From Too Good To Go! Have had mixed results previously, once I got some sourdough bread, organic lamb, organic pork and lots of veg for 4 quid! But last time it was a gone off artichoke, peaches and squashy bananas. Does anyone else use it?
One bag is from the local health food shop, and one from a local cafe. Might ask for recipe suggestions later depending on what I get.

Got two bags yesterday: one from St John Bakery and one from Le Pain Quotidian. St John Bakery one was much better value, also, jesus, the amount of fresh raspberry compote in their raspberry doughnut totally tips it over into one of your five a day. Which is not what I was expecting from a doughnut. Spectacular.

I picked up my bag from the local tea room last night and had a cheese baguette, a croissant, a pain au chocolat, 3 Chelsea buns and a slice of lemon drizzle cake. From reading this thread it seems the independent places may be better than the chains, think I'll avoid the Greggs and Costa bags.

chilliesandspices · 06/08/2022 20:06

I live in a very average town and the two best places for magic bags are the family run Italian bakery on the outskirts of town (bread loaves, tear and share type loaves, individual pizza slices with various toppings) and the polish bakery in the town centre (excellent sourdough loaves, stuffed bread and pastries). During summer I bulk them out with antipasti or ploughman's style extras for quick no-cook dinners.

I agree with PP some of the bags can be disappointing with the amount of food , even though the last one I got from upper crust was good value money wise , i didn't enjoy the rye bread it was to dry ( I dont think there was anything wrong as I always find rye dry )

I got one from Starbucks on thursday for £4 , a ham and egg baguette, tuna sandwich and two different pastries , all of it was nice enough but there is not a hope in hell I would of paid the full value of around £12.50

‘I hope you like biscuits’, she said.
Sure Brenda, but that doesn’t mean I want twenty packet of digestives.

@dizzyupthegirl86 think of all the cheesecakes you can make!

Yalz · 08/08/2022 01:44

@dizzyupthegirl86 , where was your magic bag from?

You seem to have things from different stores.

NightOwl101 · 09/08/2022 17:40

It’s a place called the company shop, which basically is a shop which sells surplus stock from lots of different stores. The biscuits are actually Mcvities, I’ve just discovered on opening them.

I tried Planet Organic and Costa. Planet organic just two small tuba of warm food, but it was really yummy: dhal and mac and cheese, and black beans and rice.
Costa: two cold sarnies, croissant, choc twist and a chocolate slab type thing.

Got a bag from the local co-up late yesterday. It had a "picnic snack selection" of some mini sausages, sausage rolls, little egg things. A tub of coleslaw, a french stick, a tub of raspberries, 4 apple puff pastry things, a tub of double cream, a packet of cream crackers and a packet of dark chocolate ginger biscuits. A bit of a random selection rather than just chilled items, which was nice.

I caved. I couldn’t be bothered to cook tonight and had to go right past a costa. Inside the bag is a chocolate muffin. Three quid!

Yalz · 11/08/2022 18:57

@dizzyupthegirl86 , that’s definitely worth £3 if you have someone who will eat those things!

I’d never heard of the Company Shop. Sounds like a good place, but there isn’t one near me.

SpittinKitten · 11/08/2022 22:10

Managed to get a M&S simply food one, wont bother again. A fiver for a tomato salad, a bottle of vegetable juice, some blueberries and a really really horrible chicken roll.

DH just picked up our £10 "Movie night feast" box from a local surplus warehouse.

Well impressed with this little haul!

Nice one! I hope there are lots of people in your family or you're going to be feeling a bit sick after eating all that in one night 😜

Haha three of us this week. Plus I'm diabetic so can only have a tiny bit. I'm hoping it lasts for the full week of marvel movies we have promised DD(13) as we are working through them in order on an evening x

givemushypeasachance · 15/08/2022 11:50

I signed up for a local chain bakery one yesterday, about 15 mins walk from my house. 1:40pm pick up so walked over in the Sahara-like afternoon heat, to discover it was closed. Looked like the bakery hadn't been open at all yesterday. Guessing it was closed for staff absence or something and it defaulted to offering a magic bag, no one to cancel it. Annoying though! Asked for a refund.

I'm sure it will! Those sort of of things don't go out of date really.

I finally got my first bag today, Costa for £3. The bag contains 3 Tiffin bars. Pretty good, although I'm not the biggest fan of tuna 🤦‍♀️

I got a Soho Coffee bag a few weeks ago which wasn't too bad so decided to try a drinks wholesale place local.

Got home and was initially very impressed ... bottle of wine, 2 fruit ciders, 4 beers, 8 posh tonic waters. For £6!

Unfortunately on closer inspection almost every BBE date had been deliberately scratched off and those which hadn't been done well revealed the wine was BBE 2019 and several tonics 2 years ago.

I mean I'm all for avoiding waste, generally use sight/smell do judge if foods ok and know most canned or bottled goods have a decent life after the dates past. But this seemed sneaky and to fob people off with massively out of date stuff doesn't feel in the spirit of the app.

Tonics and beer were flat Confused I'm not sure the wine will be great for my stomach.

Needless to say I gave them a low rating.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/08/2022 10:48

I'd complain about that one, that's not on at all. Might be too late now, but TGTG would probably give you a refund. @tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz

@CakeCrumbs44 Envy

When I got a Costa one, I got 3 toasties and that was it. You appear to have 4 toasties, a fruit pot and the three tiffins.

And I love a tuna melt panini and am happy to freeze stuff like that or eat it the day after the use by date. And I'm still waiting for any sniff of coffee shop cake.

Thanks ... I may just do that. I can't imagine I'm the first/only one.

NormalForNuneaton · 17/08/2022 13:10

DD picked up another Parsons bakery one yesterday which, like the last one, was great value and had lots in:

2 loaves of unsliced bread (1 sourdough) which I sliced and put in the freezer, a filled baguette, pack of 5 doughnuts, 2 sausage rolls, a pasty, a croissant and a cake that I didn't even see as DD ate it on the way home.

Not the healthiest 😆but it kept those with hollow legs happy!
