As discussed, a new thread for people who want a bit of a boost to their health. The suggested rules are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEG EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and if we enjoy it I will start a new thread each Monday. Post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Useful info here about what constitutes a portion of fruit or vegetables.

Oh God Charlee, poor you. Why aren't you sleeping? Do you go to bed and just fail to sleep? Are you worried about stuff, or in discomfort, or what?

What is your diet like in the later parts of the day?

What do you do to "wind down" for sleeping time?

Exercise, as long as you don't do it late in the day, might help you sleep better ...

FrannyandZooey · 11/08/2006 11:27

Charlee

Would a nice plate of sprouts help? I found these over here next to Panboy, nobody seemed to be using them...

Overrun · 11/08/2006 13:28

poor Charlie Well so far so not so good. My weekly box of organic fruit and veg didn't turn up last night. I was on the phone this morning and they are bringing it round tonight. My problem is that I only have tomatoes red onions and bananas in and no time to go to shops, really busy day I'm afraid.
I have eaten 2 tomatoes for breakfast with museli (does museli count?) 2 tomatoes for lunch with humous sandwhich and a big banana. I will guess at 4.
Plan to do some step ups on the stairs while dts are asleep, hope I don't wake them. I will use a the kitchen timer and let you know how I go.
Franny did you really have sprouts for breakfast or did I read that wrong?

Panboy · 11/08/2006 13:31

charlee - I'm sure a trip to the gp's has crossed your mind??(?)

Just had one of those large salady things from Sainsbury's, the £2.99 one. I am now approx. 90% chlorophyll, and bending toward the sunlight...

and thanks for the stir-fry tip for sprouts NQC - will def. do that....

moving onto brocalli now..may as well get used to what 'stalking' is all about.........

NotQuiteLouisRiel · 11/08/2006 13:31

I've had a sandwich with 3 big cherry tomatoes, so am at 2 for that. Will have blueberries/cherries/apples/courgettes later today. And probably that salad I keep meaning to have.

I went for a short run this morning, so probably only 30 minutes. Went at it pretty hard, though.

FrannyandZooey · 11/08/2006 13:37

Overrun, I reckon your muesli probably had dried fruit in so I make it 5 (tomatoes x 2, muesli, chickpeas in hummus, and banana)

I have had another apple, satsuma, and baked beans - total of 7.

Charlee can you have a nap in the day or is that not possible?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 11/08/2006 13:37

Oh and I didn't have sprouts for breakfast

OP posts:
Panboy · 11/08/2006 13:41

....not for want of trying...............

Overrun · 11/08/2006 13:46

good news on the hummus, did wonder whether to count it. i am now back from my step ups, pretty sweaty, which feels yukky and am now worried I will smell this afternoon. but if I had to change clothes to exercise don't think I would do it.
I would have been very impressed by breakfast sprouts Franny Still I think we all doing pretty well though. Panboy like your name, don't listen to her! You've already had to change it once, reminds me of panspeople.

Charlee · 11/08/2006 16:11

Afternoon.

Lots of questions! I don't know why im not sleeping i am tired and comfortable but just not able to drift off even for a few mins.

I have tried everything, warm relaxing bath, lavendar, chammomile tea, hot milky drink, excersise, writing down my thoughts everything and nothings working!

I will speak to my g.p if it continues but im not sure they will beable to do anything, thier not keen on giving out sleeping pills whilst pg. I think all the other symptoms are just brought on by tiredness.

I cant nap in the day basically becuase i have tried whilst ds is sleeping but again cant drift off!

DP is going to take a few days off next week give me a break.

My diets quite good i have a varied diet and try o include a good balance of things. Its a mystery! Hopefully it will clear up soon.

I have been into town this lunch time and had a walk about wich didnt make me feel alot better but got me some fresh air. I haven't eaten alot just some toast as my stomachs still a bit dicky.

Hope your all having a good day

FrannyandZooey · 11/08/2006 18:19

Charlee is the sickness just pregnancy sickness or something else? I hope you can get some reast tonight.

I have had another 3, (broccoli, carrots, tomato sauce and veg on a pizza) so I've had my 10 I think, or 9.5 at least. Yet again I haven't done any specific exercise but I am knackered - have been running around all afternoon working - hardly sat down for about 3 hours so I think that must count for something.

LOL I am loving the way the thread is developing with me saying "Well I did some very challenging washing up, that must count", and NQC trying to underplay the magnitude of her enormous cycle rides

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 11/08/2006 18:20

oops I hope you can also get some rest Charlee. Not sure what reast is but I don't think you should have any, just in case.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 11/08/2006 18:25

I'm still unclear on portion. I tend to eat rather a lot of everything I eat (see the day of 1.5 kg of raw peas!), so I suspect I'm undervaluing everything.

Anyway, I had 400g of cherries. Which is what, 3? 4? servings? Which puts me at 5 or 6. I'll have pasta with courgettes later (1 or 2?) and probably blueberries or apples.

I don't know why all you mad people don't like exercising, but just get on a bike, do a run, go swimming, do a tape, or something.

NotQuiteCockney · 11/08/2006 18:27

Oh, Charlee, maybe a chat with the GP is wise, in case they can turn up any explanation. (Have you tried ... ahem ... the thing that got you into your current state? That works for some people. And hey, as long as you lot are making false exercise claims ...)

I'd avoid caffeine and refined sugar after 5pm. I'd get out of bed if you're not managing to sleep, and go sit and read something boring, somewhere else (but in low lights, if possible). Maybe have a white-carb sort of snack?

Alternatively, have you done any yoga or self-hypnosis stuff? That can help you sleep ...

FrannyandZooey · 11/08/2006 18:29

I despise swimming. Well, in a pool. Can't run, dodgy fallen arch. I did try cycling, and will again now the mooncup is out. I don't not like exercising, but I am always knackered, and there's never time, and

the dog ate my trainers

Here's your portion info, NQC

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 11/08/2006 18:47

Hmm, by those portion sizes, I am probably closer to 15. Who has ever eaten two handfulls of blueberries? Why would you do that?

I have flat feet and pronation and manage to run just fine, just with good shoes and on soft surfaces. I'm a big fan of the running (in case that wasn't obvious ;-) )

Tapes can be good - I was hooked on Tae Bo for ages, and may well get into it again, as it is feasible (ish) when I am on holiday and DH is away.

Charlee · 11/08/2006 19:43

Lol my spelling mistakes are bad!

I had a little bit of dinner kind of a rustic stew thingy with all the veggies in my garden! Not 10 but enough for today.

I am going to pack our picnic food for tommorrow then have a long lavender infused bath then snuggle in bed with a hot chocolate and a good book.

Wont be posting untill the evening tommorrow so have a healthy fruit and veg packed day!

Thanks for all your lovley messages though im hoping its just a virus or something and i should be feeling better again soon.

According to your guide I have now had 12 portions. Really pleased about this, as haven't really had much more than normal so I am on the right track.
Hope you are feeling better tomorrow Charlie. NVQ, you are obviously a fitness freak . My Asthma really is too bad to do running, but did do my 10 minutes today. Might try and find my skipping rope, mind numbingly boring but easy to do!

FrannyandZooey · 11/08/2006 20:51

Ooh please do join us aviatrix

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 11/08/2006 20:52

Asthma sucks. I only have it with exercise or a bad cold - I always (and only) use my puffer before exercise. In theory, running is meant to help.

Overrun · 11/08/2006 20:56

NVQ It is, I just can't get past the feeling of my chest exploding, the wheeze is just too painful. I don't know why running is so bad, can swim pretty far and am fairly active.
My Asthma is pretty severe though, I am on the optimum amount of inhalers.
Managed to do steps up today but had to walk them by the end, but worked up a sweat, so think that this is good?

Your asthma sounds like a completely different beast than mine - I only have a blue inhaler, and use it only for exercise.

Overrun · 11/08/2006 21:01

aviatrix, pushing buggy up steep hill has got to count, surely?
