Bath University Accommodation

Hello, I’m not sure if it’s already being discussed somewhere, sorry if it is. DC has been accepted to Bath Uni (as a first choice) and we’re waiting for an accommodation email. Anyone has already received theirs? It’s our first experience with university application/life. Not sure how long the wait is and we’re getting a bit nervous. Should DC contact them? Or just wait patiently? Thanks for help.

Again - I'm not sure if the system has changed (I don't think it has though!) but as long as you complete your preferences before the deadline when you submit as has no bearing. It's not first come first served / early bird catches the worm situation.

Oh yes, I know. It's just that lots of people (especially over on Wiwi and TSR) keep going on about "internationals" getting what they want because they get results early.

I have nothing but praise for the accommodation team (don't know if you heard about the electricity outage in January that went on for 10 days- but despite the frustration, the accommodation services people were great.

Hello. has anyone been able to book a moving in time slot yet for Bath Uni accommodation? My DS has Friday 22nd as the moving in day and I need to book time off work. My DS doesn’t know when or how to book a time slot. Thanks

SoIinvictus · 04/09/2023 15:36

Are you sure there is a slot? Last year DD just had "Sunday morning" no particular slot as such.

LightandAiry · 04/09/2023 15:44

My DD says she's waiting for an email to book a slot.

Boymum71 · 04/09/2023 15:55

I’ve just checked the Bath accommodation website and eventually found where it says there will be an email to book a time slot. Didn’t say when to expect it though so will get my DS to keep checking.

SoIinvictus · 04/09/2023 16:09

Oh ok, that's different from last year.
Good luck!

Fingerscrossed23 · 05/09/2023 13:50

Hi, DD has Bath as insurance. Just been offered a Westwood Green shared room which looks tiny. Are they camp beds there? Thinking of deferring but after a previous comment she might not get her own room/ a room on campus next year anyway. She is doing science and hockey so needs to be close by. Anyone else in the same position please or who has previously deferred?

Fingerscrossed23 · 05/09/2023 14:10

Hi @OscarMikeGolf put this on the wrong thread! She has now been offered a tiny shared room in Westwood Green which is on campus but tiny and not keen on sharing. Beds look a bit like camp beds. Waiting to see if she is offered anything else and then will probably defer tomorrow as the deferral deadline is Thurs 7th. She can defer but not sure campus is guaranteed next year either!

TJsAunt · 05/09/2023 14:13

think anyone who defers gets first pick? at least someone we know who deferred did.

OscarMikeGolf · 05/09/2023 14:16

Urgh a shared room would be my worst nightmare. Did she have to accept the shared room or did they say she can have it if nothing else is available? I supposed it wouldn’t be so bad if it was temporary.

LozengeShaped · 05/09/2023 14:20

If your DD is not keen to defer, she could contact the accommodation people, and ask them to pass on her phone number to her roommate, so she can speak to her first to see if they get on ok.

Fingerscrossed23 · 05/09/2023 14:33

Just looking at the message-we may be able to offer you temporary shared accommodation to ensure you can join uni whilst we explore suitable permanent options..if you decline the initial offer we cannot guarantee another due to high demand... Nightmare! Thank you LozengeShaped for that idea. Almost sure she will defer now. However have just seen that one student with Bath as firm has not been given a room on campus!😩

Fingerscrossed23 · 05/09/2023 15:07

Actually she has since been told the shared room is permanent.

OscarMikeGolf · 05/09/2023 15:17

Gosh, just had a look at the shared rooms - they are indeed tiny 😲

Still waiting here.

LightandAiry · 05/09/2023 16:58

@OscarMikeGolf I read somewhere that the next batch of offers will be out on Thursday🤞for your DS.

OscarMikeGolf · 06/09/2023 13:36

Well my DS has heard and they’re saying they have no accommodation left 😡
Anyone else in the same boat?

TJsAunt · 06/09/2023 13:55

That's awful OMG - not even temporary accommodation?

OscarMikeGolf · 06/09/2023 14:09

No nothing, they say it’s due to ‘higher-than-expected number of students who have confirmed their place’ but that doesn’t make sense as they were advertising so many clearing spaces. It’s just about getting as much money from the students and to hell with their well being, I’m really annoyed.

So my DS has 2 weeks to find accommodation in Bath at this time of year, wish us luck…

SoIinvictus · 06/09/2023 14:09

Oh no @OscarMikeGolf I've seen messages on WIWI this morning from another couple of people whose kids have also been told there's nothing.

LightandAiry · 06/09/2023 17:02

Oh no that's awful @OscarMikeGolf what on earth are they doing....

Xeno10 · 07/09/2023 08:25

I am sorry to say but our experience with the Bath Accommodation team hasn't been a good one, having had unanswered emails, unreturned calls and when I have spoken to them, they have am arrogant attitude - Take it or leave it! My daughter after selecting 7 accommodation preferences, as requested by the Uni, wasn't given any of them. She is a first year student, and has been placed in Student accommodation 30 mins from the Uni and is sharing a fat with 6 Guys. Having explained to the Accom team this isn't heathy, they just didn't care, we are desperately trying to find private Accom before the term stars. She is also a County ladies Rugby player and the Accom location precludes her from taking part in the ladies rugby training (730am) as she cat get back showered and to lecturers, the ladies Bath rugby team was one of the reasons she wanted to go to Bath Uni. Having looked at the internet, seems the Bath Accom team did this same to students last year. Makes me wonder if they even consider students criteria.

OscarMikeGolf · 07/09/2023 08:39

That’s dreadful @Xeno10, It seems a right old mess all round.

I'm really sorry you have found the team to be unresponsive and rude - that's unprofessional and they should be providing a more friendly service.

I will say though - their attitude will be take it or leave it because the accommodation is so oversubscribed - which ultimately is the university's fault for accepting more students than it can cater for. Medical requirements are definitely taken into consideration but I'm not sure sport commitments are (I can't remember if I'm honest and this could have changed anyway). Also as Bath has a big sporting cohort practically every student has some kind of sport commitment. I'm not saying that it's adequate though, unfortunately that's just how it is :(

Xeno10 · 07/09/2023 09:25

Your reply implies you are in some way connected with the Bath Uni Accom team?

I noticed you didnt comment to the fact you have placed an 18yo girl in a flat with so many boys, ages are unknown so I will call them boys, all sharing the same bathroom and it being unhealthy! How do you think my daughter feels about that!!!!!

I appreciate "Medical requirements are definitely taken into consideration" but seems the safety/feelings of a lone female student away from home for the first time, isnt a risk Bath Uni considers important enough to even make sure the ratio of sexes is proportionate. Seems as long as there is a body in a room nothing else matters and you feel you have done your job. Fulfilling your "disabled" requirements is a legal obligation which is why I suspect you have more rigor around it.

TJsAunt · 07/09/2023 09:32

yeah our experience with the accommodation service has been awful. DS has somehow been placed in the most expensive off campus accommodation and there is no empathy for the fact he now has to find an extra £2k plus bus fare in his first year. No explanation, just a 'computer says no' attitude.

He is aware that he is better off than some, but the whole thing has been a mess - Bath have just got greedy and accepted too many freshers.
