I used to have a BeRo recipie book and I cannot find it anywhere. I want to make the strawberry jam muffins. Could anyone link me to a pic if they have it?

It's even more bizarre when you know I'm on the sofa in the living room and not in the kitchen 😂😂

I was flicking through it a few days ago and never put it back.

Apolloanddaphne · 06/04/2020 13:57

Mine is right by me too as I was researching which cake to make next!

They sound nice, I’ve never noticed them in mine before. We usually have coconut lime loaf 🤤

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 06/04/2020 13:58

Hi OP,
I’ve checked my 41st edition and it’s not on there. I can give you the regular cupcake recipe if any good.

Wired4sound · 06/04/2020 13:59

I’ve got my grandmas Bero book - I used to laugh at the fact it had a recipe for “emergency bread” in it! Granny wisely used to frown at me. I’m glad she’s not around to see the current times.

Enjoy the buns!

Nice one Soup Dragon. Happy baking everybody!

Apolloanddaphne · 06/04/2020 14:00

My DM had an original one. She gave me a copy when I got married in 1985 and I bought two copies for my DDs to give them when they went to uni. I can't find my one so I now use DD2s copy. It's the best baking book.

INeedNewShoes · 06/04/2020 14:01

What a coincidence! Mine’s currently open on the scones page Smile

Lordfrontpaw · 06/04/2020 14:03

Mine looks like this one - it was from when mum was at school (around WW2 time).

The little girl was called Margery and her baking days just wouldn't be the same without BERO. I love the hints and tips - first look to your oven...

The recipes are less 'eggy' and fatty than modern ones (well apart from the lard) not sure if it was to do with the war or because they wanted you to use more flour!

Does anyone have a version with Pink Slice in? Mine does not but I read it mentioned one of the versions has it!

Lordfrontpaw · 06/04/2020 14:04

They are the best recipes. I wonder if they have any of the same ones as from the older books? Shall we pick a recipe and compare - say Madeira cake?

JoeySpecial · 06/04/2020 14:04

Oh I think I have this !you have inspired me!

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 06/04/2020 14:08

I'm still so sad that I lost my mums be-ro book, she got it in the 70s, and it had all the bits of flour and butter dotted throughout from changing pages while cooking.

She passed away and dad had it in the house, but when he got remarried they did a charity shop run of all the books not realising that anyone else would have wanted the book.

SoupDragon · 06/04/2020 14:08

Mine has neither pink slice nor emergency bread.

My mum had a copy and I bought mine for the almond biscuits.

Boomchikawowwow · 06/04/2020 14:12

My muffins are already in! I need to order another book. Mine was pretty old but I love it. I think I'm going to make flapjack next.

Used mine (40th Ed) yesterday for melting moments. I also have the 35th which has emergency bread but no pink slice.

SoupDragon · 06/04/2020 14:23

Mine is the 40th edition too. I bought it when I learned from MN that it was still available :)

ADreamOfGood · 06/04/2020 14:32

@Lordfrontpaw that's the version we had!
Please could you post the tea loaf recipe?
I would love to make that.

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/04/2020 14:32

I bought my 40th following a MN thread too, decided my 35th was a bit out of date.

evilharpy · 06/04/2020 14:42

Mine is sitting here on the dining room table beside me as I was sending someone else a recipe this morning. I have the 40th edition (no pink slice) and also a (probably) 1950s one that's missing its cover so not sure which edition (from googling I think it's 24th) but it was my husband's grandma's and I inherited it when she died as well as her handwritten recipes. Also no pink slice.

evilharpy · 06/04/2020 14:43

Most of the pages of mine have stuck together at some point because it's been so heavily used.
