I enjoyed the last Gousto thread but it seems to have disappeared so thought I would start a new one.
Anyone had a box this week?
I have had the Goan style basa and spinach curry which was really good. Also had the pork with bubble and squeak mash and the sesame hoisin chicken. All have been lovely so far. Smile Just the Thai red curry to go now which I am looking forward to.

Orders for this week are Makhani Chicken, Sage roasted pork steak, Chicken, mushroom and tarragon spaghetti but won’t use the mushrooms with this as my son doesn’t like them cooked (might cook them separately then add) and Crispy chicken wraps.

Just found this thread!
We've been getting gusto for a few months now and I love it. Have paused our orders for the next few weeks though as nothing really appealed. This week though we have coming:

Hoisin pork and mushroom rice bowl
Black pepper chicken Dahl (had it before, it's a fave)
Mustard and chive pork with potatoes
Mexican lean beef, rice and beans

We had the Chinese feast with belly pork tonight, it was really lovely! If anyone else is making it this week I would advise you to go easy with the ‘generous’ pinches of salt in the recipe and don’t add all of the chilli flakes unless you like it really hot!

I’ve got the haddock gremolata fish cakes in the oven now. Apart from they sent cod rather than haddock! I’ve never had a sub before and can’t see anything on the app about it.

Report
LemonViolet · 08/02/2022 07:06

Just to say - the fishcakes were a disaster, and I don’t think we can blame the cod! But they were baked in the oven, even on baking parchment with oil as specified, but they were still stuck to the parchment, so not possible to lift them off intact, and we just ended up with piles of fishy potatoey floury mush. Not madly appetising. Would not recommend.

However I reported the fish mixup to Gousto on the app and got instant £5 credit as an apology, so there’s that. I won’t give up on them yet. But no more fishcakes.

I have used Gousto boxes in the past. I tend to avoid the meat as it’s not free range and the fish because it’s farmed in Cambodia and Turkey, or places like that I think. God knows what the conditions are like there. Also all the plastic packaging is really bad for the environment. Many recipes are very high fat.
I must look the recipes up and tweak them a bit for myself.

Report
pinkchampagne1 · 08/02/2022 07:40

I don’t often go for the very high fat recipes. They have cut down a lot on the plastic too.
We find it has really changed the way we cook. We had got stuck in a rut of cooking the same old meals each week. Now, even when we don’t have a box we often recreate some of the recipes.

@AwakeAgainNaturally I agree about the meat, the chicken is slimy and tastes funny, especially when reheated. I try to stick the the veggie recipes now.

For anyone else concerned about the plastic, the Coop have a soft plastic recycling scheme where you can recycle most of the packaging like the spice packets and lids.

Seeing as if I wasn’t using Gousto right now I’d be mostly eating takeaways, snacks or not at all, I really don’t mind all those criticisms of my personal choice that you’ve posted @AwakeAgainNaturally. If I had the capacity to be “tweaking recipes myself” I wouldn’t be relying on paying a service to do the recipe planning and shopping for me!

I don’t eat pork or chicken though. Lamb is much harder to farm intensively so the welfare is inherently higher. And they’re tastier anyway :-) so far I’ve had 2-3 veggie/vegan options each box, usually 1 fish, occasionally 1 lamb.

Choices for the rest of this week are

Teriyaki tofu
Nutty 3-veg curry
Meat-free harissa meatballs

Looking forward to making my own teriyaki sauce.

That’s really useful to know. Thank you.

Not intending to criticise. I’ve ordered the boxes myself . I just struggle to find enough recipes that aren’t meat and fish based or high in fat.

We had the sage crusted pork which was very nice.

Yes I agree that the packaging isn't great, but it's really got me out of a cooking rut, and I'm enjoying trying new recipes.

I keep the recipe cards in the ring binder; and write notes on the card for when I cook it again (like- add more veg, or use more/less chilli).

They've told me they're increasing the price a bit, but I've also has several 20% off emails recently, so it's not too pricey.
I don't use all the spices each time (picky kids) so I've got a stock to use for when I recreate the recipes.

After deliberately having a week off I went to do my order last night and I had left it too late and loads was sold out including the Chinese duck feast that I had my eye on so that’s another week off! Is anyone else getting that, it looks lovely.

The duck feast was lovely, it was just like takeaway crispy duck! And so easy to make.
I've got the other Chinese banquet tonight, with the pork.

One of my faves is the breaded chicken burger with bacon jam.
I love the 3 cheese bake, it's a good option when I want to cut out meat and I can stick some meat on the side for DH. If you find it sweet, maybe leave out the sugar it tells you to add?

We really enjoyed the chicken makhani with cucumber salad, although next time we might serve it with a bit of rice, as the naan bread wasn't very filling.

We have had the chicken makhani before. It was tasty but I had to add rice for my husband

Well my box has been cancelled at the last minute due to ‘operational problems’ so nothing till next week. Am racking my brains to think of something to have tonight without hitting the shops. Hope this doesn’t happen again.

Oh no, that’s rubbish! Have they offered you some money off your next box for the inconvenience?

I've just had a few trial boxes.

Katsu chicken burger was OK but the curry mayo was so vinegarry. I skipped it and just had a plain chicken burger.

Sage crusted pork steaks were good but always find pork gets dry. Plum gravy wasn't popular with DH.

Chicken makhani i really enjoyed, I did do rice to go with it.

Today was mango chicken skewers (yummy) and sweet potato rice (OK, bit plain). I added some cucumber and mint to the coriander yogurt and used fat free yogurt making it a fairly healthy choice.

Can't remember what the next one is! Something with Bulgaria wheat?

We have only just finished last weeks meals so haven’t had another box this week. Have some nice meals coming next week though.

It was a bit bland really, could have done with something to give it a bit more oomph.

I never order the pasta options, not sure why, I think just hyper-self-critical that if I’m eating pasta I should be able to manage it myself, which is daft, don’t know why pasta would be any different to all the other meals I’m happily choosing through them.

Had the harissa meat-free meatballs the other night and they were really tasty, would definitely recommend.

Today I’m having teriyaki tofu.

Whoever mentioned not finding veggie options - half the menu is veggie!

@snaxinyourslacks the fishcakes were a disaster for me! Did you have haddock as we were supposed to not cod? How did you bake them that they didn’t just fall apart into a floury, gloopy mess when you got them out of the oven?
