Congratulations @Cratos , I can also offer Bristol advice as I am a Bristol graduate and have lived here for 25 years. It is a great city!

I was really hoping we would hear from Sheffield today. It is not feeling too good now, which is really surprising, as I thought DS would do very well at interview. It does not matter though, if he does not get offers from Sheffield or Leicester, he will happily go to UEA, even though he only applied there because it was the one where he had the best chance of an offer as he could make use of his super high UCAT.

Should be lots coming through in the next 2-3 weeks. We are nearly there!

Might see you at UEA. We are at the offer holders day next weekend and then Plymouth at the end of the month. Long old jaunt from NW England.

Pip4764 · 07/03/2023 21:39

@Cratos well done! Bristol sounds fabulous!

Monkey2001 · 07/03/2023 23:16

@kackle yes, we will be there. Norwich is a long way for us, but Newcastle to Plymouth is real dedication!

It just feels as if Sheffield have stalled. I wonder whether someone is off sick or something. 🤞he hears back soon, if not at least he has UEA which was a strategic application for him, and seems like a really nice course.

Monkey2001 · 08/03/2023 12:26

@Unexpecteddrivinginstructor what usually happens at Sheffield is a couple of days of reserve list, a week of offers, them the rejections. There may be a few more offers to come, but I would say less than 50% chance now - just hope I am wrong. Sheffield have a weird version of MMIs where if one person does not like you, it does not matter how you do on the other stations. Sadly, this undermines the principle of MMIs where you are supposed to get a fresh start at each station. I know I am biased, but all the people he works with at the Childrens' hospital - doctors, nurses, physios, physiologists, say he will be a lovely doctor, so he really should not have got any red cards!

I am not looking for comforting words from anyone, just sharing information. He really will be happy to go to UEA, it just highlights for me how arbitrary the whole process is!

opoponax · 08/03/2023 13:14

@Monkey2001 fingers crossed for some good news from Sheffield. Your DS is also waiting for Newcastle isn't he? DD put on hold again for Bristol today.

OP posts:
Monkey2001 · 08/03/2023 14:29

@opoponax yes, waiting for Newcastle, but that was his worst interview and he would choose UEA over Newcastle. Sorry to hear that Bristol is being so slow for your DD, she must be right on the threshold!

Nothing from Bristol here. No second hold. Beginning to think a rejection is in the offing

opoponax · 08/03/2023 14:53

It is good that your DS is keen on UEA @Monkey2001. It makes the wait easier. DD is genuinely really excited about going to any of her 4 so that helps too. Bristol was her first interview and she only had the options of early dates because of her very high UCAT. I think she felt she was more in her stride with the others, despite them being bang in the middle of mocks.

OP posts:
opoponax · 08/03/2023 14:55

@kackle I don't think the second hold means anything at all. When DS got his Bristol offer two years ago, he was put on hold twice and then got an offer and friends got offers around the same time and had never been put on hold. I think it is quite random.

Sheffield rejection in. He will request feedback, but SO thankful to have the UEA offer. The offer holder day will feel more real now.

Don't fill the thread up with sympathy posts - I know you are all on our side! 😘

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 08/03/2023 15:55

They only need one, @Monkey2001!Smile

Sluj · 08/03/2023 16:43

No sympathy from me @Monkey2001 , just congratulations- your son will love UEA and get a fantastic medical education there. Any questions please DM me but hopefully he will enjoy UEA as much as mine did. DS2 is desperate to move back to Norwich having graduated last year. DS1, the medic, has commented how well prepared he was for FY years by UEA. Even during his placements as a student several doctors commented on how much more ready and confident the UEA students were compared to students from... a neighbouring county , shall we say 😀

Sluj · 08/03/2023 16:44

PS, great coffee, lunches and cakes to be had at the Sainsbury Centre for the Arts on campus at UEA if you get time.

opoponax · 08/03/2023 16:49

UEA's gain then @Monkey2001.

@Sluj 😂@MrsBennetsPoorNerves and @opoponax thanks!

Best of luck to the parents of doctors getting their foundation placements tomorrow. Let us know how they get on!

mumsneedwine · 08/03/2023 18:43

@Monkey2001 thanks. Although tomorrow they just find out the general area eg. Scotland 😂. Another long wait until find out the actual town they will be in.
Sorry about Sheffield. But he's got the 'one' and he's going to be a doctor. And he'll have a blast doing it 🍻

kackle · 08/03/2023 20:13

@Monkey2001 well done to your son for UEA. Sheffield’s loss is UEA gain for sure.

We were so impressed with the UEA open day last year, loved the campus and med school.

DD really looking forward to the offer holder’s day. We’ve booked an Airbnb and looking forward to exploring Norwich.

Monkey2001 · 09/03/2023 10:30

@kackle and anyone else going to UEA offer holder day, it would be lovely to meet IRL. I think parents have a lot of free time.

Monkey2001 · 09/03/2023 11:22

Have to share the feedback from Sheffield - I am really wondering whether their spreadsheet has got a mistake on it as he failed on knowledge of city and course which is RIDICULOUS as his best friend is a first year medic at Sheffield and he has visited him 3 times this year, been to student events at the union and discussed the course with him and another first year medic from his school on the course. It should have been one of his best scores and I just can't believe that he should have failed that station!

It is also strange that he was offered a Biology degree when he is not doing Biology A level.

Luckily we are all laughing about it, a bonding experience for DS1 and DS2 as both failed the same station, which should have been their strongest!

I hope Julian Burton still drops in here occasionally!

How frustrating to get knocked down on something like that, @Monkey2001. I think it's easier for them to deal with if they feel that the feedback is fair, but it sounds like he actually knew loads about the city and course.

Still, onwards and upwards. He'll have an amazing time at UEA, I'm sure!

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 09/03/2023 11:42

So strange, I wonder if it is an easy one for them to knock points off on. I also wonder whether that one is one where the students are interviewing so not being as skilled they are using their own prejudices more. He will have a fab time at UEA and he can enjoy the holidays!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 09/03/2023 11:50

That makes me so angry for your DS @Monkey2001 . So unfair on him.

mumsneedwine · 09/03/2023 12:25

Really sorry @Monkey2001. Stupid reason to be rejected. I'd never even been to the city I went to Uni at. Would have struggled to place it on a map.

And if anyone is interested DD got her first choice Deanery, so v happy.

Thethingswedoforlove · 09/03/2023 12:52

That’s amazing @mumsneedwine. we are definitely interested. It’s very interesting to hear about the process later on but your provide so much support to so many that we are definitely interested in and invested in the wellbeing of your dcs! And this particular dd’s journey is one we sort of have a vague notion of beginning to understand. Will she be closer to you when she moves to that area?
