As discussed, a new thread for people who want a bit of a boost to their health. The suggested rules are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEG EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and if we enjoy it I will start a new thread each Monday. Post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Useful info here about what constitutes a portion of fruit or vegetables.

I've started coach, I've started!!

A kiwi fruit and a large navel (why does the thought of eating a large navel still make me ?

out for a pre-planned swim later...

and thanks for the 5-per day guide..

bresha · 08/08/2006 12:37

Sounds like a good idea f&z
Count me in
Iv done 10 mins exercise 2 day,
only had one portion of fruit 2day so far.
I think I will also include 10 glasses (smallish ones) of water 2day,
I really don?t drink enough of the stuff

FrannyandZooey · 08/08/2006 12:42

I have had 5 portions so far but I will find that part easy, in fact this is just an excuse for me to justify more fruit buying to dp.

The exercise part is more challenging for me. Ds is going to a friend's this afternoon so I will try to exercise more than my typing fingers for a change

Please join us if you like the idea, all welcome

Count me in please.Have eaten 5 portions today already as well as doing half an hour of heavy gardening.lol.Going swimming this evening whilst dc are at their dads.
This is my second day and feeling quite good at the moment, had the best nights sleep ive had in ages last night.

FrannyandZooey · 08/08/2006 12:49

Oh hell I really should go swimming but I loathe it. I am hoping this thread will give me some good ideas for exercise I actually like. I like classes but there are seldom any on at times I can do, also they are pricey. I think I may go for a long walk this afternoon.

OP posts:
Pandorasjarboy · 08/08/2006 20:03

Aren't we the healthy ones!!

up to three portions and 15 mins of swimming.

Doing a 'power walk' may sound cheesy, but stomping out a fair old lick, especially up any hills/long slopes really can get the pulse up and a good sweat on..and it's free!!

FrannyandZooey · 08/08/2006 20:12

Right I have had 7 portions of fruit and a big plate of veg stew (no idea how to count portions but it must have been at least 3)

Went out for long walk....but bumped into a friend and ended up standing in his allotment eating peas from the shell for an hour instead

which of course counted towards my 10 a day

I probably walked about a mile if that, not very good really, but better than sitting on my arse I suppose

NOW - pandora wotsit - are you new? Are you male? And what the devil is your name all about, pls?

OP posts:
Charlee · 08/08/2006 20:17

Count me in!
I walked all round tesco today which took us about an hour so thats my excersise plus i hoovered my house from top to bottom which is great excersise!

Im not sure if i have done 10 foods yet but i am a grazer so im sure i will by bed time so far i have had.

3 Plums

a huge salad consisting of snow peas/lettuce/cherry toms/cucumbers

a hanfull of Grapes

A handfull of Strawberries

1 Apple

smaal portion of fruit salad mango's/melon/pineapple and berries

i have done well considering all that snacking is usually choccy biscuits! Have been meaning to drink more water and juice but have forgot today so am off to get a huge glass of water!

CitizenFranny · 08/08/2006 20:31

Yay, well done all

Charlee I reckon that is 9 at least

Not impressed by shopping as exercise though you should have stood around eating peas like me instead

Pandorasjarboy · 08/08/2006 20:41

Yes, F&Z, right on both counts!! Male AND new!!

Well fairly new...was previously Lottelou, ( based in my daughter's name but this caused a bit of gender-confusion on threads and it seemed gauche to start off "btw I am male!"..

the Pandora bit?, well am attracted by the Greek myth of Pandora, who kept all the evils of the world in a jar ( not a Pandora's box - Ancient Greeks didn't have boxes!) - all plague and pestilence, BUT despite all of that, at the bottom of her jar was the human quality of 'enduring hope' when all else was gone...

And 'boy' is to denote my gender.....other MNers shorten it to 'Pan'..

CitizenFranny · 08/08/2006 20:44

But it just sounds sort of....seedy

the jarboy bit

it sounds like you might be into some strange sexual perversion or something

erm, which of course you might

Charlee · 08/08/2006 20:44

Lol! Believe me if you had ever been shopping with DP and DS you would know its excersise!

Plus my hoovering thing was good since i was on all fours doing under furniture i even did the sofas and corners of the rooms to get the spiders! i was all over the place

Actually saying that i also chased our chooks down the road when they escaped this moring it took more than 10 mins!

Im sitting here with a big bottle of raspberry spring water now and im bound to munch something else before bed and i will make sure its fruit

NotQuiteCockney · 08/08/2006 20:49

Ok, 10 portions of fruit and veg is pretty ambitious, but 10 minutes of exercise? Really?

Today I have had:

  • dried fruit in muesli (1)
  • most of a giant orange (1)
  • tomato + avo (+ mozza) salad (2?)
  • giant portion of stir fry with loads and loads of veg in it (4?)

So at least 8 portions there.

Exercise-wise, despite being completely exhausted, I've done at least 30 minutes of walking, and 20 minutes of biking, and am contemplating doing a pilates tape now, as am worried about foot injury, so will save running for tomorrow night or something.

CitizenFranny · 08/08/2006 20:52

NQC, not many people do exercise every day. I certainly don't. The 10 minute rule is a good one I think because everyone can do 10 mins, there are no excuses, it avoids scaring people off, and once you have got over the psychological hump and got started you will probably do more anyway.

Also, I think doing 10 mins bursts of exercise is actually quite a valid way to get fit, or am I making that up?

Pandorasjarboy · 08/08/2006 20:53

Shovel?? Try a JCB!!

Seedy? Well, like beauty, that really is in the eye of the beholder!

Sexual perversions...I'll keep them to myself, thank you very much...

CitizenFranny · 08/08/2006 20:54

This is useful if you want more detailed information about portion size.

Are you joining us btw NQC, or just dropping in to scoff at our puny exercise goal?

CitizenFranny · 08/08/2006 20:56

Sorry Pan

I feel I have got it off my chest at least

I do tend to be very rude and bossy about people's names. I like the Pandora bit and the jar bit, I think it's the boy bit I have problems with. I am presuming you are over 18?

Pandorasjarboy · 08/08/2006 20:58

just.

CitizenFranny · 08/08/2006 21:00

Are you having me on?

Pandorasjarboy · 08/08/2006 21:04

of course!!

you started it!! Didn't even THINK about the 'seedy' bit until you triggered me to think why it could be seedy..

NotQuiteCockney · 08/08/2006 21:06

Hmm, I think you really need 20 minutes sustained aerobic exercise, for heart + lungs fitness.

I am an exercise addict, and it's got worse lately. I am fretting about 5 days in a resort over the holidays with no real running opportunities .

Ooh, they've started doing military boot-camp type group workouts in our local park, and I'm tempted. Bad sign.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/08/2006 21:07

I probably will join. I should be having more than 5-per-day. Canadians are supposed to get 9, I think.

CitizenFranny · 08/08/2006 21:15

Ok PanBoy

thought I had some real live young flesh on here for a minute

NQC I will attempt to find links to refute your 20 minute claim, anyway, this is an improved mood and wellbeing thread and I reckon 10 mins will fix that alright.

Pandorasjarboy · 08/08/2006 21:16

if it helps, you do

CitizenFranny · 08/08/2006 21:18

Oh believe me, it helps
