From Too Good To Go! Have had mixed results previously, once I got some sourdough bread, organic lamb, organic pork and lots of veg for 4 quid! But last time it was a gone off artichoke, peaches and squashy bananas. Does anyone else use it?
One bag is from the local health food shop, and one from a local cafe. Might ask for recipe suggestions later depending on what I get.

@Cookie79 that's really good ! Fruit veg and bread that's got to knock a few pounds of your next shopping bill.

DeanStockwelll · 31/07/2022 12:24

I got my first magic bag tonight from our local spar!

pack of 4 donuts
1 cheese and onion quiche
4 sausage rolls
a tub of single cream
2 poppy seed deli rolls
1 individual chicken curry pie

fairly happy with it as a first go although quite a lot more “stodge” than I thought there would be.

I’ll be putting a few things straight in the freezer but I’m looking for some ideas on how to use up the single cream…
anyone got any recipes or tips?

TIA!

Take a pack of my prawns, some of the parsley and the rocket and make a pasta sauce!

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 02/08/2022 20:45

Same flipping spar have cancelled at the last minute again. Won't be bothering with them again.

DeanStockwelll · 02/08/2022 22:15

I've had two orders cancelled from my local co-op in the past five days which is annoying. After last night's cancelled I looked around at what was available in the next hour - ended up driving 25 mins across town to a Papa John's that was offering a freshly cooked XXL pizza for £3.99. It's a right faff to get to but can't complain for that price! You don't get to pick toppings - this had tomatoes and onions on. It was tasty. There are other PJs much closer to me but I never see them on the app, must be like some others a franchise by franchise thing and not all are signed up.

So, I now have 16lbs of clotted cream in the freezer. This week I'll be mostly eating........

DeanStockwelll · 03/08/2022 22:45

Oooh @woopdedoodle you could make your own butter with some of that.

Omg where was that magic bag from?

Peckhampalace · 04/08/2022 09:40

My first food bag, from Mexican food importers. Really helpful staff told us what to do with them.

Oh god I’d be all over those like a rash!

dizzyupthegirl86 · 04/08/2022 11:07

I’m trying to have a break from these bags for a bit, I’ve got too much food crammed in my freezer! I’ve even cancelled my planned gousto box for next week to try to use some of this stuff!

We only tried it once. Everything was vile "fast food" like things that were really unhealthy and tasted bad. One item was something you had to cook in a micro oven and we don't have one.

A food distributer in the midlands. I personally like the factory outlets better than the shops.

The trick is to buy magic bags from cafes and shops you already like, or think you'd like. If you get a magic bag from, eg, the Pasty Shop when you don't like their (absolutely horrible and tasteless) pastys, then of course their magic bag will be a disappointment. (I've had fresh-baked artisan sourdough from St John's Bakery and I've also had prepackaged, refrigerated toasties from Costa. Each to me have their place - in the toasties' case, that place was in the freezer until DS came home and wanted an easy snack.)

I got one and the value of the yellow tickets was less than what I paid for the bag. I got 4 things, 2 bags of salad at 38p each, a sandwich at 50p and a small block of cheese that was down to £1. I paid nearly £4 for the bag.

Haven't done it since.

SushiSuave · 04/08/2022 17:24

Saw this thread this morning, downloaded the app and have a bag waiting to be collected tomorrow afternoon from a local tea room - I'm ridiculously excited!

Every shop has their own way of calculating it, but strictly - it will be done on the full price value of the food, as the "original price" you see struck through on the app. So say there's a chain of bakeries here that go bags marked as £12 struck through with you paying £3.99 - the original price of the food should be to a value of £12. If you think it's not, you can validly complain to the app and hopefully get some money back.

With groceries ones sometimes you get lucky and get foods that aren't shortdated and yellow stickered, and other times it is all stuff from the reduced section. I've had some from a few places like petrol stations where it's not the best food, it's all short dated, and there isn't much of it. So I haven't bothered going back to them again. But other times I strike lucky and get say a Morrisons paper bag full of several boxes of meat, loads of fruit, veg, deli stuff all with fine dates and think wow jackpot.

minesalargered · 04/08/2022 17:48

ArcheryAnnie - absolutely this... I'm not a huge Gregg's fan, but have a 21/22 year old at home, and some chicken bakes and a few sweet treats really help as they snack a lot, mainly healthy, but sometimes not. If it were just myself, I wouldn't get a bag from there?!

That said - I've had a lovely veggie pasta salad today for lunch today from one of their bags, a falafel rice salad earlier in the week! And a super tuna salad baguette last week.

You can't really be disappointed as it's the luck of the draw. I've never had a bag worth less than I paid, but would I choose its exact contents for every single item, perhaps not.

This works and it doesn’t. If you buy a bag from a supermarket they sell such a wide variety of products that they are sure to sell some foods you don’t like. I got a bag from planet organic recently and love their food. But my bag was full of processed vegan meat substitutes which none of us eat, so that went straight in the bin. My two bakery bags have been the best because you can’t much go wrong with pastries, sandwiches and bread but generally the best stuff doesn’t make it into the bags as it sells out during the day.

I've come to the conclusion that I've been diddled compared to others with this.

I've had Costa, Leon, Nero, Starbucks and Pret and mostly got 3 items, never more than 4 and once only 2 from Leon, which I complained about and got a refund.

Others seem to have had 5+ things, including cakes, which I've never had.

Toby Carvery was also rubbish, a tiny amount of turkey and a load of terrible mash and gravy.

Wasabi and greggs were better but I'm a bit fed up with it now, because it's been a lot of toasties, which are no effort to make at home and even at TGTG prices it's still cheaper to make at home.

Your experience is similar to mine. Majority of bags had three items. Had one bag that was particularly good from a local bakery that had five. And a very full bag from an organic grocer but when I got home realised that it was all rotten.

ScribblingPixie · 05/08/2022 15:32

I had an absolutely brilliant bag from a local delivery company - it was packed with premium pasta meals, kefir, cherries, grapes, yogurts and heritage tomatoes, all a couple of days before sell-by. I totted it up to be £30 worth of food and it was £5. Other people must have had the same experience because it's 4.7 on the reviews and the bags are now going in literally two minutes. I can't believe I'll ever get one that good again.
