I used to have a BeRo recipie book and I cannot find it anywhere. I want to make the strawberry jam muffins. Could anyone link me to a pic if they have it?

From a very grotty 17th edition, excuse the stains (COPY from the mid 70s and been used constantly be me, MIL, BIL and DS - even DH made me a cake from it)!

Are melting moments made with Trex, and rolled in parts with a cherry on top? I never knew they were from the BeRo book (I have it written on half a birthday card but my grandma!).

We have the (rival?) McDougall's ones, but mine is heavily annotated because they changed the measurements for a lot of recipes between my mum's version and mine, and I don't think they all work as well. The gingerbread loaf is lovely.

I can’t see anywhere the print dates of each edition - maybe one a year? So 17th is 1939/40?

Lordfrontpaw · 07/04/2020 10:30

And I still don’t know why the Madeira cake had a ‘C’ decoration on the top of it.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 07/04/2020 10:31

Rolled in oats even. Proofread PaM!

Lordfrontpaw · 07/04/2020 10:32

Yes they are melting moments - I loved them when I was little!

ExpletiveDelighted · 07/04/2020 10:55

We always do the melting moments rolled in crushed cornflakes, did it this way as a child and still love them.

The pink slice I'm referring to is the Sunderland delicacy of shortbread with egg yolk in with jam sandwich between and atomic pink icing on top!

Mine is the 34th edition too. I assumed it was early 70s as it mentioned that Britain was changing to the metric system. Mine was from my Grandma; she wrote the recipe in the back as it was in her edition but not this one.

I've just noticed that my 35th Ed has hot cross buns in it (missing from my 40th). I might have to try them this week.

I think I would have bought the 35th some time in the late 80s/early 90s. It has metric measurements first.

@soupdragon thank you!! That's really helpful. I'd love to get a copy of this book!

SoupDragon · 07/04/2020 14:58

The 41st edition is available on their website.

Apolloanddaphne · 07/04/2020 18:11

I made the spiced chocolate cake but without the spice. I've seen prettier cakes but I am sure it will taste good.

Anyone a fan of coffee kisses? They are my absolute favourite but my family are also partial to dropped scones (lots of butter essential) and Welsh cakes.

Loving this thread! My parents always used the bero book then my grandma gave me one when I left for uni.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 07/04/2020 21:30

I'm planning to make coffee kisses tomorrow, really hope I like them as much as I did 30 years ago! Has anyone made the chicken and leek pie from the choux pastry section? I can't imagine it but have a leek to use up.

Mary1935 · 07/04/2020 22:09

I’ve just order this book - mn is great!!!

ExpletiveDelighted · 07/04/2020 22:19

Coming back to the pink slice, I was thinking yesterday that I had made something similar once, just found it in my recipe folder.

Coffee kisses sound very like the Hungarian chocolate biscuits in the McDougall's book (only with coffee, not cocoa). They sound lovely!

OldGreyBoots · 08/04/2020 04:53

We have the 39th edition here, well used and stuck together in places! Rich coconut tartlets are my favourite, though we adapt the recipe to make one big tart Grin
Think my mum got her banana and walnut loaf recipe from there too, and it's tied for first place of all the baked goods. I'm typically a "more is more" person when it comes to cakes, and love a heap of buttercream or icing, but both of those recipes are simple and glorious.

Curlyshabtree · 08/04/2020 05:50

I used one just yesterday! It was my great aunt’s. I made a steamed apple suet pudding at my DF’s request. I reckoned I hadn’t had one for about 35 years!
My DM still swears by some of the recipes.

MyOtherProfile · 08/04/2020 06:23

Oh wow we had this! In fact I may still have it. Will look today. Like the sound of the spice chocolate cake.

MyOtherProfile · 08/04/2020 06:30

Could anyone please post the recipe for it?

SoupDragon · 08/04/2020 07:35

Lordfrontpaw · 08/04/2020 08:19

Can anyone please post a new version of their Madeira cake? I wonder if it’s the same as the old one.

Thank you!
