Just had a craving for Coronation chicken, made it for my DTeens ....Everyone has gone mad for it.
Made me think.....in these times of quinoa, butternut squash and halloumi (which I love) what retro food do you still serve?

Me?
I love a retro curry with raisins.
Can’t beat chicken Kiev.
And at a party I once served a tin foil wrapped grapefruit with cheddar and pineapple on cocktail sticks (like my mother used to serve) ironic obv, but it went down a storm.

Findus pancakes. My Mother was big into homecook meals but for some reason she would let us have beef and onion findus pancakes for lunch. She also always fried them.

SacreBlue · 10/07/2018 20:28

@sluj my one regret about going vegetarian all those years ago is that I can no longer have a Vesta chow mein 😰 Food of the gods.

EnormousDormouse · 10/07/2018 20:31

Just got back from Cuba and they had pineapple upside down cake (and many other spongy variations thereof) but with green glace cherries - how it took me back!

Atalune · 10/07/2018 20:32

Old boyfriends mum who was ver posh served chicken vol au vents with a whole boiled onion with a white sauce and it was delicious.

GlitterGlassEye · 10/07/2018 20:32

I’m Scottish and most people I know have mince and totties on a regular basis. Brilliant with a couple of slices of toast Wink.

Harrykanesrightsock · 10/07/2018 20:32

DH always talked about Westlers tinned burgers with fondness so he bought some a few years back took one bite and binned them. Sometimes the memories are far better than the real thing.

DryWhiteagainW · 10/07/2018 20:33

I once served chic Angel Delight with fresh straws for a kids tea.....play date ‘s mother phoned me up next day to ask for “the delicious choc mousse recipe”!

I've had that crackin' stuff and it does the job but I miss the orange choc and mint choc ice magic

My dad used to make the best chip pan chips and fried eggs. He passed away. I'm tempted to buy a chip pan (can you even still buy those) and have a go at making them but I know they won't be the same.

I miss Gino Ginelli tutti frutti ice cream as well

annandale · 10/07/2018 20:36

Could eat prawn cocktail all day every day.

Black Forest Gateau, made from scratch.
Haggis neaps and tatties.
Chopped (chicken) liver.

AlbusPercival · 10/07/2018 20:37

Vienetta
The beef findus pancakes
Sunny delight
Birds trifle

NotUmbongoUnchained · 10/07/2018 20:37

Screwball ice creams with the bubble gum in the bottom.

Pretamum · 10/07/2018 20:38

Yes to Kievs! Still eat them now and my DS loves them too.
Mini milks were a big fave as a child too. Boil in the bag fish in butter sauce- i remember the butter sauce being heavenly, but I imagine it probably wouldn't be if I had it now!

MrsSlocombesPussy · 10/07/2018 20:40

Some of the food I used to have at my gran's. Homemade apple pie with Carnation evaporated milk.
Trifle, with sliced Swiss roll soaked in sherry, then some kind of tinned fruit, jelly, custard, whipped cream, with a crumbled chocolate flake on top.
Yes to the pineapple and cheese on sticks. We also used to mix things up a bit. Cheese and tiny silver skin pickled onions on sticks.
Also Ritz crackers with artfully piped Primula squeezy cheese on top.

elephantoverthehill · 10/07/2018 20:40

Riot Ooo egg and chips Smile but I know what you mean about trying to recreate it.

pallisers · 10/07/2018 20:43

Findus crispy pancakes
vesta chicken curry

My best friend's mum's "cheesecakes". they were homemade cakes with pastry on the bottom, jam, sponge and icing on top.

Bumble1830 · 10/07/2018 20:46

@Dboo. Might be sounding dumb here, but how do you make that? , do you literally do a layer of spuds, layer of corned beef, onions and repeat? Do you cook it in the oven? Do you cook spuds first? How have I never come across this before?

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 10/07/2018 20:47

Mr Brain's Faggots - so delicious Grin

Twotabbycats · 10/07/2018 20:48

Prawn cocktail
Coffee and walnut sponge
Butterscotch tart (school dinners in the 70s - no idea what was in it but it was so good!)

GlitterGlassEye · 10/07/2018 20:49

My mum, when having a party in the 80’s, would shred up pineapple and mix it with grated carrot. She couldn’t (and still can’t) cook so this is what she brought to every buffet table alongside pickles with cheese on sticks. It was lovely tbf.

Thismummyruns · 10/07/2018 20:51

Please don't judge me but Turkey Drummers and in a sandwich... I'm just going to leave now and hang my head in shame 🤣

motortroll · 10/07/2018 20:53

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden that's what I was going back say! Yummy!
