Bath University Accommodation

Hello, I’m not sure if it’s already being discussed somewhere, sorry if it is. DC has been accepted to Bath Uni (as a first choice) and we’re waiting for an accommodation email. Anyone has already received theirs? It’s our first experience with university application/life. Not sure how long the wait is and we’re getting a bit nervous. Should DC contact them? Or just wait patiently? Thanks for help.

does anyone know if students can be on campus for years 2 and 3? Or is it just 1? Thinking of those who are in the supported accommodations for additional support?

Nope. Unfortunately not. They can only guarantee accommodation for first years, and only for first years who've firmed.
The Oldfield Park area is basically Bath uni campus for second years onwards. Lots of availability too, whereas last year there were lots of news stories about Durham and Exeter students queuing round the block to get into estate agents from about November onwards.
It's still a LOT better than many other cities. I had nothing to do with dd's choices of university but I keep going "OMFG, thank God you didn't choose Bristol, Surrey, and all the other places that don't even offer accommodation for first years!"

So1invictus · 26/08/2023 11:30

@Thisisnotmyname2022 maybe students with disabilities are accommodated after the first year. I know there are some specific residences for those with additional needs.

I am giving this far too much thought because we've not heard. I read firm choices are guaranteed accommodation but not necessarily on campus.....has anyone heard of firm choices not offered campus? DD would get used to it if that's the case.

Have I just answered your question on Wiwi? 😂 So funny, the crossover between here and there. ❤️

Thanks. Yes, for this year he has been put somewhere quieter for those with additional needs but I worry what will happen next year and the year after. Makes me sick thinking about it. It’s hard enough he’s going to be so far away 😞

curaçao · 26/08/2023 11:40

Still waiting here

Oh bless you. It really is a brilliant university for welfare. He'll be fine. (I know it's useless me saying that!) ❤️

hanka · 26/08/2023 11:59

Same here curaçao🙄 ds starting to doubt himself if he’s actually done it properly.

@Thisisnotmyname2022 do you mind saying where your DS is?

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 26/08/2023 12:28

Osborne House.

Sorry didn’t quote. Osborne House he is staying.

@So1invictus still looks easy on the Yr2 and 3 housing here in Bath in Oldfield park as we had lots of those private studio flats built that many gravitate too, especially foreign students with big budgets. I like oldfield park area , my friend has renovated a house there and it's nice mixed area with decent shops and some of the student houses are looking decent too these days. It was a shame they lost the massive co op though but only 10 minutes walk to Lidl or sainsburys and a quick 5 mins on bus into town.

Definitely. DD and her friends only looked at a couple but there were loads available and just before Christmas.
A relief when you hear the pita 2nd yr accommodation can be elsewhere.

fortyfifty · 26/08/2023 12:49

I can understand it would be disappointing to be off campus for first year when choosing a campus university - I think particularly if you play a sport and have several training sessions to attend.

However, in terms of socialising and library, Bath has some buildings in the city centre. I believe there are bars attached to city accommodation and there's also a library building and building for clubs/ societies.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/08/2023 13:23

@So1invictus hope your DD is enjoying it here- we live just round the corner from Bath Uni and I like term time as the bus then is just so regular! It's a huge bonus .

KefaloniaKid · 26/08/2023 13:53

@Thisisnotmyname2022 my DD is about to go into the 2nd year staying on campus at Bath. She has Aspergers and was granted DSA. Bath Reslife team have been fantastic with arranging second year accommodation. DD just had to fill in a form setting out her additional needs. It was very easy and they are very accommodating (no pun intended)

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 26/08/2023 14:00

That’s reassuring thank you. He has applied for DSA, I need to chase it up I think x

GreenSalon · 26/08/2023 14:24

Ah ok.
My DS was given Quads but he is registered with the disability service so was just wondering….

incywincyspiders · 26/08/2023 20:35

OscarMikeGolf · 26/08/2023 10:19

Yes I read that somewhere else, if you put a city accommodation anywhere on your choice of 7 then you will get it.

It’s such a shame there’s not enough room on campus for everyone. My DS chose campus unis specifically because they are not too overwhelming. It’s absolutely gutting knowing he won’t be getting on-campus accommodation as it’s his insurance choice (if it was his firm and he didn’t get on-campus I’d be really quite annoyed). At least it’s Bath I suppose and not a really enormous city.

Maybe it’s time for these universities to start building some more on-campus accommodation with all the money they get from foreign students.

I work at UOB (& used to work in accommodation!) There is no more room to build anymore accommodation on campus but please don't worry the city accommodation is just as nice (nicer in some cases) and it's a 10 minute bus journey up to campus. All the students I looked after loved living in the city - Bath is so small after all!

LightandAiry · 27/08/2023 00:06

@So1invictus yes....you can tell how much I'm thinking about accommodation! I believe there's been a crossover with wiwi! I've had my mind taken off it as I've been out all day. My DD isn't thinking about it half as much 😁

OscarMikeGolf · 27/08/2023 18:53

The wait is awful isn't it LightandAiry? I'll be glad when this bit is over and they're all happy and settled in their new accommodation.

LightandAiry · 28/08/2023 09:29

@OscarMikeGolf it's a long time to wait that's for sure. On a different subject did your ds go to an offers day?

OscarMikeGolf · 28/08/2023 11:19

No he didn't as Bath was his insurance but looking back that was a big mistake. It would have been so much easier for him if he had have gone. Oh well nothing like jumping in at the deep end 😁
Did your DD go? What subject is she studying?

LightandAiry · 28/08/2023 18:53

@OscarMikeGolf she did go to the offers day, great university and very friendly. She was allowed to take one guest unlike UCL. We got a free lunch!

Fingerscrossed23 · 31/08/2023 09:13

DD has an insurance offer from Bath. No campus accommodation left so was given 5 city choices which she applied for. A few days ago another message saying she may be put in temporary accommodation at first. Now thinking of deferring to get a place on campus next year but sounds like there is no guarantee. Advice please!

OscarMikeGolf · 31/08/2023 10:13

My DS is in exactly the same position @Fingerscrossed23 , I’m hoping there will be the city accommodation left after all the firms have been allocated. It’s not ideal as that’s why he chose a campus uni - to be on campus. But he missed out on his firm so just waiting to see how this pans out. I don’t know if they will allow your DD to defer for this reason but they hopefully will.
