As discussed, a new thread for people who want a bit of a boost to their health. The suggested rules are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEG EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and if we enjoy it I will start a new thread each Monday. Post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Useful info here about what constitutes a portion of fruit or vegetables.

What do reckon, Frances? Exercising our bodies more...

fullmoonfiend · 13/08/2006 17:41

Am I too late to join in? Or are you all, ahem, thoroughly 'bonded' now?

Don't want to upset th delicate equilibrium, but I could realy do with joining in a group nag over fruit and veg portions. I find breakfast difficult and often forget to eat lunch, therby ending up with a packet of digestive caramels 1/2 hour before tea. (wheat is a crop? Grows in a field? So must surely count as veg, right? )

Am going for a big start tonight; roast chicken with home-grown, therefore organic - green beans, broad beans, leeks, carrots, broccoli, followed by home-grown apple and blackberry crumble How many's that then?

Panboy · 13/08/2006 17:51

Fullmoonfiend - too many!, puts many of us to ..on behalf of our glorious war leader..please come on in!!

Frances commences a new thread for tomorrow, so please keep an eye on that...for me, I need to up eating the green stuff (that means starting to eat some), and getting on with things at the new gym, where actually I didn't see mud wrestling as a 'class' at all, naked or otherwise...(shome mishtake, surely..)

FrannyandZooey · 13/08/2006 18:29

FMF, thank goodness, someone civilised

They are all filthy round here and he keeps calling me Frances and it's making me go all unnecessary

Please join, I reckon you are having 7 portions in one meal there, so you are obviously gifted at this to begin with.

Overrun, I am going to a Bollywood rave for preschoolers (??) tomorrow so I reckon I will get at least 10 minutes of dancing to add to my pathetic total for the week.

FandZ, bollywood dancing sounds like lots of fun, think I could get into that, let me know how it goes.
Welcome fullmoonfiend, your dinner sounds like mine, heavy on the veg. I think if I had to chose between veg and fruit I would go for veg, not the most riveting question, but what about you lot?

fullmoonfiend · 13/08/2006 20:05

quick question for you experts - I don't do organised exercise. But I don't drive, so in term time, I average minimum 3 miles brisk (cos I'm always late) walking a day.
Plus frenzied alottment digging. Plus sundry running round after young boys (my sons, I mean ! that sounded dodgy!) plus a physical workout 2 days a week working at preschool.
Plus, horizontal dancing with dh when there's nowt good on telly). Plus a damn good boogie every now and again.
Will that do, d' you think? Or do I need to contemplate that exercise malarky?

Overrun · 13/08/2006 20:09

fullmoonfiend, unless I have misunderstood the rules of the game, I think you are probably fine. However, I am also extremely active running around afer my three boys, my twins literally mean I don't stop. I walk lots of places (pushing double buggy up hill, sometimes with three year old on buggy board is pretty hard work) I am still trying to do an extra 10 minutes in a bid to get fitter. Does that make sense?

fullmoonfiend · 13/08/2006 20:11

Panboy - don't fear the frilly food. Surrender to the joys of spinach. Repeat ''lettuce is my friend''.
If you're really struggling, maybe I could tempt you into the world of fruit and veg with my fail-safes.
1: Strawberries dipped in melted white chocolate? (strawberries full of zinc, which all men need )
2: Sizzling tomato salsa - (tomatoes also a needful thing for men, on account of that magic lycopene which can help prevent prostrate cancer)
Shall I continue?

fullmoonfiend · 13/08/2006 20:14

Overrun, thanks! tbh, it is the 10 a day thing I really need to work on. I love food, but I just can't face food first thing in the morning, and lunch is always whatever crap is around, so there are days I struggle to fit in 5 a day. 10 is going to be a big challenge - and bete noire

Panboy · 13/08/2006 20:24

FMF - too much information!!! Am aware of the prostate cancer bit, and the zinc bit ( if I read your wink correctly) is a bit surplus to requirement these days...but I thank you for your expressions and advice..coming toward the end of 2 hours competitive ironing - don't suppose that counts???

Veg or fruit? Head says veg., tastebuds say fruit, esp. if served with some fresh single cream.....

have an appointment tomorrow with a body fascist personal trainer at 10am....suspect more than 10 mins will be acheived tomorrow, and I have a v. large grapefruit in the fruit bowl trying to intimidate me for breakfast..

how many of us are there now?? Rolling snowballs in August!!

Overrun · 13/08/2006 20:30

Not sure of numbers but we are motley crew!

Panboy · 13/08/2006 20:33

just counted 5, with a further one doing research work in Canada for three weeks..like the sound of 'motely crew'...means room for improvement...!

FrannyandZooey · 13/08/2006 20:38

Evening all

My my we are a fine looking bunch aren't we?

Is everyone feeling good about the week to come? New thread starts tomorrow, all past misdemeanours forgiven

Overrun, I do like veg, especially lightly steamed, or roasted, or in fact just raw with a nice dip, but I would eat fruit all day long if money was no object. I started when pregnant with ds and I haven't stopped yet (dp calls me The Fruit Slut )

FMF, my original idea was that we would be doing at least 10 minutes exercise each day in addition to what we normally do as part of our regular lives. However I have utterly failed to do this myself. And NQC is trying to gently wean herself off exercising so much

The idea of doing even 10 mins a day of exercise specifically to look after your body and because it feels good, still appeals to me. I like the idea of the time set aside just for me - not racing around after ds, or working, or doing stuff around the house, but just concentrating on getting my body to work better and feel better.

I think I personally will still aim for this, but how other people interpret the 'exercise every day' thing is up to you.
