Bath University Accommodation

Hello, I’m not sure if it’s already being discussed somewhere, sorry if it is. DC has been accepted to Bath Uni (as a first choice) and we’re waiting for an accommodation email. Anyone has already received theirs? It’s our first experience with university application/life. Not sure how long the wait is and we’re getting a bit nervous. Should DC contact them? Or just wait patiently? Thanks for help.

Thanks @LightandAiry thats what I would have thought, oh well we’ll soon find out I suppose.

Hope everyone’s DC have come to terms with their accommodation now if they weren’t too happy.

Anyone else still waiting like my DC?

LightandAiry · 02/09/2023 16:29

@OscarMikeGolf I hope you hear soon 🤞 let us know

It seems loads of people are not happy with their allocated rooms on The Student Room, lots asking if anyone wants to swap - are they allowed to do that? Surely they have to go through Bath's accommodation department officially or they wouldn't know where anyone was and it would be a right old mess?

Can confirm as someone who used to work in accommodation at Bath that this is not allowed and anyone who does this will have consequences.

That's what I'd have thought.
There's one particular student over on TSR who is apoplectic with rage about his allocation. Has now resorted to insulting anyone and everyone who tries to calm him down and tell him everyone has a brilliant time anyway.

It was quite amusing to read on Thursday but crossed a line now with his mouthing off! I pity who is answering the phone to him tomorrow!

(And thank you for your hard work!)

incywincyspiders · 03/09/2023 20:36

@SoIinvictus I just went to have a nosey over there. A lot of things stated in that thread about how allocations are made are complete rubbish 😂 the team do really work hard - I don't work there anymore (and actually never worked in the allocations team) but it's like a military operation. No need to thank me - but happy to answer any questions anyone has (I don't work in accommodation anymore but still work at the uni)

@incywincyspiders just spotted that you used to work in accomodation at Bath. Do you know anything about the studio rooms at Green Park? Trying to establish if they also get access to a large kitchen or just the microwave and small hob in the room

I'm sorry, I'm not sure as the uni took on Green Park after I left (it's only been UoB for a year - prior to this it was Bath Spa accommodation). What I can say is I know most students who were allocated Green Park were really happy with the accommodation - definitely the best city accommodation (along with Thornbank Gardens and Pulteney Court but even they are getting a bit tatty now)

@incywincyspiders can I ask a couple of questions too please?

DS has been allocated Osborne House…

Is there a laundrette there? I’m getting conflicting information..

Can I arrange for Asda home deliveries to OH?

Roughly how big are the mail boxes? If I was to send a parcel, would it go to OH, or would he need to collect from the mail room?

Thank you

LightandAiry · 04/09/2023 08:30

@Solinvictus this is a lesson in life for that soon to be student - he's probably always got what he wanted, and it's a shock to the system.

My DD is brazening it out and says she's OK with it. Once she is settled and cozy with her fairy lights up she'll be OK, but hopefully she'll be out and about enjoying herself. She has worked very hard for these A Levels and hardly been out at all.

@incywincyspiders I am relieved she has something cheaper than Quads, but do you know if Westwood has any space for them to eat and I've heard the indoor space for socialising is small?

TJsAunt · 04/09/2023 10:58

ds has been allocated literally the most expensive accommodation - and not even on campus!!

he firmed Bath and met his offer conditions. Applied on time for accommodation too so he's a bit down.

Not sure what that can mean for people who had Bath as an insurance or got in through clearing as it seems like most things have already been allocated......

TJsAunt · 04/09/2023 10:59

Also not sure i believe the claims on here that the whole accommodation process is like a military operation?

Lots of people complaining about being allocated Quads as it was their 5th choice etc... It was ds's first choice so how on earth has that happened??

My claim which is based on experience - however my experience is from previous years so I can't speak to this years. I don't think the process has changed but I do know that the staff member who was in charge of allocations has recently left - maybe this has affected the efficiency of how/when students have been told but it shouldn't have affected the process itself.

Of course 😊

My knowledge is a bit rusty as it's been a while.

I can't remember off the top of my head if Osborne has a laundry room in the actual building but all students will have access to laundry facilities (sorry this isn't that helpful but I will try and find the correct answer out for you and reply back when I know!)

The mailboxes aren't huge but if a student gets a parcel they will receive an email and they can go and pick it up from the university parcel room 😊

And yes you can get Asda/any deliveries to campus!

LightandAiry · 04/09/2023 12:15

@TJsAunt Quads was dd's first choice too, got her 5th. Seems odd I agree.

incywincyspiders · 04/09/2023 12:16

Also just for anyone who is in city accommodation - parcel deliveries in the city will go to the city parcel room which I believe now is in Green Park House (it used to be in Virgil Building but I think that has changed).

It will depend which flat she is in! The horizontal ones are better for dining space than the vertical ones (as I think someone said before on this thread). But none are too bad in my opinion 😊

Also Westwood rooms don't look great but I met so many students who were really happy there and said they found it a lot more sociable in general!

Is this Green Park House?

If so - while the financial side isn't great, I have heard that a lot of students LOVED GPH last year. And there are so many perks to being in the city. Bath is such a small place that it only takes 15 minutes to get up to campus so you aren't that far away either :)

LightandAiry · 04/09/2023 12:28

@incywincyspiders thank you, I believe she is in a vertical one. I am assuming she won't be far away from the kitchen & can eat in her room. We're off shopping in a bit we will have to remember a tray!

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 04/09/2023 12:30

Thank you @incywincyspiders

LightandAiry · 04/09/2023 12:32

@incywincyspiders I agree they don't look great. She's saying they're looking like a prison block but she'll make friends.

@TJsAunt Quads was dd's first choice too, got her 5th. Seems odd I agree.

Mine had Quads as first and results in hand by the beginning of July as we are in Italy and was one of the last to be allocated on the 9/9 (Eastwood Terrace)

At the end of the day, very few are unhappy where they end up in dd's experience. They can all be a bit wtf when they see what looks like a basic room and living space but they make it their own and have such a fantastic time at a fantastic university in a fantastic city that sharing a bathroom fades into the "not that bad at all" memory box.

incywincyspiders · 04/09/2023 13:16

Again - I'm not sure if the system has changed (I don't think it has though!) but as long as you complete your preferences before the deadline when you submit as has no bearing. It's not first come first served / early bird catches the worm situation.

incywincyspiders · 04/09/2023 13:24

LightandAiry · 04/09/2023 12:32

@incywincyspiders I agree they don't look great. She's saying they're looking like a prison block but she'll make friends.

LOVELY location though - backs onto the Golf course with the circular path around the campus just behind. If you think Westwood looks like a prison, check out Clevelands Building on Street View (which I think is PGT exclusive if it hasn't changed!)

Honestly, my least favourite of the accommodation was Marlborough and Solsbury - which was the most sought after along with Quads. My favourite was Pulteney Court and Thornbank Gardens (which at the time is mostly for Post Grads!)

fortyfifty · 04/09/2023 13:39

LightandAiry · 04/09/2023 12:28

@incywincyspiders thank you, I believe she is in a vertical one. I am assuming she won't be far away from the kitchen & can eat in her room. We're off shopping in a bit we will have to remember a tray!

There is a table to eat at in both kitchens. If vertical, typically 10 are allocated the downstairs kitchen and 6 or 7 the upstairs kitchen as that on is smaller. There's enough seating that they can socialise and can play games around the table - it's just that each kitchen is not big enough to take all 17 students. My DD didn't eat in her room. Cooking and eating together is the best way to get to know people. Eventually she did eat in her room, sometimes, if she was watching something at the same time.

There's no additional sitting space like in other flats but sometimes it's a good thing not to have space to host a huge party 😉 They all pile into Quads flats for that.

There's a flat and room 360 tour available on the website of Bath uni. It's the corridors which make these old accommodations look prison-like. The rooms and kitchens are fine once lived in. My dd's second year private accommodation off campus was much worse in the end!
