Just had a craving for Coronation chicken, made it for my DTeens ....Everyone has gone mad for it.
Made me think.....in these times of quinoa, butternut squash and halloumi (which I love) what retro food do you still serve?

Me?
I love a retro curry with raisins.
Can’t beat chicken Kiev.
And at a party I once served a tin foil wrapped grapefruit with cheddar and pineapple on cocktail sticks (like my mother used to serve) ironic obv, but it went down a storm.

Also golden syrup sponge

Daftenough22 · 11/07/2018 20:45

Ohhhh sandwich spread too

MrsJayy · 11/07/2018 20:48

I tried to do my own kiev but the butter leaked out

EggysMom · 11/07/2018 20:53

I'm reading this thread thinking "but that's not retro, that's not retro, and that, that's not retro ....." I still regularly consume:

pickled onion monster munch
butterscotch angel delight
birds trifle
chicken kiev
faggots
viennetta

Shadow01 · 11/07/2018 21:06

Brains faggots roast potatoes and peas are a regular favourite in this house Smile

luckycat007 · 12/07/2018 00:17

The syrup sponge in the tin you boil!! Heinz do a jam one and it was my treat back in the day! Happily you can still buy it.

BetterEatCheese · 12/07/2018 00:21

I absolutely love vol au vonts! Mushroom preferably. And crispy pancakes

Freetodowhatiwant · 12/07/2018 00:22

Like others have said all the food I used to have at my nan’s. Tinned peaches and evaporated milk, sandwich spread sandwiches on soft white bread, and something I haven’t had for years - condensed milk sandwiches!

MrsSlocombesPussy · 12/07/2018 07:20

Trifle always had to be made with Birds custard powder, and you had to make it thicker than normal.
My mum used to make her own variation on a trifle. Bottom layer was sponge soaked in strong coffee and rum. Then sliced bananas, chocolate blancmange, cream and crumbled chocolate flake. I can't remember if there was custard too.
My aunt also used to make a Black Forest trifle. Chocolate sponge soaked in kirsch, cherry pie filling, chocolate blancmange / pudding then cream.
I am now craving trifle!

eggncress · 12/07/2018 10:18

Probably stems from childhood but I actually like lumpy custard ( made from Birds powder) Grin

Magicstar1 · 12/07/2018 10:30

I'm laughing at all the egg and chips love...when I go to my parents' house after work, my mother always makes me proper chips and fried eggs. DH does it the odd time too as a treat.

We regularly have prawn cocktail / black forest / rum raising ice cream etc.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/07/2018 11:38

I love the sound of your mum's trifle, @MrsSlocombesPussy - it sounds delicious.

givemushypeasachance · 12/07/2018 12:13

Ah childhood memories on this thread - potato waffles, angel delight! Ice magic! Supernoodles, microchips... Magic convenience food. Even more retro what about boil in the bag cod in parsley sauce?

A common mid-week meal for us would be lamb dalesteaks and savoury pasta of some kind from one of those packets you can make up quickly.

I've tried Findus Crispy Pancakes as an adult and agree it's not as nice as it used to be, they've definitely tried to cut out some salt/fat or something and it's not the same.

Supermousse were lovely, a staple pudding of childhood. I think Asda & Tesco still do own brand frozen raspberry ripple mousses.

My mum used to make this "flan" thing for BBQs and the like that involved a bought sponge flan case, fruit - sometimes tinned peaches, sometimes strawberries - covered in quick jel and then served with evaporated milk. Delicious.

We'd also sometimes have a party or BBQ pudding called "jelly mousse" that involved making up a jelly stirred in with fruit, then layering it in a bowl with another jelly made up with milk, topped with chocolate buttons. Amazing and still requested at family gatherings today!

KiplingAngelCake · 12/07/2018 14:26

Arctic Rolls
Birds Trifle
Butterscotch Angel Delight
Supermousse
Chocolate Lovely (does ANYONE else remember these? people look at me like I'm nuts when I mention them! )
Findus Crispy Pancakes (cheese and mince beef were my favourites)
Smash Instant mash

Hungry and nostalgic now!

DaftCat · 12/07/2018 14:47

Lamb Dalesteaks! I loved those! There was a bbq rib one as well They were good too.
I remember chocolate Lovely’s. Wonderful things.

buddhasbelly · 12/07/2018 14:50

I used to have a flatmate that lived off potato waffles. He would do them in the toaster. I always wondered how he didn't have scurvy Grin

Some retro foods I'm afraid to buy as I know they won't be quite the same.

A mini chicken Kiev makes me feel like a giant Grin

PicklingGherkins · 12/07/2018 18:07

Batchelors bbq beef supernoodles or tinned meatballs are pure full of crap but I crave them post migraine and they never disappoint (such is my renowned love that I actually fear this may out me 😀)

MrsJayy · 12/07/2018 20:03

I wonder why you crave them after a maigrane @PicklingGherkins as long as you feel better that is the main thing

MsRinky · 13/07/2018 11:08

I'm just back from Porto and all the little local bars that sell wine for a euro also sold little stuffed breaded things filled with creamy seafood, creamy chicken or mince that were like the memories of Findus crispy pancakes of my youth but better. I did buy some about a year ago and they were a terrible disappointment.

Being a terrible food snob, the last time I had people round for dinner I have them ice-cream and home-made ice magic from coconut oil and Valrhona. They all went nuts about it - I've since had people I don't even know asking me if I'm the ice-magic genius they've heard about from friends of friends... Just melt a tbsp of coconut oil with about 80g of chocolate, easy-peasy.

RamblinRosie · 15/07/2018 23:42

Oh yes to prawn cocktail steak Diane and Black Forest gateau, heaven!

Cheese fondue, the leftovers make heavenly cheese on toast.

Chicken livers, fried in flour or poached in sherry and cream.

Ham hock soup with cabbage and beans - had that tonight!

AdaColeman · 16/07/2018 00:07

YY to prawn cocktail, a favourite here.

As a treat I sometimes do one of my Mum's specials in the summer when there are some lovely large tomatoes available.

Slice a "hat" off the top of a tomato, carefully scoop out the core and seeds, fill the hollow with prawn cocktail mixture, pop the hat on top of the piled up prawns. Delicious!

Other retro favourites are
Baked Alaska
Coq au vin
Kidneys Turbigo
Kedgeree
Gentleman's relish on toast.

AdaColeman · 16/07/2018 00:30

Starters of half a grilled grapefruit with a maraschino cherry, or a honeydew melon 'boat' with powdered ginger!

Wincarnis · 16/07/2018 07:27

Blackpool Milk Roll
Heinz London Grill
Toast Toppers
Jelly and Custard
Blancmange made in a rabbit mould

bruffin · 16/07/2018 07:32

Halloumi is my retro food. Im half greek cypriot and we had vats of home made halloumi sent over from Cyprus. My dad used to get in the shops in Wood Green , holloway etc
I used to love a tin of macaroni cheese on toast and Vesta meals

Deathraystare · 26/07/2018 19:32

Yes to these but not supermousse - perhaps because they were small! I still love mushroom vol au vents and loved Angel delight. I get the Sainsbury's one now and eat it all myself! I do remember the milk jelly thing too. We thought mum was so clever!!!
