Well done @mumsneedwine's dd.Smile That's fantastic!

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 09/03/2023 13:03

I hope Julian Burton still drops in here occasionally!

Unlikely, as he doesn't work in admissions any more.

It is also strange that he was offered a Biology degree when he is not doing Biology A level.

When you say "a biology degree", what was he actually offered? It would seem odd if it were biology, as Sheffield requires A-Level biology for this, but not so odd if it's biochemistry or biomedical sciences, which quite a lot of people do without biology A-Level.

The Sheffield interview question about knowledge of the city is something I flag up to any group of sixth-formers I talk to. As they give the interview questions out in advance, I think this is intended to be something that tests their ability to work out what they will need to know and do the relevant research. I don't know the exact wording of the question, so I can't guess what details might be missed by someone who has visited but not researched.

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 09/03/2023 13:04

Which deanery is she in @mumsneedwine? I noticed a flurry of requests for references from the foundation programme office at midday today.

Monkey2001 · 09/03/2023 13:26

Great news @mumsneedwine , stage 1 over! Do they have to rank their jobs next?

@NoNotHimTheOtherOne it was C200, so Biology BSc, which requires Biology A level. He knows a lot about Sheffield and the course, as did DS1 when he was rejected for the same reason in 2019. DS1 talked about dissection, early patient contact, Arctic Monkeys, Peak District, lively city, but failed the station with a 1/5 or 2/5. I don't know exactly what DS2 said, but I can't believe it could have been bad enough for a red flag as he had studied the course and has spent more time there in the last 6 months than most applicants will have done. When Julian Burton did his talk back in 2019 he mentioned weak answers they had previously heard for that question such as "it has shops". I am not claiming either of mine should have scored 5/5, but it is ridiculous that they got scores low enough to act as red flags.

mumsneedwine · 09/03/2023 14:35

Yes, job ranking already done. All v exciting.
She'd rather I didn't say what Deanery as it makes her v identifiable, but it's not nearer us. She chose on the basis of standard of living. So she'll be able to afford to live in her own place, it's a Deanery which ranks v highly for trainee happiness and it's a beautiful part of the country. And has lots of her favourite specialities in the 2 years.

I do think that in bending over backwards to try and be fair (publishing the interview questions in advance) Sheffield's selection process has actually ended up being less fair than any other uni with unseen questions, or at least it can't possibly be a good way of distinguishing between candidates' real knowledge. How can the interviewers possibly compare interviewees who have all pre-prepared, researched and and in some cases rote-learnt their 'perfect' answers to each question? I really don't think it makes sense to select future doctors based on their recitation skills but hey, what do I know?

Congratulations to @mumsneedwine 's dd on her F1 place. Ds missed his first choice by a whisker and is a bit disappointed at the moment but will be fine at his second choice which has a lot going for it, not least he won't be the opposite end of the country from his parents (not that that factored into his decision making at all)!

Congratulations to all the offer holders - exciting times!

DD received an offer for BSMS today! 🎉 She is excited but mainly relieved!

This thread has been full of advice, support, generosity and kindness. Many thanks to you all.

Africa2go · 09/03/2023 19:16

Fab news on F1 placement @mumsneedwine and more offers (@justjuggling ).

Nottingham have started releasing offers too althought still waiting here.

Thethingswedoforlove · 09/03/2023 19:38

Offers here for Nottingham and Lincoln. Dds first offers. Delighted.

mumsneedwine · 09/03/2023 19:44

Any questions about Notts I may be able to help.
@Haffdonga scores were nuts this year, especially for London.

Thethingswedoforlove · 09/03/2023 20:00

@mumsneedwine thank you

coffeeandbiscuittime · 09/03/2023 20:15

Sorry to hear that @Monkey2001 - I agree I think knowing the questions may be detrimental and I am surprised about your sons rejection ( I was so hoping he would get an offer).
DD got an offer today for Bristol- the relief!
She is still waiting for HYMS and Newcastle.
The pressure is off now she has one offer.
@mumsneedwine where did your DD get?

mumsneedwine · 09/03/2023 20:15

@coffeeandbiscuittime she doesn't want me to say as it's a bit identifiable. But she's v v happy.

Peachy2005 · 09/03/2023 20:21

@Monkey2001 so sorry to hear your DS didn’t get the Sheffield offer. Just for comparison, if it helps, DD has sent me the full details of what she covered in her answer at that station - do you want me to PM it to you or is it ok to post it here?

Congrats to all on the new offers and placements!

Congrats on Bristol. We are still waiting anxiously for a decision

Monkey2001 · 09/03/2023 21:57

Congratulations on the offers @justjuggling and @Thethingswedoforlove and especially for @coffeeandbiscuittime - the gap year worked out!

@Haffdonga hope he can be excited about second choice and managed to get some really good jobs. I assume the downside of "just" scraping in to a competitive deanery is that you may be at the bottom of the list for job allocation (if that is how it works).

@Peachy2005 it would be interesting to know what your DD said, although DS did prepare for interviews with 2 current Sheffield first year students, so I would have thought they knew what worked. I would like to not be baffled!

Peachy2005 · 09/03/2023 22:25

@Monkey2001

I’ve pm’ed you what she sent me. One would imagine prepping with Sheffield students should have been ideal.

in any case, at least he already has UEA and fingers crossed for his Newcastle and Leicester!
