Just had a craving for Coronation chicken, made it for my DTeens ....Everyone has gone mad for it.
Made me think.....in these times of quinoa, butternut squash and halloumi (which I love) what retro food do you still serve?

Me?
I love a retro curry with raisins.
Can’t beat chicken Kiev.
And at a party I once served a tin foil wrapped grapefruit with cheddar and pineapple on cocktail sticks (like my mother used to serve) ironic obv, but it went down a storm.

Arctic Rolll, jam and coconut topped sponge and custard ( as per school dinners)

Takfujimoto · 11/07/2018 11:38

I miss mighty white bread marmite sandwiches, the sponge pudding with thin but sweet pink custard you got for school dinners, any school dinner pudding really.
Gypsy tart squares, chocolate sponge with popping hot chocolate custard.

Milk puddings, macaroni, semolina, baked rice pudding, they're not in vogue anymore but I make one or two every week in the winter, can't beat them.

Penny mix sweets, there was penny sweet that looked like a mini pint of beer 🍺 and tasted like shandy! Haven't seen them since I was little.

Panda pops, the blue and red ones, real cherry aid that make your mouth red for 48 hrs 😂

Dream Topping!

Deux · 11/07/2018 14:34

My friend’s Mum used to make an amazing cheese cake using dream topping and I might give it a go myself.

Make up a packet of dream topping. Beat room temperature pack Philadelphia (it wasn’t in a tub then). Add dream topping to Philadelphia and mix. Do the digestive/butter base. Put in the fridge to set then top. She used to top it with a tin of drained crushed pineapple. 😍

Frey Bentos pies. I had one a year ago or so and it was ok really.

crochetmonkey74 · 11/07/2018 14:47

Deux that sounds amazing!
I am going to try it with jamaican ginger cake- inspired by a PP

Deux · 11/07/2018 15:23

Just did a quick google for dream topping cheesecake and this one came up on gransnet. I can’t remember how liquidy the dream topping was when my friend's mum made it. www.gransnet.com/recipes/dish/6593-Dream-topping-cheese-cake

Crusha chocolate milkshake.

Sprats, dipped in flour and shallow fried, with bread and butter and ketchup.

My dad used to make a curry that he calle Malay Fruit and Meat curry - it hand onion, apple, ketchup and marmalade in it (plus stock, medium madras curry powder, and either minced beef or chicken) - it was entirely unlike any other curry I have ever tasted, but I love it.

Milky Ways.

Heinz tinned salad - I think it was called Russian salad and was cubes of cooked potato, and carrot with little lengths of fine green beans, all in mayonnaise. Just the concept is mind boggling.

nicslackey · 11/07/2018 15:43

I still love duck a l'orange and chicken maryland. Does anyone still make rock cakes or have the giant fairy cakes (aka muffins) totally taken over?! Can you still get that Cremola foam drink in the tins?
We always liked the raspberry or lemon flavour.

PenguinDuck · 11/07/2018 15:45

Truffle made with Swiss roll, a tin of tropical fruit in juice, birds custard, cream and sprinkles on top.

Chip butter made with cheap with bread, butter and chip shop chips.

Ice cream sandwich. Made from that rectangular block of ice cream which you cut a slice off.

Smash.

And I ate my way through dozens of Jelly cubes without bothering to make them up on this heat. It’s the only thing I can eat.

MargotMoon · 11/07/2018 16:36

Omg this thread is making me slaver for Findus crispy pancakes. Do they still make them?

MrsJayy · 11/07/2018 16:40

Yes you can still get crispy pancakes in supermarkets I bought them last year they don't taste the same though probably reduced salt and fat these days.

Pinkkahori · 11/07/2018 16:53

Anyone know what tinned meatballs are like these days? I have a feeling my kids would love them but I can't bring myself to actually buy them. I should look at the ingredients some day. Are they full of weird junk?

elephantoverthehill · 11/07/2018 17:05

Tinned meatballs reminds me of our family's first caravaning holiday 'sur le continent'. DM decided that meatballs were a good 'emergency food' in case of unforeseen disasters. We also were given a few marrows to take with us. My DPs gave us a marvelous experience and all I can really remember is eating meatballs and marrows for what seemed every meal.
