A only got three offers. BUT she is incredibly happy at the uni where she ended up and agree Southampton is great for engineering, I know a few kids studying it there, it's an excellent course.

Umbilicat · 12/02/2025 17:26

DC just got a UCL offer, don't want to say the subject as very outing, but just so people know UCL is coming through ... it's the same as their Oxford offer but they will prob use it to insure in the hopes if they did drop one grade UCL might take them - everywhere else has offered higher than Oxford so not really viable.

FiveFoxes · 12/02/2025 18:00

To reassure you, DS is also still On Hold with Bristol and has 4 A*s predicted. He's waiting for Maths & Stats.

MotherOfCatBoy · 12/02/2025 18:23

Thanks all for your kind replies re Bristol. I’ve calmed down a bit now! And so has he, he would be happy to go to Southampton, he was offered A star AA: he already has the A Star to two As to get this summer. A friend’s daughter is at Southampton (different course, PPE) and loves it so all signs are good for that.

RayonSunrise · 12/02/2025 19:18

DD's final offer for Durham Liberal Arts came in today, A*AA. She is relieved, and now she can book her offer holder day. She has SO many questions now...

Ds loved Southampton and I think if it were closer it would be his top choice for aerospace. It's still in the running but offer holder days will hopefully help him decide.
I'm amazed at how popular the course is!
