@Pip4764 reassure DD that you can have an insurance with higher grades. Feels weird but sometimes works out. Never turn an offer down unless have more than 2

Pip4764 · 05/03/2023 14:42

Thanks @mumsneedwine i will get her to wait shift St Andrews, as that would be her insurance choice, if she gets an offer. Think she is maybe just a bit impatient!!
@Cratos yes we are Scottish, all other would be conditional on 3 Bs at AH, Edinburgh only ask for 2.

Cathpot · 05/03/2023 14:52

We have just done the same- put Edinburgh down as firm with AAB and Sheffield as second with AAA. Felt counterintuitive but I can see the logic about deferred years and dropped grades. Withdrawing from the other 2 felt oddly risky but these were her top choices and realistically she isn’t going to get a lower offer. Wondering if we triggered a widening access offer as our postcode and her school do qualify for some unis. I found this info on Edinburgh accommodation site which seems to suggest that she might as well get on with applying now.

My dd may do the same as yours @cathpot, but with Glasgow as insurance. I think AAB is contextual - my daughter has the same - which like you may be down to postcode and/or armed forces parent.
As you see from your screenshot, she can only apply for Edi accomm after your offer is unconditional, which means after a level results day, so no benefit to deciding now. Was the same for my dd1. They guarantee accom for people who come from outside Edi in year 1. Dd1 got a great room, cheaper than the cheapest advertised, in Marchmont, though not on her list.

Cathpot · 05/03/2023 17:19

@FedUpOfThisDynamic
Thats reassuring that she will get a room somewhere. It’s a very very long way from us as we are in south west but DH’s family are there so there will be back up if she needs it. Don’t want to get ahead of ourselves as she still needs to get the grades of course.

For anyone waiting for Newcastle - on TSR a Newcastle rep has said that this year all offers and rejections will be sent out at the same time. No batches like in previous years. They are saying that all decisions will be made by the UCAS deadline of 18th of May but that they are hoping to process decisions earlier than that.

OP posts:
kackle · 06/03/2023 17:05

Any updates from Bristol as yet?

Wow, sounds like it might be a long wait for people who have applied to Newcastle, then!

opoponax · 06/03/2023 17:23

I haven't seen any more offers from Bristol @kackle. DD is still on hold. Looks like they have only made offers to a minority of exceptionally high interview scorers and that the majority of offers and rejections have yet to come.

OP posts:
kackle · 06/03/2023 19:39

Rejections sent out this eve on TSR sadly

opoponax · 06/03/2023 20:16

I know @kackle . I feel so sorry for the Bristol DC getting rejections. They are all being so kind sharing the details of their rejections too.

@Cratos fairly sure that Sheffield said you can defer up to two years no questions asked because they would prefer you to be ready to study than wishing you were in Goa.

@Unexpecteddrivinginstructor thank you very much.

Cratos · 07/03/2023 18:03

My DS received an offer from Bristol today after his interview on the 22 Feb. He is very pleased since Bristol was his top choice but we are a bit concerned about the high accommodation and living costs there. We also need to find out if Bristol would accept a deferred entry.

Cathpot · 07/03/2023 18:57

That’s great news at @Cratos ! Hopefully he can take a moment to enjoy it. I am in denial about the potential costs coming up. I am presuming there is little space in medics course for part time jobs for students .

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 07/03/2023 19:07

I am presuming there is little space in medics course for part time jobs for students .

Most of the medical students I know have part-time jobs in term time or full-time jobs in holidays, or both. The jobs tend to change over the course of the degree: pre-existing catering/retail jobs in early years, bank healthcare assistants in later years.

mumsneedwine · 07/03/2023 19:07

@Cratos huge congratulations 🥳. My youngest DD is at Bristol and yes, it's pricier than some cities, but DD absolutely loves it (she's a vet). Halls can be cheaper if choose the older ones and houses cheaper if a bit further from campus. DD pays £165 a week but her house is a huge old merchants house 10 minutes from Uni and 10 minutes from the Downs. Her friend pays £125 a week, about 15 minutes further out.
I love Bristol. It's a fantastic city and seems to have a fantastic student life. Let me know if want any other Bristol info (not medic related 😊).

mumsneedwine · 07/03/2023 19:09

And my medic DD worked summers after year 1 and 2 as a HCA and earned a lot, which has covered her 5th year.

opoponax · 07/03/2023 19:16

Well done to your DS @Cratos! He must have done a great interview. ⭐

OP posts:
Cratos · 07/03/2023 19:58

Thank you @Cathpot and @mumumsneedwine

I guess when students rent a house they have to pay for the whole year. I was wondering if private student halls might work out cheaper if it doesn't have to be paid for the whole year.

mumsneedwine · 07/03/2023 20:06

@Cratos houses are usually cheaper than halls, even with a year contract. DD lives on the minimum loan (we pay rent) and still has money left at end of each term. And she parties (& plays polo !).

Cratos · 07/03/2023 20:23

@mumsneedwine thank you. 165 pounds a week is about 8500 for a year for housing. Minimum maintenance loan is about 4500. How much do we need to send them monthly (or do they need to earn) in addition to this ? To pay for the remaining accomodation cost and for the living expenses?

mumsneedwine · 07/03/2023 20:26

@Cratos we pay the rent and DD lives on the £4,200. She usually has a few hundred left each term and goes out a lot ! Her rent is at the high end - they found a lovely house early in 1st year during covid and are still there now so no shopping around. There are much cheaper places.
Me and hubbie have not had a holiday in 3 years - once they've graduated we are going travelling !

Cratos · 07/03/2023 20:59

@mumsneedwine now I understood what you meant. My brain is not working very well at the moment.

You are right mumsneedholiday too 😀. Hope your time will come soon.
We have 2 sons and the other one will start uni in a couple of years time so we might be eating beans on toast for a few years 😬
I am actually pleasantly surprised to hear maintenance loan lasts whole year even without the rent payment.

Monkey2001 · 07/03/2023 21:18

Congratulations @Cratos , I can also offer Bristol advice as I am a Bristol graduate and have lived here for 25 years. It is a great city!

I was really hoping we would hear from Sheffield today. It is not feeling too good now, which is really surprising, as I thought DS would do very well at interview. It does not matter though, if he does not get offers from Sheffield or Leicester, he will happily go to UEA, even though he only applied there because it was the one where he had the best chance of an offer as he could make use of his super high UCAT.

Should be lots coming through in the next 2-3 weeks. We are nearly there!

kackle · 07/03/2023 21:28

Great news.

still waiting for Bristol here
