I have been working myself up slowly to a much needed detox for too long now.

I really am abusing my body by

Drinking at least half a bottle of wine 5 nights a week

Smoking too much and mostly in secret !

Eating crap when the kids are in bed

Not making time for exercise and not swimming which i love because have usually downed a glass of wine with dinner !

Does anybody else want to join me for a full 7 day fag free wine free junk food free lots of water horrible horrible week-at the end of which we will shine from the inside out and feel somewhat marvellous !

Blimey yes, count me in. I keep trying half heartedly to do this but the chocolate just keeps calling me. Don't smoke so that part will be easy, the rest ... well...erm yes guilty. Can we start after the weekend though...Please?

Why are you doing this to you?.

What started this all off?. Not having a go at all but something started all this and that needs to be addressed sharpish through counselling. Soemtimes people drink and abuse their own bodies to block out their emotional pain and have a semblance of control back in their own lives.

Feel you need more than just a 7 day self imposed detox (after which time you will probably start up again with the drink etc); the amount you're drinking for a start is something that needs to be tackled as a matter of urgency. You're drinking way too much for your body to cope with.

Please seek proper medical help, your GP would be a good place to start. Would also suggest you read the other thread on here recovering alcoholics and alcoholism. At least you admit that you have a problem; that is often the hardest step to take.

fakeblonde · 11/05/2007 09:22

Oh God i never even thought of that !
Does half a bottle of wine 5 nights a week really make me an alcoholic ? Have always shared a bottle with dh over dinner and we stay off every week for 2 nights.

Something did happen a few years ago and it was horrible because my family (not dh)totally let me down and made me realise when we needed them most they turned away.

It hurt more than you can ever imagine, and i think i had some sort of breakdown but tbh never really had time to address it.
Just remember being a real coper before hand and now i get well stressed if i have too much on.
I remember weeks on end where i just lay in bed crying and too scared to leave the house .
Lots of horrid stuff all happened at once and i had noone at all to help.I remember feeling totally and completely on my own.
Kind of made me hard since and bitter i suppose.

And i am so so always going to be there for my children whatever.

Hi Fakeblond.

I don't think you are necessarily an alcoholic. You are drinking above recommended government guidlines - 1/2 bottle of wine = about 4.5 units. However its easy to slip into that if you are sharing one with DP over dinner.

I think being an alcoholic is more about dependency and not being able to stop even if you want to.

So giving up for a week combined with healthy eating etc is a good way to kick off a more healthy "new you".

If you do have problems giving up for a week then maybe you need to look at some of the many drink aware type websites that are mentioned on other threads.

I'll join you if you are still on for it as have been over indulging myself recently and am feeling knackered and tired after a rather stressfull time at work.

What are you proposing - total detox of the hot water & lemon juice variety or just a ban on booze/ fags/ large cream cakes & emphasis on 5 fruit & veg a day?

hellobello · 13/05/2007 14:21

I'll join you! There's nothing sinister about wanting to improve things!

kazzia · 13/05/2007 14:48

Lets start tomorrow as am going out for nice meal tonight.

What's your preferred approach HB? Lemon & water or just being more healthy?

I'm think I fancy:

No booze
No coffee but will still have tea as doesn't seem so bad
Lots of water (think its meant to be 2 litres a day)
Lots of fruit & veg

talcygoneorange · 13/05/2007 15:01

Will join you

Fell off the healthy wagon last weekend

Need to get back on

DrNortherner · 13/05/2007 15:07

If you are starting tomorrow I'll join too. I too am smoking when I shouldn't be, eat too much chocolate and junk. Alcohol not a problem for me as I don't drink.

So:

No chocolate/sweets/cake/crap
No fags
No alcohol
More fruit n veg
More exercise

kazzia · 13/05/2007 15:33

Dr N - can you really do no fags just like that? I used to smoke long ago and found it really hard just stopping. But maybe you are just a "social" smoker who is slipping.

Imagine eating no crap will be no problem .

How are we going to report progress - daily evening confession session with no fibbing?

DrNortherner · 13/05/2007 15:35

No I don't think I can actually!! But I'll give it a go.

kazzia · 13/05/2007 15:38

Good on you Dr N. If you don't manage cold turkey I'd really recommend nicotine gum/ lozenges.

hellobello · 13/05/2007 17:29

I've been using the nicotine lozenges instead of starting smoking again. They do the job! For me, it's cutting the booze to sensible levels! They haven't been very sensible this weekend, or last weekend. I'm also a lazy cook and would like to be better, since I cook v. well when I try a tiny bit. I haven't had a nicotine lozenge for a few days, which feels slightly odd, but I haven't missed them much. Oh how I crave a soapy, minty, foul textured pill!

kazzia · 13/05/2007 18:18

Sad isn't it. Even tho' they are yucky and even worse when you are trying to drink glass of wine, I liked them so much that I started up on them again having been nicotine free while I was pg.

Still have now stopped so am trying to regain my lost temple like youth.

fakeblonde · 13/05/2007 18:48

Hi all,
yes Im still in for the whole detox thing. Think ill be sensible and give up the weed tomorrow.
Have bought my nicorette inhaler ready to go.
So heres my plan-
give up cigs, caffeine and any junk food.
2 litres of water a day.
More exercise.
3 meals a day instead of missing breakfast.
5 portions of fruit and veg.
After a week wine only at weekends or if we have friends over or go out (rarely !)
Am going to a rather good bash on Sat in a lovely limo with some lovely friends, so will i glow by then or be hysterical !
