Accommodation at Nottingham Uni

DD got a place through clearing last Thursday. They guarantee an offer of accommodation. She put an application in immediately and then dashed off for a fortnight's holiday!

Not heard anything yet. Anyone have any knowledge of accommodation at Nottingham?

What were her choices? Catered or self catering?

Thanks for replies.

She's chosen non catered halls. Preferably the cheapest available!

You only get a few days to accept an accomodation offer sent by email or you will lose it. Is your daughter checking her emails while on holiday ?

Hiya, I'm from Nottingham and also a current student at uni of.
On-site halls crap, expensive, so loud, omg always having construction on them. I remember in first year, they kicked an entire halls of students out and told them to find somewhere else to stay, even though they had already paid for their halls, because the uni wanted to do construction on the halls. This was not preplanned. I knew some people who ended up sleeping on the floor of their friends dorms because of this. Aside from the unis own accommodation, unite students is pretty big in Nottingham, expensive but an ok stay over all, however do not stay at St Peter's court, there has been multiple stabbings and "firework parties" there, people shooting fireworks at each other.
The student area of lenton is a really crap hole, stinks, always construction again, such bad traffic. It's on derby road across from queens medical centre hospital, such a nightmare to get around.

But overall, outside of accommodation the uni is fantastic, very supportive, fun, absolutely gorgeous, wonderful staff, amazing facilities and there are so many societies and opportunities to meet people and have a great time.

Your DD will love it I'm sure.

She has graciously given us access to her emails so we can check whilst she's on holiday!

Dd is at Nottingham - about to go into 3rd year - and loves it. She was in catered halls for her first year and felt it was a huge waste of money, food was awful and often inedible and she wished she’d gone for cheap self catering instead so sounds like you’re onto a winner there! Good luck.

ErnestMilton · 23/08/2023 21:23

@rolo84 - she ditched her firm in favour of Nottm in clearing as she's so keen to go there!

The campus is beautiful, isn't it?

Bit worried about your comments about the accommodation!

I had a friend there with the same experience, she ended up quite sick because she couldn't eat the food in the catered halls. It's all kind of junk and really crappy and greasy.

It really is a great uni, the halls just aren't great is all. I guess they've all got their down sides. Would highly recommend she gets some ear plugs or something.

I really hope she enjoys her time there, I'm about to enter my third year so if you've got any questions about anything else to do with UoN just let me know!

All the on-campus accommodation at Nottingham is catered which personally I think is not great as it excludes poorer students. You want to be on campus at a place like Nottingham and if the halls cost £££ then that's not great. That said, I gather that the SC halls a short walk away are nice. And there are good options for living out inc Beeston.

stoneysongs · 24/08/2023 01:01

Self-catered halls (Broadgate Park) are literally across the road from campus and are closer to some departments than many of the on-campus catered halls. I think humanities is the big one at that end. So no worries there. It's a sort of student village with about 40 blocks and various room options from standard single with shared bathroom to en-suites and studios. There's a 24hr reception, laundry, communal study and hang out spaces, Amazon lockers etc.

If she has gone for one of the cheapest she might be in a flat like DS had last year. He had a great time, although his dept was at the opposite end of campus, ~25 mins walk. He is about to move into a house over on that side, but has also switched courses to a dept at the Broadgate end, so still a 25 min walk away 🤦‍♀️

Yep exactly this.

Hi, try registering her on the student accommodation portal. We are in the same position and my son applied for SC through the clearing form on results day (firm and insurance apply through the portal). We still haven't heard anything but he checked the portal yesterday and it had been updated to say he had been referred to Student Roost Nottingham Two for his room allocation. I contacted them and it can take 4 or 5 days for them to process but the rooms are reserved. That was for mid range SC ensuite so I don't know where the cheaper ones are - well it's Broadgate but that looked almost sold out before results day. Anyway, in summary, we haven't heard from the uni but the portal told us where he was being placed. It's in the student quarter by Deakins and St Peters which I was quite happy with until I read this thread! Oh well, he really didn't want catered and there aren't many options out there.

Africa2go · 24/08/2023 08:48

My DD heard yesterday - catered on campus - had to reply by 30 Aug.

ErnestMilton · 24/08/2023 13:45

I've just texted DD to ask if she registered on the portal to which she replied "think so" 🙄

Day off tomorrow, so I'll see if I can find anything out.

DS self catered several years ago at Raleigh Park and stayed there for all 3 years so I suppose it can't have been too bad. He cycled to the main campus and walked in and back (briskly!) to Nottingham city centre.

Fourcandlesx · 24/08/2023 20:54

I actually went through all the accommodation on the website just before results day to see what was left as Nottingham is first come first served and they update it as it gets booked. Based on your criteria there is a good chance she could get Raleigh Park actually. There are still rooms available at Nottingham Two as an alternative but pretty much all the SC next to campus was booked up straight away. My son finally got his email today so hopefully she will hear anytime now.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 25/08/2023 09:30

Hope you get it sorted today. My DS is starting this year and is staying at Broadgate.

When we went for the Offer Holders Open day they weee advertising discounts for second years staying there so they must have enough accommodation.

Like a PP said though, DS's department is at the other end of the campus so he'll have to walk or cycle.

ErnestMilton · 25/08/2023 16:08

Oh my god! They've offered her Sherwood Hall. It's catered - she'll starve. It's over £8k - we'll bloody starve if we have to pay that.

That would be unrealistic for us. Can she call them and see if they'll offer a cheaper option?

Not open til 9.30 on Tuesday.

I am on a very lovely thread, GCSE's, then A'levels, not thye are mostly at Uni, just finished year 1. 6 of us at Nottingham. 4 of us in Rutland. ds1's original choices were :

  1. Rutland
  2. Sherwood
  3. Riverside
  4. Raleigh

He wanted Rutland badly. Got it. I too was thrilled. He has been very happy in Rutland. 3 of the others weren't keen on the food, but my ds1 loved it. He is the most unfussy kid ever food wise though and eats everything. He does like and miss my cooking though and says its a bit like permanent school dinners.

Which one does she want? Albion house is £130.50 p/w. Is that one of the cheapest. Plus it has quieter, would that suit dd?

C1N1C · 25/08/2023 19:46

Rent a room in Beeston. You'll thank me :)

Oblomov23 · 25/08/2023 19:49

On Tuesday, first thing, go on portal, ring them, aswell. Hopefully you can change easily.
