Sheese and other great vegan foods

Can't believe I've never tried this before! It's lovely and doesn't taste dairy free (it's the creamy garlic and herb). What vegan foods do you all love

CoYo yoghurts - especially the caramel flavour.

Swedish Glacé raspberry ice-cream. Really, honestly good. Comes in a distinctive black hexagonal tub.

Height of class that. Alpro soya chocolate milk is pretty lush too! And avocados. Always avocados.

Orgran No Egg egg replacer from Holland and Barratt. With that and vegan margarine, you can make just about any cake into a vegan one. Sainsbury's own chocolate drops are vegan.

Engavita Yeast Flakes with vitamin B12 get sprinkled on top of loads of things here, they add a really good flavour to soups, stews, bakes, etc.

I've been vegan for over a year and vegetarian before that for over 20 years (since a child) and I've never tasted avocado . I've just placed it with other foods I've never tried that I'm convinced I won't like - baked beans, mushy peas and cucumber

I do always use nutritional yeast flakes or I blend them with ground almond and basil to make a vegan Parmesan.

I'm similar-veggie for 20 years and now vegan for almost two. I used to not like houmous and tofu but now I do (so long as the tofu is totally pressed, torn up, covered in seasoning and baked in the oven until crispy!). Have you had the Alpro Go On yoghurts. They're really creamy. Oatly Creme Fraiche is great as a pasta sauce. Sacla do a free from pesto. I do cook a lot fro fresh but I'm just sharing the treats. Honest

Love houmous (sp?) but find tofu too soft, I will have to try it your way . I love the alpro big pots and eat a pot every day . The new alpro desert pots are amazing especially the chocolate hazelnut.

New favourite, love it with roasted cherry tomatoes and spinach in pasta.

Veggie Deli "duck" pieces and Oatly Creamy Oat Fraiche. Delicious.

DD has been doing Veganuary and we have been eating mostly vegan meals this month, so have tried loads of alternative foods.

I haven't tried any cheese alternatives that are remotely nice let alone delicious. The Violife (Vile-Life IMO) "cheese" slices are the least offensive and taste a little like the processed cheese slices you put on a burger, but I am a massive cheese fan, and quite frankly if it ain't cheese it ain't worth eating.

I think eating foods that aren't trying to be something else is the best way forward, except for the two aforementioned.

I am omnivorous BTW, but eat mostly vegetarian/vegan food.

OP you should try mashed avocado on multi grain toast with plenty of seasoning and sliced tomatoes. DD often has this as a snack.

Incidentally DD is having Making Waves Fishless Fish Cakes for lunch today. Will report back. I agree with Scarlet baking tofu is the way to go. Alternatively, pressing it, rolling it in polenta and frying it until crispy is another option. I would avoid the Tofoo brand as it is deeply disappointing. We usually buy Cauldron as it is readily available in supermarkets.

Can I recommend Jamie Oliver's vegan shepherd's pie. It is astonishingly delicious and you could get away with feeding it to a hardened carnivore.

Iamastonished I do get what you are saying about eating foods that aren't trying to be something else. But as a vegan firstly for ethical reasons rather than health I do want something which resembles cheese etc.

What do you guys use instead of milk in batter? Eg yorkshire puds, toad-in-the-hole.

I do love the fishless cakes and fingers plus a porkless pie . My local Holland and Barrett reduce all their chilled produce 2 days before the date is up to 25p each!

I've not made a batter because I haven't found a good enough egg substitute. But when making a white sauce I use soya milk with plenty of salt and pepper.

Aquafaba is amazing (chick pea juice) for all sorts of things as an egg replacer. I use coconut or almond milk for most cooking or yoghurt. My favourite not dairy cheese is the Greek style Sainsburys one.

I don't have a sainsburys where I live, but next time I'm in Swansea I will definitely grab some.

After trying all the milks DD prefers Oatly. Rice dream is nice on its own as a drink, but too thin for any other use.

DD really liked the fishless fish cakes BTW. Neither of us likes soya milk.

My milk of choice for a drink is cashew or almond original, I just prefer soya for cooking

Tesco's vegan "mature cheddar" is pretty good, and I'd never say no to a Quorn vegan fish finger. Regular Quorn gives me the raging trots, but their vegan stuff is fine.

Am I the only person who doesn't like the CoYo yoghurt? Horrible stuff. I also tend to avoid soya. I wish there was another vegan yoghurt option, like almond or rice yoghurt.

There is tectonic ! I try not to use soya products other than milk - I think the milks enough in a day so very rarely eat fake meat or cheese (don't much like them). KoKo dairy free and soya free yogurts are pretty good!
