Just had a craving for Coronation chicken, made it for my DTeens ....Everyone has gone mad for it.
Made me think.....in these times of quinoa, butternut squash and halloumi (which I love) what retro food do you still serve?

Me?
I love a retro curry with raisins.
Can’t beat chicken Kiev.
And at a party I once served a tin foil wrapped grapefruit with cheddar and pineapple on cocktail sticks (like my mother used to serve) ironic obv, but it went down a storm.

As a kid I used to enjoy making Sunday's pud from either a Greens cheesecake mix or a Birds lemon meringue pie packet. Used to love treacle sponge and bread and butter pud too!

At school they used to make these big trays of vanilla sponge cake with white icing and sprinkles I've been looking online for similar recipes to recreate it at home. the sponge used to be lovely, they did a chocolate one too always preferred the vanilla one though.

As a child my special treat ( just me and Mum) during the school holidays was a birds eye beefburger sat in the middle of a plate. Then heinz baked beans with a teaspoon of curry powder in ,a few spoonsfuls around the burger and around that a circle of boiled rice !

This thread has made me smile....

Re all those mourning about Findus Crispy Pancakes, I saw a River Cottage episode where they all tried to recreate the idea behind it, but homemade and better. I filed it away to try myself, but haven't yet, but this is the good food web page for the recipe.

I WILL be trying this eventually, but in the meantime, for those with a hankering....

Yes to a lot of these things. I will also add rum baba's. You used to be able to get these from most bakeries and supearkets but I haven't seen them for years.

I adored the sweetie necklaces when I was a kid - the ones of tiny little pastel coloured rings on an elastic thread.
Flying saucers are also a favourite, but still quite easy to get hold of now.
Tinned ravioli and spaghetti bolognaise
White bread. I grew up in the 70s with a mother who lovingly baked us stoneground wholemeal loves in the aga, and all we craved was Sunblest...she must have thought we were the most ungrateful brats.

Apple fluff (also know as Apple snow)
Apple purée mixed into egg white with sugar and lemon zest. Settles into two layers. Unbelievably delicious.

Yeah, sorry about that. I came across this thread when I was doing an advanced search for something else. I was daft and didn't notice it was such an old thread. Blush
