Just had a craving for Coronation chicken, made it for my DTeens ....Everyone has gone mad for it.
Made me think.....in these times of quinoa, butternut squash and halloumi (which I love) what retro food do you still serve?

Me?
I love a retro curry with raisins.
Can’t beat chicken Kiev.
And at a party I once served a tin foil wrapped grapefruit with cheddar and pineapple on cocktail sticks (like my mother used to serve) ironic obv, but it went down a storm.

Kia Ora: so strong you could blow bubbles with your own saliva on a hot day. Not seen it for years.

Still love tinned fruit with evaporated milk: fed it it the Brownies on holiday this year (none of them had ever tried evaporated milk before!) and they all absolutely loved it.

Braised stuffed lambs hearts. DH couldn't eat it whole but happily eats it sliced. DC and I have no problems eating it either way!

Atalune · 10/07/2018 22:46

Steak dianne! My fave!

Moore6701 · 10/07/2018 22:50

My granny used to make milk jelly with condensed milk.

NotMyFinestMoment · 10/07/2018 22:55

Fish finger sandwiches (even M&S are selling them now).
Crisp sandwiches (someone gave me one as a child and I still secretly love them to this day and occasionally crave them - ready salted crisps, fresh white bread, nice butter - this is one i would never admit to in real life).
Black forest gateau
Soda Stream drinks (currently considering buying one)
Old school puds: steamed syrup sponge pudding, jam roly poly, spotted dick, caramel tart - all with lashings of custard :-)
I did like the Bernard Matthew Golden Drummers but boycott the brand completely now because of the animal cruelty
Chicken kievs

elephantoverthehill · 10/07/2018 22:56

Gingernut pudding. Gingernut biscuits sandwiched with double whipped cream into a log shape and covered with whipped cream. Refrigerated for a couple of days and then very delicious.

We eat lots of this stuff Blush I bought mini Kiev’s recently for DS to try and he doesn’t like them so me and DP are eating them, strange child. DP loves tinned meatballs and if he’s working a late shift and eating alone will have them quite often.

We’re going through a retro crisp phase and loving Nice’n’Spicy niknaks, scamp fries and pickled onion monster munch. We love old fashioned 70’s trifle made with jelly and stuff like pineapple upside down cake. DS also thinks Arctic Roll is a treat bless him.
I’d give my right alarm for some Birds Hot Crunch pudding I absolutely loved it!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 10/07/2018 23:04

We do eat decent food too of course, we end up with this stuff if I pop into Iceland or B&M Grin

LesAnya · 10/07/2018 23:05

Ah all the foods mentioned on this thread...
I miss the pyramid shaped orange ice pop things you used to be able to get. They did a cola flavour too.

Not technically edible, but I miss the toys you’d get in cereals, happy meals and kinder eggs.

zsazsajuju · 10/07/2018 23:06

Findus crispy pancakes. Yum

WhoKnowsWhereTheW1neGoes · 10/07/2018 23:15

Some good and bad memories here!

I used to love crisp sandwiches and still regularly put crisps into sandwiches if I getvtgem as a meal deal from the supermarket. Also when we had mince and gravy as a child we used to crumble crisps over it.

DS came back from a school residential asking for Arctic roll, we buy it quite often now. Also we had soft scoop Neapolitan ice cream recently which went down well.

I hated Birds trifle though and my mum used to make the gingernut log with whipped cream, that was one of the worst puddings I've ever tasted.

PolkerrisBeach · 10/07/2018 23:17

My pregnancy craving was butterscotch Angel Delight with banana.

YUM

BonnieF · 10/07/2018 23:33

Proper Schwarzwälder kirschtorte.

The combination of kirsch-soaked rich chocolate sponge, sour cherries in kirsch, whipped cream and dark chocolate is an absolute classic.

It’s such a shame that cheap nasty ‘Black Forest gateaux’ ruined the reputation of a great cake in the 80s.

The real thing is long overdue a comeback.

cricketmum84 · 11/07/2018 06:29

There used to be a Vesta chow mein in a box that my mum used to do for a quick tea. You added water to it and then deep fried crispy noodles to go on top.

Findus crispy pancakes too Smile I bought some a few years ago but they just aren't the same!

Shampooeeee · 11/07/2018 06:43

Prawn cocktail
Devilled eggs
Egg and chips
Cheese and pineapple on sticks
Cheese and sweet corn “salad”
Skips/ Nik Naks/ Hula hoops (all better in my memory than in real life).
Jamaican ginger cake
Cocktail cherries
DS loves redcurrants so I now buy them for munching but I can’t help thinking they belong as a garnish on a naff dessert, with copious amounts of icing sugar.

It also makes me ridiculously happy to see salad/ veg carved into intricate shapes, even though it’s pointless.

I would LOVE to try ice magic again!

sluj · 11/07/2018 07:41

When my DS were small and they had friends for tea, I used to get requests from their friends for the special sundaes.
It was actually jelly with strawberry Angel delight on the top. Served in a fancy sundae glass though. The kids loved it

MsSquiz · 11/07/2018 07:49

DH regularly has coronation chicken sandwiches and we often have chicken Kiev and chips for tea!

I currently have a vienetta and arctic roll in the freezer too!

I love any food that reminds me of my childhood:
Fish fingers and cheesy mash
Mini kievs (just a bowl full, nothing else)

I wish I could get hold of crispy pancakes (chicken and sweet corn) they remind me of Saturday afternoon lunch at my nana's with white bread and proper butter Grin
I also loved the brick blocks of ice cream my nana would get to make ice cream sandwiches after Sunday lunch - always either raspberry ripple or Neapolitan

Notquiteagandt · 11/07/2018 08:18

Tinned ham
Cornflake tart
Those frozen raspberry mouses
Smash
Rum and raison icecream
Vesta chow mein
Still morn the loss of turkey twizzlers (thank you jamie oliver!! Angry )

There was a lovely programme on bbc about retro food where a family tried each decades food. Sure be on iplayer. Back in time for tea.

primoestate · 11/07/2018 08:37

Vesta Paella.
Food of the Gods in the 70's.

DryWhiteagainW · 11/07/2018 09:22

This is so good....had no idea.
Coq au vin and beef bourg are classics though, love them.
You’ve all reminded me about evaporated milk...loved that.

Re chicken Kiev the posh M and S won’t do. They have a bone and no golden breadcrumbs, v disappointing. Have tried to make them legit. I mean the dubious “chicken breast” with loads of crispy breadcrumb type.

oooh tinned ham!!

My mother used to do Ham En croute!
Method: Un-tin your ham, roll out your puff pastry, wrap up ham in pastry as if it were a last minute christmas parcel, bake in oven. Serve with chips and beans.

Drywhite what did you say to the recipe requesting mother...did you say it was a little something you knocked up, or did you confess to serving Angel Delight to her precious?? :o

MsHomeSlice · 11/07/2018 09:57

And the evap milk and jelly was called Fruit Fluff, if it was a fancy pudding there'd be an appropriate tin of fruit to match the jelly whisked in as well! Faves were mandarins or rasps.

Tinned raspberries were dear though so we mostly had mandarins!

DryWhiteagainW · 11/07/2018 09:58

Oh I confessed......the kids loved it, then she started serving it at home too Grin

MsHomeSlice · 11/07/2018 10:02

I made chocolate and butterscotch Angel delight and layered it up in martini glasses with a flake on top, the children were very impressed :o

Moore6701 · 11/07/2018 11:03

I remember the family going out for high tea on a weekend. Does anywhere still do high tea?

Leeds2 · 11/07/2018 11:17

Fried spam sandwiches.
