I think Billy Crudup and Kate Hudson are fantastic casting in Almost Famous - as is the casting of the whole film.

Daniel Day Lewis in everything is brilliant. And Julianne Moore is great in everything.

I have never recovered from the wrongness of Cameron Diaz in Gangs Of New York or Anna Hathaway in Interstellar.

Bad casting:

Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd and Russell Crowe as Javert.

These are not slight roles musically!

Bulkypeepants · 01/12/2024 07:00

👍 Everyone in Everybody loves Raymond

👎 Lily Collins an Emily in Paris

Best casting for me is probably Gary Oldman, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in pretty much everything - actors who just become the role, whatever it is.

Gary Oldman was ridiculous in Dracula; he sounded exactly like the Count in Sesame Street.
No-one noticed because Keanu Reeves was even worse

Bewareofthisonetoo · 01/12/2024 07:07

Awful - Everyone in Love Actually apart from BillyBob Thornton.
In fact of the ghastly Cambridge clique (Emma Thompson/Stephrn Fry etc in anything -particularly the cringey self indulgent ‘Peter’s Friends’ if anyone saw that.
Best: Gary Sinise and John Malkovich in ‘Of Mice and Men’ and yes to Jack Sparrow and the Frasier men (although Daphne in that was a dud)

wildfellhall · 01/12/2024 07:14

Gregory Peck ✅ Atticus Finch
Russell Crowe ⛔️ in Les Mis - tragic
Ralph Fiennes ✅ Voldemort
Brendan Gleason ✅ GOAT in everything particularly Calvary and In Bruges

90s Pride & Prejudice ✅ cast is wonderful but Alison Steadman still irritates me - it is a comedic character but she needs a bit more light and shade.

Disclaimer cast is all a bit skewed - Cuaron not catching 🇬🇧 vibe

But for the 2005 P&P
Tom Hollander ✅ Mr Collins
Claudie Blakey ✅💕 Charlotte Lucas
Donald Sutherland ⛔️ wobbling accent as Mr Bennet
Brenda Blethyn ✅ Mrs Bennet

Cilian Murphy was miscast as the butcher's boy in Girl with a pearl earring. He was just so good-looking (and clever and gallant, but that's not a casting problem) that it was quite hard to believe that Griet preferred to stay on as a sexually harassed scullerymaid, with the master making her creep around doing extra work for him, than to marry Pieter/Cilian.

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 01/12/2024 07:18

Best: Rosamund Pike in I Care A Lot. Beautifully evil. Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn.

Worst: Emma Thompson as Elinor in Sense and Sensibility. Too old for the part, sorry. Nicolas Cage in Next. He looked like a homeless person, not a love interest.

My mum thought he was also just too good looking to be credible as a 1980s coal man, married with a clatter of children to a very ordinary (and in fact not particularly appealing woman) in Small Things Like These. And that it somehow took you out of the film. I agree to a point but I appreciate any opportunity to look at him 😁. We were in college at the same time and I can't believe I didn't notice him around campus, he is so distinctive.

I was just about to write I thought she was unexpectedly brilliant.

The actress in 4 weddings and a funeral...'is it raining, I hadn't noticed'

THIS!!! Has to be the absolute worst casting decision in the history of British film - A McD was beyond awful and completely wrong for the role. She came across as just a massive arsehole - totally unlikeable yet all the characters kept dropping lines re how lovely she was, what a great girl ect. Almost desperately trying to convince us we were meant to be rooting for her when actually she was a massive turn-off. She and posh rude nob Hamish deserved each other let’s face it.

Adding insult to injury - Andie was third choice for the role of Carrie. Third.

Nc546888 · 01/12/2024 07:22

I like Anne Hathaway (devil wears Prada) but worst was putting her in One Day the original film. The accent 😱

Interlaken · 01/12/2024 07:26

Agree with so many of these.
Terrible castings are Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in Far & Away. Their accents!
The woman in Scent of A Woman- should have been Kathleen Turner.

Came on to say Anne Hathaway in One Day. That. Accent.

CandidHedgehog · 01/12/2024 07:27

Worst : Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet in the Pride and Prejudice film. Admittedly, it was an odd film all round - the deliberate decision to not show a ‘clean Regency world’ when a big part of the novel was what was going on under the surface of proper behaviour and the said clean Regency world was strange in my view.

I also think she suffers by being compared to Jennifer Ehle.

As we are in the Christmas movie season then Worst Jack Black in The Holiday and Martine McCutcheon in Love Actually.

Oh I love Jack Black in The Holiday. Can easily see how Iris fell for him!

Who were the first two?!

StepAwayFromGoogling · 01/12/2024 07:31

Best: Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich. In fact, Julia Roberts in almost anything. Wish she wasn't getting so much stick for ageing gracefully rather than pumping a load of botox into her skin. She's still gorgeous.

mumisfull · 01/12/2024 07:31

I really enjoyed Greta Gerwig's Little Women but the series a few years before was even better. Maya Hawke was the best Jo since June Allyson.

Fraaahnces · 01/12/2024 07:35

Keanu Reeves as the evil genius Don John who wreaks all the machinations in Much Ado About Nothing is possibly the worst casting ever… Never expected to be disappointed when Shakespeare was not misquoted thus: “This may prove food to my displeasure. That young start-up hath all the glory of my overthrow. If I can cross him any way, I bless myself every way, Dude…”
I feel similarly about Keira Knaightlehr and her lerhps.
Best cast
Best - Alan Rickman in everything. I watch Love Actually and then Die Hard just to see him get killed every Christmas. (Schadenfreude?) And then I watch Truly, Madly, Deeply and fall in love with him and grieve his loss.

mids2019 · 01/12/2024 07:36

Bit vague but I think there is a lot of moscasting of older actors in some Netflix stuff. It's as if they have paid the big bucks just to that the name and the actors are dialling it in. Julia Roberts, Robert de Niro doing to mind.

MotherofBassets · 01/12/2024 07:40

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher absolutely infuriates me so I'm glad others agree. In my dreams I picture Liev Schreiber.

Moreshroomsplease · 01/12/2024 07:41

StepAwayFromGoogling · 01/12/2024 07:28

Who were the first two?!

Jeanne Tripplehorn (she’s been in a few things, only one I’ve seen is the female lead in Mickey Blue Eyes with Hugh Grant). And Marisa Tomei.

Footballorrugby · 01/12/2024 07:49

Worst - Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in La La Land. Just not right!

Also not sure about Renee Zellweger as Bridget Jones and Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio in Titanic. Odd couple.

I know everyone loves Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect but I didn’t!

Buffypaws · 01/12/2024 07:50

In bbc P&P shout out to scene-stealing Mr Hurst who was so hilarious passed out drunk in the background or mumbling “damn tedious waste of an evening”

the worst - keeping to the more minor characters - was Ed Sheeran as a Lannister soldier in game of thrones. Day ruined.

mids2019 · 01/12/2024 07:53

Why did they cast an American in Bridget Jones? There must have been some good English actors in that era?

Icedpumpkinspicelatte · 01/12/2024 07:56

Worst casting - Jodie Turner-Smith as Anne Boleyn. AB was a real person so an actress who resembled AB's portraits should've got the job.
