As discussed, a new thread for people who want a bit of a boost to their health. The suggested rules are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEG EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and if we enjoy it I will start a new thread each Monday. Post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Useful info here about what constitutes a portion of fruit or vegetables.

Lol that showed me Pandorasjarboy

My problem is that im a serial snacker, i literally snack all day its a terrible habit so i switched all my biscuits and sweets to fruit so it seems like i eat alot but its only picking here and there.

Thinking of having roast chicken for dinner so i will have a couple of veggies with that........... (do roast potato's count?)

But seriously this is a great eating plan for me, im 5 1/2 months pregnant and i realised the other day just how much junk i stuff my face with and if i simply dont snack i get hungry so i figure snackings not to bad if its nuts and fruit ect.

As for excersise thats my down fall, i live in the middle of noewhere and im not sure what excersise dvd's im allowed to do being pg, i have yoga and pilates but i dont know if there safe. DOnt get me wrong i dont sit on my but all day at home i clean my house daily which is alot of effort with DS messing it up as fast as i clean!

NotQuiteLouisRiel · 09/08/2006 10:13

Biking and walking are safe in pregnancy. Well, you maybe shouldn't start biking and fall off a lot.

Hmm, at 5.5 months pg, I'd be nervous about going from no-fibre to loads of fibre in your diet. Constipation is a big hassle when you're pregnant. Maybe take it a bit slower?

Charlee · 09/08/2006 10:19

Good point, i do still eat alot of wholewheat bread/rolls and potatos ect.

God i have made myself sound like a food crazed loony! Im not as bas as i sound honest!!!! I still had a slice of Pizza with dinner but i swapped my usual chips for salad, im not radically changing anything

Im sooooooooo embarrassed now.........

Pandorasjarboy · 09/08/2006 12:23

Like carbon emissions, is it possible to buy and sell fruit-and veg "credits" with other MNers - if so, charlee is cornering the market.........no improvement on the g/fruit yet..

Iklboo · 09/08/2006 12:26

10 portions? I struggle some days to eat 5, but will try and up my intake.
Does brisk walking to and from the tram stop (at least a 10 minute walk each way) count towards exercise? I make sure I walk fast enough to raise my heartbeat.

Charlee · 09/08/2006 12:32

I have had a Ham and salad roll and an apple for lunch still peckish though so i may have to reach of a choccy finger or two..........

Does anyone know if i can do pilates or yoga whilst pg? I know i cant do any stretches on my stomach but there is no where to walk round here and i dont have a bike. I find the excersise part more difficult than the food part, i have never been one for excersising

CitizenFranny · 09/08/2006 13:04

I just had a peanut butter and banana sandwich so that's another 1 for me. Charlee potatoes don't count in any form, I'm afraid. See the link in the OP if you are not sure what counts.

I have spent the morning rushing round like a loon waving tambourines and moving wnaky baskets, but no 10 minute session yet. NQC, I'm nervy on the bike and only just got the hang of going on the cycle path by myself - I haven't mastered the road or the bike seat yet (I didn't ride a bike for over 15 years and got scared whenever I tried ). But yes I would like to be able to take ds out, am working up slowly

CitizenFranny · 09/08/2006 13:05

Oh and Charlee I have a Yoga in Pregnancy book you would be welcome to borrow if you like?

NotQuiteLouisRiel · 09/08/2006 14:03

Working up slowly sounds wise.

I've had a Leon super salad for lunch - 3? 4? (lentils, rocket, asparagus, tomato, sprouts, etc etc). And then an ice cream, so I'm doing well on the pies front, too.

Biked to and from Spitalfields, which is about 20 minutes each way, so made my exercise quotient.

There are pregnancy yoga classes and tapes out there, charlee. Books are good, too. When I did pregnancy yoga, it was essentially pilates, but a bit gentler on the abs, for all the obvious reasons.

Charlee · 09/08/2006 14:09

That's a nice gesture CF but i actually just orderd one from amazon! thanks though.

Still need to do my excersise still dont know what to do maybe i will just take a brisk walk i the garden for 10 mins it needs a tidy up anyway, the chickens have made lots of lovely bathing holes in it!

Shame about potato's there yummy!

CitizenFranny · 09/08/2006 18:41

Iklboo, brisk walking definitely counts.

Right I have had 8 I think, no 9. I am really full but will have a snack of fruit before bed. How are people feeling? I am a bit headachey which usually lasts a few days when I stop eating crap and start eating well, but that's ok.

I have still done no exercise. I didn't really do any yesterday either. Am I going to get chucked off my own thread?

Charlee · 09/08/2006 19:05

Think i have done my 10 today. Done some gardening and about to wash the kitchen floor which is my excersise with all the arm stretching, i read thats houseowrk is great excersise especially things like hoovering/dusting ect.

Not feeling to different at the moment but only started it yesterday so bound to take a little while to take effect.

Charlee · 09/08/2006 19:07

found this might be helpfull ways to get some different excersise.

Pandorasjarboy · 09/08/2006 20:29

Only 3 again today..and no exercise...pitiful really...may be joining Franny in the sin bin.

NotQuiteCockney · 09/08/2006 21:04

I think I'm stuck at 4 or 5 today. Will have a grapefruit and an orange, and maybe make a salad. See how I feel. Have skipped tea, largely, whoops.

Did over an hour of bicycling today. I don't think I'll do pilates tonight, as feel like resting, have blocked sinuses, ugh. I actually try to have one day per week with no biking/running or tapes.

CitizenFranny · 09/08/2006 21:13

Right I have just eaten the world's hardest pear to make my 10.

I also went for a bike ride, about 30 mins (nothing strenuous) and saw a swan family with 9 cygnets. And some children throwing a shopping trolley into the river - ahh, the joys of living in Essex.

Panboy, what do you think you're doing? Three? Go and eat some greenery, man

NotQuiteCockney · 09/08/2006 21:15

I am counting the immense stress of this nightmare housing search as most of my vegetables.

I had an email in the middle of the night from an ok place saying they had 1-bed flats, one of which sounded doable. So I emailed back asking questions, got no answers. Called today, got told they've been full forever.

I am just thoroughly fucked off with all of this. I am just about at the point of spending nosebleedingly high amounts of money on a hotel flat we don't want.

CitizenFranny · 09/08/2006 21:18

Oh NQC

I am starting to think you should just forget that part of your trip

Nothing that could possibly happen while you are there could make it worth all this stress

theflumpsmum · 09/08/2006 21:34

Hi All...only managed 8 fruit and veg today, but have cleaned and scrubbed the house from top to bottom and taken the kids and dog out for a big run.been drinking lots of water as well, cokes my downfall but have managed to cut it out.

NotQuiteLouisRiel · 09/08/2006 21:57

Am at 8, or 7.

Have booked nosebleedingly expensive hotel flat after finding four possible (not tempting) accommodation options, and booked the most tempting one. Spa, gym, pool etc etc. Should be ok.

Also, I think, unlike a lot of the other options, it's a real hotel, and a normal booking, so we can cancel it at any time until 4pm the day we arrive, and just stay somewhere else. So if any of my 8 million emails on the subject turn anything up, I can just cancel the hotel.

NotQuiteLouisRiel · 09/08/2006 21:57

I wish I could just cancel that bit, but do want to see a few people there. Also, Toronto has good bra + yarn shopping opportunities.

NotQuiteLouisRiel · 09/08/2006 21:59

At least I have tomorrow childfree, or as much of tomorrow as I want to. (DS1 enjoyed the Rubbish Nursery today, as he played on the playstation and made a good friend. DS2 seemed to agree that he was going there tomorrow. Apparently he was ok about that nursery when I had killer stomach bug.)

I have a list of things to do before going but all are manageable. I think. I did get a bunch of weird chocolate today, to give to people as gifts.

Pandorasjarboy · 10/08/2006 01:05

Ok..feeling bad enough already , you fibre-and-vitC fascist- will try harder....

ZippiZapata · 10/08/2006 06:26

please bear in mind you may not be able to post freely here in future

CitizenFranny · 10/08/2006 08:08

Well if it means I don't get called names by Jarboy that would be no bad thing hey zippi?

Right I have had 4 already. Get out of bed and start eating fruit you gang of layabouts
