I used to have a BeRo recipie book and I cannot find it anywhere. I want to make the strawberry jam muffins. Could anyone link me to a pic if they have it?

I'm going to carry my book around with me at all times 😂

That Coconut Line Loaf sounds amazing but does it really suggest putting all the ingredients in the bowl together? No creaming of sugar and fat etc? It doesn't seems right? Surely the Be-Ro book isn't suggesting an electric mixer?!

3 eggs and no milk? Hmmmm maybe that’s why I find ‘new’ recipes too eggy!

Lordfrontpaw · 08/04/2020 09:54

I love this intro. Can you imagine this flying today??

I'm expecting my new one soon. Excited!
Are the new recipes just as good and do they have most of the same recipes?

Lordfrontpaw · 08/04/2020 10:10

I’ve just compared the madeira one with my 17th edition and same dry ingredients but 3 eggs instead of 2 eggs and some milk. I’m sure they don’t use much lard in the new one!

PurpleBlueAnemone · 08/04/2020 10:16

I have a Good Housekeeping cookbook from the 50s and its full of cake recipes. There's a separate section for them as well as being included in the main bit.
Lots of lard.
Lots of boiling of veg. For ages.
It's hilarious and terrifying.
I bought it in a second hand bookshop because I remembered my mothers copy so clearly. Hers was an earlier edition and had recipes that used dried egg.

SoupDragon · 08/04/2020 10:17

That intro!! 😂😂

Oh dear, what is pudding spice do you think?
And 2oz of chocolate but no cocoa? I presume the cake is not actually very chocolatey? (Though from soupy's recipe, if that picture is the same cake it doesn't look very chocolatey either)

ArriettyJones · 08/04/2020 11:33

I’m pretty sure pudding spice is another term for mixed spice.

AdaColeman · 08/04/2020 11:36

Yes, pudding spice is another name for mixed spice.

@PurpleBlueAnemone That photo makes me so nostalgic. My mum had the same Good Housekeeping book. I used to love poring through it.

juneybean · 08/04/2020 14:18

@ExpletiveDelighted thank you for the pink jam slice recipe!

LabStaff · 08/04/2020 18:03

Can someone possibly post the milk chocolate cake recipe?

LabStaff · 08/04/2020 18:07

And is there a recipe for Welsh cakes? I'd love to try to make them 😋.

FairNotFair · 09/04/2020 09:56

@LabStaff Here's the milk chocolate cake recipe, plus the BEST icing to use (inside and on top - it's quite runny so you kind of pour it on the top and it sets very glossily Smile)

  • Sorry about the chocolate marks - it's the centenary version so it's seen a few spills in its time!
WednesdaySpinner · 09/04/2020 10:52

I also have the centenary version but haven't used it since being diagnosed as coeliac - I just look through it wistfully, even at the tuna and egg pasties norbert23! Has anyone tried to use gluten free flour in these recipes? My usual go to now is hummingbird bakery and they advise to use the same amount as you would with your usual flour but it would be good to hear if anyone has successfully tried it with these recipes? I would love to starting making some of these again.

LabStaff · 09/04/2020 18:07

Thanks @FairNotFair! I really want to make this.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 09/04/2020 19:35

I have two, 39th and 40th editions! Think I must have mislaid the first one and ordered another and then it turned up. My mum had 34th edition (and in fact I think she had at least one other one too). Used mine today to make rhubarb and ginger crumble (for the topping anyway), which was delicious! Also I put glace cherries on the shopping list for DH as I've been getting cravings for Melting Moments lately 😋 so hopefully he'll be able to pick some up when he's getting the "essentials"!

PurpleBlueAnemone · 09/04/2020 21:08

Is there a way to print out pics that are posted?

MyOtherProfile · 09/04/2020 23:06

I wondered that too purple

managedmis · 10/04/2020 02:46

Does anyone see a recipe for something called Brighton sandwich in their BeRo books? My grandma used to make it and it was lush
