Just had a craving for Coronation chicken, made it for my DTeens ....Everyone has gone mad for it.
Made me think.....in these times of quinoa, butternut squash and halloumi (which I love) what retro food do you still serve?

Me?
I love a retro curry with raisins.
Can’t beat chicken Kiev.
And at a party I once served a tin foil wrapped grapefruit with cheddar and pineapple on cocktail sticks (like my mother used to serve) ironic obv, but it went down a storm.

Warburton's milk roll bread.

It was a round loaf of white bread, sliced thinly. Really soft.

Was gorgeous. Especially as sandwiches or toast with butter.

This is like my childhood!

A lot of these foods are still available, but not all - I've only seen one variety of crispy pancake which might be cheese. But get thee to Farmfoods because a lot of this stuff is there!

Fray Bentos pies - not as good as I remember tbh
Vesta - like me as a child, DD loved making the crispy noodles when I got one!

That hot crunch pudding - I'd forgotten about that completely, it was lovely - why did they stop it?

We still have Angel Delight occasionally, and I buy the packet of Birds Trifle and then forget to make it (not a problem in the past as no best before dates - packet in cupboard = food).

I rediscovered corn beef hash from a similar foods-from-the-past thread and it was lovely. I must restock my cupboard with the emergency tin now!

I may have to make some Angel Delight tonight!

Gooseygoosey12345 · 11/07/2018 17:41

I still eat most of this stuff! But I had a findus crispy pancake a week or so ago and it was horrendously bad, I used to love those as a kid! Totally ruined the memory for me

MrsJayy · 11/07/2018 18:02

It is a sad day when crispy pancakes are ruined

Shampooeeee · 11/07/2018 18:08

Ooh I'd forgotten about Milk Roll. Best bread ever!

There was some sort of chocolate mint pudding at school which was delicious.

eggncress · 11/07/2018 18:08

I had a findus crispy a few weeks ago... I even got excited at seeing them in the shop. But it tasted like cardboardSad
I’m sure they didn’t used to be like that !?

Takfujimoto · 11/07/2018 18:26

You can still find milk roll in some shops here, but no Mighty White 😔.

Can you tell how much I miss it? 😂

Takfujimoto · 11/07/2018 18:29

Finders crispy pancakes and faggots always smelt like dog food to me 🤢

I always traded my pancakes for my sisters potato waffles!

Riotgrrrrrl · 11/07/2018 18:47

Sad news about the findus crispy pancakes being horrible now Sad I bet they're full of palm oil.
(I'm surprised people think angel delight is still nice as I thought it was awful now that's full of palm oil)

I remembered something else today. I used to love beans and mini sausages in a tin. I'm a vegetarian now so I can't/won't be having them.

And Heinz Baked Beans pizzas! They were the dogs!

misskatamari · 11/07/2018 19:04

Definitely prawn cocktail - my mum always did it as a start at Christmas, so yummy. She used to make a cracking corned beef hash too, wish I had the recipe. And a lemon cheesecake that had something called dream topping in it and I think lemon jelly. I need to root around as I'm sure I have the recipe somewhere. It was flipping lovely!

Loved findus crispy pancakes as a kid. I remember about ten years ago dh has never had them, so we got some as I was raving about how amazing they were, and they were absolutely rank :(

Vienetta always felt like a super posh treat too. Still love it now (and the mint on is amazing on warm chocolate brownies!)

misskatamari · 11/07/2018 19:05

And omg yes, mini kievs! Chicken Kievs are yum but the mini ones are amazing!

Shadow01 · 11/07/2018 19:09

Riotgrrrl - I’m pretty sure you can get beans and veggie sausages.

misskatamari · 11/07/2018 19:15

Heinz used to do a baked beans pizza as well, I loved that

BikeRunSki · 11/07/2018 19:19

Tesco and Suma both make beans and veggie sausages.

luckycat007 · 11/07/2018 19:24

Riotgrrrrrl · 11/07/2018 19:28

Oooh do they? I may have to look for the beans and veggie sausages!

Thanks Grin

MrsJayy · 11/07/2018 19:28

Mini Kievs lava rolled in breadcrumbs more like Grin

Azzizam · 11/07/2018 19:45

Maxi-Bon ice creams. Divine

violeticecream · 11/07/2018 19:56

Sliced roast beef with gravy in a foil tray - think it was birds eye. Loved it with tinned peas and smash!
Ham and cheese toast topper. Lush!

usernamealreadytaken · 11/07/2018 20:05

@LesAnya you can get Jubbly lollies in Tesco (other supermarkets are also available) and I think they are what you are looking for. They used to be called something else, but I can't remember what!

I miss Texan bars, Vesta curries and mince and tatties that my mum used to make. Anyone else remember boil in the bag cod in parsley or butter sauce? Drooooool

LemonysSnicket · 11/07/2018 20:09

I love coronation chicken and wasn't born until 95! It is amazing!

And @NotUmbongoUnchained they sell screwballs at Iceland! £1 for 6!

OMG mushroom and herb pasta n sauce

MrsJayy · 11/07/2018 20:19

I still buy boil in the bag fish because it is just me that likes it but I buy Youngs because Birds eye portion is teeny tiny

hedgebackwards · 11/07/2018 20:36

Remember the 'Delia Effect' a few years ago, when shops completely ran out of things that she used in recipes?

There are going to be a lot of puzzled supermarket managers scratching their heads tomorrow, when their shelves are unexpectedly and completely cleared of Findus Crispy Pancakes, swiss roll, Angel Delight, Spam, prawn cocktail sauce, vol-au-vent cases, evaporated milk and cocktail sticks Grin Grin

MrsJayy · 11/07/2018 20:44

Hedge Grin

excuse me Mr Shopkeep can you direct me to your birds trifle
