I enjoyed the last Gousto thread but it seems to have disappeared so thought I would start a new one.
Anyone had a box this week?
I have had the Goan style basa and spinach curry which was really good. Also had the pork with bubble and squeak mash and the sesame hoisin chicken. All have been lovely so far. Smile Just the Thai red curry to go now which I am looking forward to.

We were getting the boxes for a while before Christmas but the fussy kids turned their noses up at almost everything. After a break over Christmas I switched to a 2 person box so we could try some more adventurous things but then got fed up of cooking two different meals every night so we’re having a week off this week.

I’m just going through the folder of previous weeks recipe cards for some inspiration. Getting some of the ingredients is a bit tricky, the only chicken stock powder I can find online is in massive 1kg tubs and the liquid stock concentrate I used to buy seems to have been discontinued so I guess it will have to be cubes.

Tomato Frito is a Spanish fried tomato sauce with onion and garlic. The only place I can find it is in bulk from Amazon and I don’t know if I want to buy that much! I think I’ll use either passata or a carton of finely chopped tomatoes with some added tomato purée.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 24/01/2022 11:20

Thank you, nothing wildly special then! The recipe had some garlic paste anyway so easy enough just to add some onions and a small tin of tomatoes!

pinkchampagne1 · 24/01/2022 18:34

We have just had the red Thai chicken curry. It was really tasty

Tonight we had the Sticky Chinese pork with sesame pak choi. The pork was lovely, I didn't enjoy the pak choi (I usually do, so it could be a chemo thing for me at the moment, it does affect my tase=te buds)

Last night we had a recipe with the vegetable stock powder in. It's definitely not Marigold/Bouilion. I'll attach a photo- Gousto powder is in the bowl. It's not as salty and tastes tomatoey.. I think.

We had the Goan fish curry. Massive thumbs up from everyone including two teens who couldn't work out whether it was fish or chicken. I'd never had Basa before. Very tasty!

We loved the Goan fish curry too!

Made the garlic & herb stuffed chicken tonight. It tasted fine, but the portions of chicken were tiny! It was ok for me but nowhere near enough for my 14-year-old son. It seemed to be half a chicken breast each! Plenty of mash & green beans though. Photo looks a mess, sorry!

I had the same one as you tonight, @WeeFae. Enjoyed it but nothing to write home about.

WeeFae · 25/01/2022 19:11

Did you also get teeny chicken portions?

JengaCupboard · 25/01/2022 19:15

Lamb meatloaf from 2 weeks ago was excellent. Lemon chicken not great. Also this weeks yellow curry advises adding chopped lemongrass which I never do as it tastes like twig texture lemon cleaner… just bash and add whole.

Steak with mustard sauce and garlic and rosemary potatoes tonight. This is week three and I’d give it 7.5/10 so far. I prep all ingredients first before cooking or it’s too stressful!!

purplewatermelons · 25/01/2022 20:07

I can't seem to be able to add photos but tonight we have lentil dhal with crispy onions and mushroom, and coriander chutney and it was so nice!

We only started Gousto at couple of weeks ago but I've been impressed so far. We don't eat meat but eat fish so have the fish and veggie recipes. We generally love the Asian/Indian style dishes and find they are the nicest. The sticky tamarind aubergine and the Goan fish curry were lovely.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 25/01/2022 20:27

I’ve had that lentil dahl, it was lovely! Even better the next day too (I live on my own so eat the second portion for lunch or dinner the next day)
Spicy peanut chicken noodles for me tonight. It was nice and I’d make it again, not too faffy - but I’ve not been wowed by the chicken this week. The size of the chicken pieces are all over the place so some cook quicker than others.
So far, I’ve never ordered the same recipe twice… do you all reorder your favourites for the ease of ingredients measured out?

TooWicked · 25/01/2022 20:31

Lemon chicken for us tonight, it was meh, not bad but not amazing, I wouldn't order it again.

The crispy coconut jumbo prawn tacos we had last night were delicious but we had to add some sweet chilli sauce to the tacos, the pickled chillis alone didn't give them enough oomph!

TooWicked · 25/01/2022 20:34

We have a few favourites that we reorder every few weeks, and yes it is totally for the ease of having the food delivered to our door, and everything being measured out and ready to go.

LadyLazarus40 · 25/01/2022 20:34

We had the smoky chorizo cod with potatoes and kale tonight - we’ve had it before - really delicious!

Sidge · 25/01/2022 20:39

I switched from Hello Fresh to Gousto recently.

Tonight we had the smoked basa potato topped pie with garlicky greens and it was really good actually.

Last night was the king prawn farfalle arrabbiata. It was ok but nothing special.

I’m enjoying the different recipes, HF started to get a bit samey and repetitive.

purplewatermelons · 25/01/2022 21:30

Ooh we have the coconut prawn tacos this week too. And I ordered the smoky chorizo cod without realising it had chorizo in it! My DH eats meat so I'll just do mine without. Good to know they are both nice Smile

blitzen · 26/01/2022 09:06

@WeeFae we got one normal and one small so chopped a bit off the big one to make it fair!

clare8allthepies · 27/01/2022 13:08

After deliberately having a week off I went to do my order last night and I had left it too late and loads was sold out including the Chinese duck feast that I had my eye on so that’s another week off! Is anyone else getting that, it looks lovely.

pinkchampagne1 · 27/01/2022 17:14

Have you checked different days for next week? I thought I had missed out on the Korean stew as appeared sold out for most days this week but I checked Thursday and there was one available

We had the coconut prawn tacos last night and they were great. I added some sweet chilli sauce as suggested. The prawns were huge!

TragicMuse · 27/01/2022 17:27

I didn't get a box this week as I wasn't that taken with the recipes. But I'm doing the lentil cottage pie - we had that a few weeks ago and it was really nice! Comforting and easy.

pinkchampagne1 · 27/01/2022 19:44

We have just had the fruity Moroccan chicken stew and it was lovely…so full of flavour.

Envy I have fond memories of Gousto's reduced price trial. Unfortunately, I cannot bring myself to pay full price but it was right up there among recipe box schemes

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 27/01/2022 19:49

Lentil cottage pie was lovely. Healthy and filling too. Had halloumi, couscous and orange salad which was good. Mild chicken curry tomorrow for the fussy 7 year old. Bought naan and poppadoms from lidl to stretch it out for 3 of us.
