Going to bed ridiculously early?? Yes, ok. I'll do that.
Infact, ~I'll do anything to crack this shit. As Malcolm X said "By any means neccesary". Need to plan for family do at weekend...and wondering how work will be tomorrow - feeling quite heady now. Been warned to not expect too much sleep tonight.

No not pathetic. Step back from judging yourself. More objectively.....
It does sound very tiring, risky and needless. I am with you.
I too undermined myself for years, and smoked to comfort myself against my own judgements of me for smoking!!!! One of Carr's "illogical prisons" surely!
Step off the gas and it will be more enabling, I know.

Morning all! Trying to not think of that fag today, CC.....when do we think it safe to do some exercising? Have stopped completely in order to acheive a sort of equilibrium in my body rather than eventful strains on it..but getting really restless feet....feelings of having a slick in my throat continues.
Cross-referencing - if anyone has the inclination, look across to "Health: Dependent drinkers club.." and see what I have done this week on boozing (say this as I did x-ref. to here from there just now). See you laters.

Sleep disturbed I think more to do with the alcohol withdrawl....and feeling pretty ropey...did notice this morning my skin looked worse than it normally does......now have been without fags for longer than at any time in 16 years. think that all nicotine will be gone by this evening...."go on..f*ck off!"....

LL, I'd like to join you ... I'm DESPERATE to stop smoking ...

Loulou000 · 04/08/2006 10:50

HUGE well done to Lottelou and Rickman for getting this far. It's really hard but you can do it.

I gave up when found out I was pregnant a few months ago. Never thought I could do it, and had tried lots of times. You will feel so happy if you get one over on the stinky fags! Go to bed early, eat your weight in creme eggs, whatever helps, it doesn't matter, just don't smoke.

Lotte, I found exercising helped a lot actually. You get those happy hormones released and it perks your mood up.

You can do it!

Lottelou · 04/08/2006 11:22

imaginaryfriend (lovely name!) - DO JOIN US!!All of this feels so much more real than a handout cd or a book - it's real people sweating over a real life change......and supporting and encouraging each other - some are ex-puffers, some still there but working their way out of it, and there is a way out FOR ALL!!
Am getting a tight chest today, and the incredibly dry mouth continues...but know this comes before all else..
Loulou000 - congrats on being pg!! "IT's a miracle, Father!"...a bit fearful of exercising until the nicotine shit has gone..disturbing the equilibrium..but may go out for a trot after work and try for that nice post-exercise glow. Check in later.

hello there you lot,
i just wanted to wish you all good luck and pass on a couple of things which helped me if that's okay? (nothing worse than advice from an ex-smoker, i know...)

apparently making sure you are taking lots of b vits (for anxiety) and vit c helps. no idea, a woman in the chemist told me and i did it and suffered no axiety giving up...

and you can look forward to watching all those anti-smoking ads without feeling any panic. i used to dive for the remote control with one hand and the lighter with the other...

and finally, here is my own special little plan which might suit some people but not others...
i had given up before but never for long, so the last time (six years ago) i really tried to analyse what i liked about smoking and discovered that a large part of it was the paraphenalia and the 'break' aspect of it.

i loved my lighter, which is ridiculous of course but i really did, it was a gorgeous silver rounded thing... and i also loved all the 'business' of smoking. the sitting down, having a coffee, taking a wee break etc etc. so i decided to replace my smoking with burning really lovely Japanese incense from space nk, which even comes in a little pack which is shaped not unlike a fag packet.

i really found it helped, because i would be able to faff with the lighter, breathe in some smoke from the incense and it required me pausing. now, it so happens that i never really smoked outside, so i was fine in that regard, but it really did work for the house.

oh, and change your drink when you go out. i used to drink wine but during my giving up smoking phase i swapped to gin and tonic so i didn't have any smoking associations.

drink lots of water, and good luck, it is MUCH easier than the 'nicorette' manufacturers would have you believe... after all they've got kids' school fees to pay so they really do not want you to give up forever, just for a while.

sometimes after a lovely winy meal and a coffee i do think that other people's cigarette smoke smells lovely, but after about a month of giving up the idea of lighting some twigs and paper on fire, putting it three inches from your face and then sucking on it will feel very weird indeed.

Lottelou · 04/08/2006 12:05

aitch71 - no please spill with the advice!! Know waht you mean aboutthe paraphenalia thing, and the oddity of setting a fire 3 ins. from your face, and so much of fagging it is so crazy!! And thanks forthe vitamin tip. About to go out for lunch to a Chinese place, eat food, with an orange juice drink and have neither booze or fags as part of the experience..just focus on who I am with and what I am eating!! This has been a long day and-a-half.......

I'm a hypnotherapist who stopped with hypnosis years ago.

One if the best tips I have is to start thinking of yourself as a non smoker rather than as a smoker trying to give up !

I work with many people to stop and hypnosis really helps with things like cravings etc. Just make sure you find someone with good training. It's not guaranteed but it has great success. Shame about Alan Carr; Life's bloomin ironic eh...

Lottelou · 04/08/2006 14:06

Finding that incredibly useful! - am doing well, but did feel the need for one dominant thought to be at the fore of my mind...this one about being a 'non-smoker' rather than a smoker trying to give up is the nearest so far......difficult to visualise at moment with slick-feeling still in throat, a tightish chest and an occassional shortness of breath - but wishing to move forward to that state of mind..feeling the dying bits of nicotine fighting back. Bastards.

Loulou000 · 04/08/2006 14:08

Really interesting tip about the incense, Aitch!

For what it's worth re. nicotine replacement, I had tried many times and found going cold turkey much easier. Just got it all over with instead of prolonging the agony, really.

Yeah, definitely still fancy a fag sometimes too, especially after a meal, but it doesn't rule my life. I often fancy a cream bun and don't have one.

Really hope the quitters are still going strong! Lots of luck and well wishes to you.

theladyvanishes · 04/08/2006 14:13

I gave up smoking almost 2yrs ago and i'll happily encourage and support anyone else who is trying to quit

Lottelou · 04/08/2006 14:53

Lady! Am seeing rickman (on patches), imaginaryfriend (puffing), and I (cold turkeying since Wednesday night) who are putting our hands up for kind words from yourselves..any others to get on board??

Rickman! - great to hear from you early evening, and doing so well as well - does that mean the patch is still in place and no fags?? And, you'd better get used to people being kind toward you, because that is all you are going to get from round here...kindnesses and warmths of concern about what we are doing, from people who know what it is like....
for me, toward the end of the second day and have avoided going out. Made a plan of what to do in the house, and how to distract myself if the little evil f*ckers start mithering (the nicotine dregs, not the kids....oh God, humour!!)..chest is easing, but some heart burn coming on(?)..dry mouth seems to be easing a bit...decided to not exercise tonight..still too shaky........how are all else? imaginaryfriend??

Ummm ... well ... I haven't exactly started yet ... But I really want to.

LOL Rickman at your story.

I'm enjoying reading your battle LL, I think you're fantastic to be kicking so many demons at once. I've recently drastically cut down on booze too. I'd love to chat with you on here some time when we're both around at the same time. I'm about to watch a DVD with dp in a minute. Called The Nude Vampire ... hmmm ... He swears it's 'tasteful' ... ???
