Bath University Accommodation

Hello, I’m not sure if it’s already being discussed somewhere, sorry if it is. DC has been accepted to Bath Uni (as a first choice) and we’re waiting for an accommodation email. Anyone has already received theirs? It’s our first experience with university application/life. Not sure how long the wait is and we’re getting a bit nervous. Should DC contact them? Or just wait patiently? Thanks for help.

Robotic engineering, he’s joined a couple of societies but he is a very quiet, shy person. (ASD)

Im hoping he finds his feet soon.

Does he play chess? They seem to be a friendly bunch at the chess club.
It’s early days yet hopefully he’ll settle in soon.

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 18/10/2023 18:19

I don’t think he’s ever played to be honest but I imagine he would be quite into it if he tried. I’ll mention it to him.

LightandAiry · 18/10/2023 20:53

@OscarMikeGolf thanks yes DD seems to be settling in OK. She says the weekends are quiet on campus and has joined a sports club.

@Thisisnotmyname2022 all the best to your DS - how is his accommodation now?

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 18/10/2023 21:02

@LightandAiry his accommodation is fine. He’s had a few ants and spiders, hob occasionally trips but he’s not mentioned anything else, apart from the lack of drawers/desk. He just has a small square table but he’s making do.

We are heading to Bath for a few days next week (half term). Can anybody recommend nice places to eat? We will have our other teens with us too - 13 and 16 - but they are non-fussy. Not too keen on pizza

useitorlose · 19/10/2023 10:29

Look for places with student discount if you can! That aside, I like Bill's and lots of Italian/pizza places that I won't bother to mention. Green Rocket for vegetarian/Vegan food too.

bigbadbarry · 19/10/2023 10:31

DD1 is vegetarian so that could be good, thanks

fortyfifty · 19/10/2023 15:36

Regards the food voucher - we were told lots of them save it up as credit and use it in their second year to buy lunch and drinks when they are traveling on to campus each day. Check to be sure it can still be rolled over.

Restaurant recs: Just off the High St (and the door is more or less next to the new multi-million pound matador bollards) is a vegetarian Indian restaurant called Indian Temptation. It has a great view of the Abbey at night. You could also try Bandook Kitchen in Milsom Place (they do nice tiffin for lunch).

DD(16) really likes the local(ish) chain Coconut Tree (Sri Lanken street food), primarily for the animal shaped mugs(?) they serve mocktails in.

The usual chains (Côte, The Ivy, Cafe Rouge, Comptoir Libannais are all here).

For a smarter meal, try the Circus or Clayton's Kitchen. Try Woods if you are after more traditional French-influence Bistro food. It has been around for decades and is one of the few places that serves dishes of veg and bread rolls as standard, not an extra.

Courtyard cafe is good for brunch, but it isn't particularly big.

Have fun and make sure you pay scrupulous attention to where the bus gates and bus lanes are.

The Scallop Shell for fish. It wins awards. Book in advance though!

Anyone else’s DC looking for second year accommodation already?

fortyfifty · 02/11/2023 11:35

Yes, but DD is looking for her final year. She's currently on placement elsewhere - which is making it extra fun! I have to not look. What you get for your money is just so dire.

Anyone else’s DC looking for second year accommodation already?

This starts so early, they hardly seem to have started and then it's talk of next year's accommodation already. DD is in 2nd year and was lucky to get a house share this year. They were hoping to stay on for next year but they have just been told that the rent will increase which means not all of them can afford to stay and now they are in a panic. It seems like everything is stacked against students.

curaçao · 03/11/2023 14:27

No.She is very sure she would not want to spend another year living with her current flatmates

Lemoncurd · 03/11/2023 16:16

Mine started looking at around Christmas time each year, and didn't actually sign anything until spring. They still seemed to be finding plenty to look at in Bath this spring so there is no panic (student houses for 4).

Don't think they have yet been asked if they want to stay next year and last year their house wasn't remarketed until after Christmas so more will be coming available in 2024 as current tenants make their decisions.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 03/11/2023 17:19

@Lemoncurd Can I ask if this is recent experience? Last year it seemed everything was snapped up very quickly before Christmas and I worry some make hasty decisions in panic.

Lemoncurd · 03/11/2023 18:31

@SilverGlitterBaubles yes, this year, they started looking for a house for 5 after Christmas, then dropped down to 4 and it must have been March or April before they signed. They looked at quite a few houses as I know they were deliberating over which one.
The year before must have been a bit earlier but they didn't see that house until after Christmas either.
