As discussed, a new thread for people who want a bit of a boost to their health. The suggested rules are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEG EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and if we enjoy it I will start a new thread each Monday. Post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Useful info here about what constitutes a portion of fruit or vegetables.

not eating fruit isn't wuzzyness...making a meal of something else is!!

love the 'peering over glasses at panboy' line...

and I am re-applying myself to the task..

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 21:44

Oh, I was actually trying for something less-polite ;-). I can never let "unbalanced" go by with its strictly literal meaning.

But yeah, I'm not surprised to hear you have balance issues - I do too, but they're much better, since I've been doing wobbly tooth-brushing. Hold onto the sink, the first time, work yourself up to holding an arm out for balance, then arm at the side, then eyes closed. You'll wobble, it will improve both your balance from a vestibular-system perspective, and by improving the strange little muscles around your knees.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 21:48

How am I going to manage any of my 10 on Monday?

We are flying out at 3pm or something. We will have to be at the airport for noon. (We can go in a special queue, thanks to DH's frequent flyer thingie, but still ...) DH is being cranky about the idea of me running before we go . I think we will leave around 10am.

And WTF will I eat? I think I will maybe buy fruit tomorrow and eat it in the taxi? God, this "no carry on" thing really sucks, I do normally carry large amounts of water, and some fruit, although mostly bananas for the kids.

Panboy · 12/08/2006 21:50

if I may offer..try standing with your back against a wall, and bend your knees slightly as you slide a few inches down, and hold it there for a while..and no, this is NOT a Dr Luurve tip

Panboy · 12/08/2006 21:52

with ankles directly below position of knees

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 21:53

Oh, yes, that works too. I do the same sort of thing, only without the wall. Hard to keep your back straight, though.

You want legs apart for the wall thing, right?

FrannyandZooey · 12/08/2006 21:54

There is only room for one Lurve Doctor on this site PanMan, and it's not you

Ok, that makes sense about the balance / knee / foot thing. Is this why my glittering career as a ballet dancer began and ended when I was 33?

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 21:54

Your balance really can improve, though. I thought mine was a lost cause, but now I can stand on one leg for a reasonable amount of time and not fall over.

FrannyandZooey · 12/08/2006 21:57

From memory I can do one and not the other

When I was pregnant I had to do some hideous exercise that sounded like that slidey up and down the wall one - I had agonising back pain. The physio would move me a fraction of an inch and say "Like that! No, you've moved!" then wiggle my jaw about for a few minutes and say "There! Like that! No, you've moved!"

It did sort of put me off physiotherapy.

and you are picking on me again.....

NotQuiteCockney · 13/08/2006 00:05

They do need to be personable, and some of them aren't.

My experience of physio has always been good, but I've mostly used a private practice near the City. Not cheap, but reliable and good. Well, excellent, really.

FrannyandZooey · 13/08/2006 12:02

Right another day and I have had 4 portions again for breakfast. I feel quite good and my headaches have gone.

On the down side, we are losing NQC tomorrow, for 3 weeks, so I think we should start a recruitment drive. I will start a new thread on Monday morning and I would like everyone to sign in please and also drum up some new members for us.

Also wondering if we have lost people like bresha and Fauve who popped their heads in but haven't reappeared. Was it the bad jokes? Sorry

I've had muesli (1), a tiny bit of pineapple (0, really, kids ate a whole pineapple!), and 400g of cherries (3?). Rest of day hasn't got a lot of fruit and veg in it - sweet potatoes don't count, do beets?

I will probably be here for some of holiday, depends. I think Toronto will involve web access, and if resort portion doesn't include web access I will even pay for it, as five days in the countryside with no DH, two children, and my father hanging about ... gah.

FrannyandZooey · 13/08/2006 13:17

Aviatrix, I don't think there is one of us who has managed to actually fulfill our goals this week! We are only aiming for a better lifestyle, not beating ourselves up too much if it goes wrong (well, just a bit of mild comedy bickering )

NotQuiteCockney · 13/08/2006 13:26

Ahem.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/08/2006 13:26

Although that's not to say I haven't eaten crap, too, whenever I could find any I actually wanted.

FrannyandZooey · 13/08/2006 13:54

Oh sorry NQC

I thought you were struggling with the fruit bit, one or two days? (probably just wishful thinking on my part)

Crap is definitely allowed. Do Pot Noodles count as a portion of veg?

Overrun · 13/08/2006 14:09

Hello all,
I am doing okay on fruit and veg, as predicted it is the exercise that I find more difficult.
So far today I am on four portions, juice, apple, banana, melon pieces.
Am preparing lots of veg for dinner tonight, as well as blackberries for dessert so should make it.
My legs are still stiff, and wondering what to do on that front, as I have so many chores to do today, god knows when I will find the time. I think I will try some dancing, shall go and find some suitable music.
Try not to snigger when you think of me prancing round my living room

NotQuiteCockney · 13/08/2006 14:11

No, I think I made 10 every day. Probably more, once I realised how tiny a portion is.

I won't make it tomorrow, though. I don't think. I probably need to go shopping soon to get some fruit and veg to tide us over.

Panboy · 13/08/2006 14:21

ok - one orange and a spot of naked mud wrestling so far...not good...

Overrun · 13/08/2006 14:27

Just to report back, dancing went well, Goldfrapp in case you are interested, and dh and ds1 got into it too, so was a bit of a laugh. Might try that tomorrow.
I hope you enjoy your holiday NQC,see I got it right this time!
Pan, I think the naked mud wrestling is just wishful thinking, now am I right or am I right?!

Panboy · 13/08/2006 15:28

Overrun - it all happened in Franny's fevered imaginings on another thread..the wishful thinking was her's!! (But am still counting it as my exercise quota!!)

Suitably impressed with your efforts in this dimension.

Overrun · 13/08/2006 16:30

Argh, now is that fair, fraternising on another thread I mean, wheres your loyalty, perhaps if you both exercised your bodies more than your typing fingers you would be managing to get your 10 minutes a day Tough love people
